Barbara, now sadly no longer with us, was one of the finest women salmon fishers of her generation. She fished in Scotland from when she was a teenager until she was nearly 90, but her ambition was always to travel to Alaska and fish for the mighty Chinook or King salmon. Although she was an avid fly fisher, more than anything else she wanted ALASKAN MELEE

Barbara flew to Anchorage, the hub of Alaskan salmon fishing safaris, an

She nodded. ‘I suppose so. Look, I hope you’re not offended, but I don’t really fancy cooking that. I mean, the recipe sounded lovely, but it didn’t mention those teeth or the eyes staring back at me. Do you mind if I don’t take it?’
‘Er… I could cut the head off and even fillet it, if you thought that would help?’
‘I don’t think it would. I’ve already seen those eyes and that mouth, and I’d be thinking of them when I was eating. I’m really grateful to you for trying, but I think I’ll leave it this time.’

Greg began to walk the fish round. It occasionally tried to run out into the lake again, but it was tired now and couldn’t make much headway against the heavy glass sea rod. Richard went round to the other side of the bush and pushed himself as far into it as he could, then reached over and took the rod as Greg sprinted round to join him. At least Richard was able to feel the huge fish on the end for a few moments, although his heart came into his mouth at one point as it violently shook its head in a last-gasp effort to throw the hooks, and he thought he was go

‘Sorry, I don’t go there,’ David declared.
‘Why ever not?’ she asked. ‘It would be terrific to land and have a look round while we’re here. Apparently it’s lovely.’

‘Oh dear,’ she said, her face twisted in a horrible grimace, ‘it doesn’t look very nice, does it? It looks sort of… mean and nasty.’
‘Well, I suppose it is, especially if you’re a roach or bream or something. I think it’s evolved more to be an efficient hunter than to look nice to us humans.’

Some time later he opened his eyes and looked around him. His heart leapt. Through the darkness and the murk he could see a flickering light, and he convinced himself it must be from a nearby house. He pulled himself to his feet and staggered towards the light. There, sure enough, was a small cottage with a lantern in the window. Charles collapsed against the door and rapped its iron knocker as loudly as he could.
The door opened and he fell across the threshold.
‘Oh, you poor dear!’ said an old woman. ‘You look as though you’re perished. Come in by the fi

WhenSteveEdgedecidedtofollowthepioneers of Indian fishing and catch a golden mahseer, he began a chain of extraordinary events that led to a stunning conclusion.
n the days before one-stop-shop tour companies organised specialist Indian fishing holidays for visitors from all over the world, planning such a trip was an adventure in itself, and a slightly daunting prospect for an East End of London advertising man. However, it helped that Steve’s wife was half Indian, and that she had relatives still living on the subcontinent. Telephone calls went to and fro o

Robin made his way gingerly down the cliff path and arrived just above the big rock at the top of the run. There was another, smaller boulder about 20 yards below and he was quite right: at this height of water, you could see there was a small pot that might conceivably hold a fish, if there were any fish to hold.
Robin threw a couple of speculative short casts, presumably in case anything was holding just in front of him. From their vantage point, Mike and John could have told him there was nothing there. They could see every pebble on the bottom, and fish t

The jack surfaced about 80 yards in front of him, out in deeper water.
‘He looks ready, Mike,’ said Carlos. ‘You can bring him in now.’
Mike started to pump the jack in just under the surface, being quite firm with it so that it was deterred from any more runs out to sea. However, it was still 60 yards away when the whole surface of the water erupted, as though someone had set off a depth charge, and an enormous grey body shot out and engulfed the jack. The spinning rod was yanked down straight and very nearly torn from Mike’s hands and, for about five sec

John raised his eyebrows at Veronica. ‘Oh alright, David, if you say so.’ The fishing didn’t look as though it would pick up before dusk anyway, so they weren’t missing much. However, he was fascinated to know more about this obsession David seemed to have with Isle Maree.

He was right, and I did. It kept pulling line off the reel even then, until the pressure became too much and everything went slack. I reeled in and was surprised that I still had my tackle intact; except that the hook had pulled out straight. I hadn’t even seen the fish, but I was pretty certain it had been the biggest thing I had ever hooked, either at sea or in fresh water. Even though I hadn’t expected to land it, losing it was gut wrenching.
‘Bad luck,’ said the guide.
I shrugged and forced out a laugh. ‘No problem, I’ll bring the biggame gear next tim

Ray went down aft, waited for the right moment and threw the gaff over the shark, then pulled hard on the rope so that the steel stuck fast into the tail wrist. He was just searching for a strong point to tie the rope off when all hell let lose down in the water. The shark’s tail crashed against Freebooter, so hard that Rick thought it would smash one of the CORNISH MAN-EATER
oak planks along the hull. The flying gaff lived up to its name and flew straight back at Ray, hitting him hard on the shoulder before bouncing dangerously around on the deck.

