Eventually, the salmon began swimming increasingly closer to the bank on each revolution, until Jock was confident that he could actually reach it. He picked his moment, dropped his rod on the bank and threw himself at the fish, managing to get both hands underneath it and then wrestle it from the water and onto the bank. It was a silver cock fish and, remarkably, had taken the fly, had obviously still been suspicious of it and had spat it out through its gills before Jock could strike. The fly had embedded itself in the salmon’s shoulder, and it would probably

Interestingly, Andrew discovered that eggs had been brought over from Germany’s River Rhine, well known for its huge salmon before pollution killed the stock, in the late 1880s and their progeny stocked into the Brora. Although few of these stockings were ever terribly successful, it may be that the Rhine genes are still present in a few fish to this day and so produce the occasional monster.
The list of great Brora salmon started in the 1920s, when Charles Akroyd, one of the great anglers of the era and inventor of the Akroyd strip-winged fly, landed a salmo

The one saving grace was that Ron was extremely amiable and it was difficult to be mad at him for long. He never let anyone suffer from his joking and would always make sure that sandwiches, tea, fish and chips and whatever else were swiftly replaced from his own wallet. Even when he slipped a bag of frozen squid into Terry’s bag at the end of a day’s fishing on the pier, knowing that Terry wouldn’t be out again for a few weeks and the squid would defrost and slowly putrefy, he made sure he had a new bag ready to hand over when the inevitable accusation flew his

Someone mumbled something about a fish that size on a cluttered boat like Freebooter being an extremely bad idea. Meanwhile, Rick was trying desperately to keep some control over the situation.
AMAZING FISHING STORIES
Ray came up beside him. ‘Let him run as much as he wants. The only chance you’ve got is to let him knacker himself out completely. You won’t beat him any other way with the gear you’re using.’
No one actually timed the fight, but the general feeling afterwards was that it went on for more than an hour and a half. The shark made countless l

‘Visit the Motor Museum and the abbey,’ suggested Chris.
They spent the morning inspecting cars, then went into the abbey and house in the afternoon. There was a guide in the house talking about the ghosts that were seen around the estate, even sometimes on the river. The Beaulieu was an important trading highway in the old days and the monks would use it to transport some of their agricultural produce, and to bring in wines and spices from the continent. They were still seen on the riverbank apparently, carrying barrels over their shoulder or sacks of corn,

The line stopped and Greg braced himself.
Richard put a hand on his arm. ‘Just a bit longer. Remember what that article said: he’s turning the fish round in his mouth so he can swallow it head first.’
Greg nodded again. His hand was shaking and his face grimaced with tension. ‘Now, you reckon?’
Greg leant back and put everything into the strike. The rod bent in a great arc and then line shot off the reel as the fish headed out towards the middle.
‘Ratchet!’ cried Richard.
Greg flipped the brass knob on the side of the reel to engage the ratchet, w

‘Bad luck,’ said the guide.
I shrugged and forced out a laugh. ‘No problem, I’ll bring the biggame gear next time.’
As evening draws on, the Zambezi takes on an almost primaeval atmosphere, and I had a rather depressing feeling in my stomach that the river wasn’t prepared to give up any more of its inhabitants to a visiting Englishman; certainly not its monsters. It actually felt quite frightening at that point: the size of the river, together with the knowledge of what lay concealed beneath the blackened water, whether mammal, reptile or fish. There was a

AMAZING FISHING STORIES
I didn’t see the float go under, because I wasn’t looking. I just have this vivid recollection of a truly violent pull on the rod, the like of which I had never felt before and seldom since. I didn’t see the fish, didn’t even hook it, which was just as well, because I think the rod would have immediately collapsed in sympathy. I was left with a feeling of profound shock, which rolls down the years to me still. I stood stunned, wondering what the hell this fishing lark was all about. My father, a clergyman, believed me when I stamme

So the day closed in the bar after dinner, with John tending the line burns on his legs and the two of them rueing the lost chance at the big one. Several rums disappeared, before Robin’s eyes lit up.
‘What time did you catch your tarpon?’
John shrugged. ‘About 11.30, I suppose.’
‘And what about yesterday, didn’t you catch a bonefish in the afternoon?’
John scratched his head, as though trying to think through the rum haze. ‘Yeah, I did. A couple, actually.’
‘And how many hours in a day?’

‘Did you hear the thunder in the night?’ asked their landlady.
‘Er… no,’ replied John, conscious of the fact that only a minor earthquake would have roused him from his slumbers once he had actually made it to bed. ‘Any rain to go with it?’
‘Yes, it was violent for a while. It’s beaten up my roses outside, but it probably wasn’t enough for you fishermen. You’re never satisfied, are you? You’re worse than farmers, you lot, with your weather requirements. It’s never quite what you want.’
John nodded. ‘True.’ His heart was beating slightly faster, though

Sea trout fishing at night is incredibly exciting, but it can be weird as well. Nocturnal noises can be put down to local wildlife and visions in the darkness logically explained away in the cold light of day. Or can they?
avid was a highly experienced fisherman with a particular love for sea trout. He travelled far for his fishing, at home as much on the lochs and loughs of western Scotland and Ireland as he was on the rivers of south west Wales and England. The identity of the river he was fishing on this particular night is not known, nor are the real name

Robin threw a couple of speculative short casts, presumably in case anything was holding just in front of him. From their vantage point, Mike and John could have told him there was nothing there. They could see every pebble on the bottom, and fish there weren’t.
Robin extended the casts, covering the more broken water just above the pot. It wasn’t possible to see whether there were fish there, but it was highly unlikely. Next time the fly went right into the pot, landing equidistant between the two stones. Robin put an immediate upstream mend in the line and