On this particular summer’s afternoon, John made it to the bottom and clambered over a boulder at the tail of a deep pool with the intention of fishing the neck of the next run, which doglegged into a narrow gully of fast water. As he prepared to cast, he suddenly realised that there was a salmon lying on a slab of rock in front of him. It was still alive and flapping, but had obviously misjudged its attempt to run the falls and was now stranded.
John was faced with the choice of either knocking the fish on the head, as many would have done at that time, or r

A British Airways Atlantic flight later, they were ensconced in a fabulous Key-side bungalow with the rest of Peter’s party, all Americans. There was beer and food in the fridge, and information about the fishing they would be doing in the morning. Only one thing was getting in the way of this being an idyllic 50th-birthday trip for Colin: the fishing was scheduled to be from a boat. And not a very big boat at that.
In the morning, the party members were having breakfast – except, of course, for Colin. He was eyeing up the dory on the mooring at the end of th

‘Blimey!’ shouted Richard. ‘How are we going to land that?’
Greg had borrowed his father’s net, but there was no way this pike was fitting inside it.
‘Dunno. Look round for somewhere we can pull it out.’
AMAZING FISHING STORIES
There was an inlet to the shore where a boat had been pulled up onto the grass. The bank had been worn down there and was shallower than anywhere else. There was a bush between them and it, but it was the only place they had a chance of beaching the fish.
Greg began to walk the fish round. It occasionally tried to run out i

KODIAK BEARS AND STEELHEAD
Steelhead, the migratory form of rainbow trout, is one of the great game species and a must-catch for any globe-travelling fly fisher. The fact that bears inhabit similar country to steelhead, and enjoy eating them, adds an interesting dimension to Alaskan fishing trips.
Peter Hayes and a friend, Nigel Sturgeon, had both been to Alaska’s Kodiak Island before. However, whereas Nigel had caught steelhead, Peter never had, despite catching large numbers of the various species of Pacific salmon. Interestingly, both had nearly killed

poking out from a rock, and it was a quick dash into the house to pick up his bamboo cane and return to tempt it from its lair with a worm or piece of meat. We tend to forget in today’s world of commercialism and modern fishing tackle that, back in the 1930s and 1940s, times were hard and Bill recalls a Mr Rowe, who owned a shop in Barnstaple High Street, selling bamboo canes with eyes crudely whipped on for sixpence.
Bill’s passion for the river inevitably rubbed off on John and, when he was old enough, they would fish together for salmon, sea trout and trou

until the penultimate day that Steve managed to land a magnificent golden fish of about 30 pounds. It was the crowning glory to a fantastic week and Steve was a man content with life as he went into his final day’s fishing. He had succeeded in mounting an expedition to this spiritual area virtually unknown to Western anglers, and he had the photographs of his precious golden mahseer to show for it. He was perfectly relaxed and didn’t really care whether he caught another fish or not.
At that time of year, the sun went down quickly and it was quite dark by 6 o

The first he knew that anything untoward was happening was when the temperature dropped dramatically, even though there was now plenty of cloud cover and the wind remained in the south, so should still have been a warming influence. Peter was an experienced sea trout fisherman and knew instinctively that nothing meteorological should be causing the sudden change in conditions. Whether through this realisation or some inner sense that something very strange was about to take place, he felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end and a shiver of adrenalin d

believe in God-given offerings from the heavens like this. It swam round the fly, which had now sunk realistically towards the bottom, and then began to upend on the unexpected prey morsel.
‘Hit it, man!’ screamed Jose.
Robin reacted much more quickly this time and struck immediately, at which point all hell let loose as the permit set off for its more comfortable environment in the open ocean, tearing line off the reel at a mindboggling rate. Robin couldn’t believe that he had actually hooked into a permit at long last and realised that he was laughing ou

The epilogue to this story is that the lake owner was delighted the pike had been removed, because she thought it had been responsible for eating all the ducklings in the spring. Greg’s father was so delighted with his son’s efforts that he paid to have the pike set up in a bow-fronted glass case, and it hangs in Greg’s home to this day.
The brass plaque reads: Pike 21 lbs 8 ozs caught August 1966 by Greg Wright aged 10 years.
A species of fish in India has an evil reputation but puts up a terrific fight. So could the locals ever learn to love this alleged

‘Er, yes, funny you should say that,’ muttered Steve, fingering his singed eyebrows. ‘Look, doc, I really appreciate you seeing me so quickly. I don’t think the rest of your customers were quite so happy about me jumping the queue, though.’
The consultant sat down and grinned across his desk. ‘Mr Edge, there was no way I was giving your case to one of my juniors. You see, I have been practising medicine in London for the best part of 40 years and I am retiring in a fortnight.’<

AMAZING FISHING STORIES
They were still there, though, gorging on the olives, so don’t let anyone tell you sea trout won’t feed in fresh water. These ones were doing so as though their very existence depended on it.
It was probably our fifth drift over the same ground when Geordie spoke about something other than olives and sea trout, and how he had never seen anything like this in more than 10 years as a ghillie.
‘Strange, that skerry’s high out of the water,’ he said.
Skerries are small outcrops of rock that poke above the surface of the loch, ofte
