In the lodge at lunchtime, Caroline was, of course, very grateful to have her line back, and to see the fish that had run off with it. The story of its recapture was also impressive. However, what she really wanted to know was who had tied the ruddy knot between the fly line and the backing that had failed and led to losing the salmon in the first place.

The river had dropped even more since they started and Ben could make out a depression at the edge of the pool that looked as though it had undercut the bank. He carefully eased himself into the river, then bent down and steadied himself with one hand on the bank while he felt underneath, as though back in his childhood tickling for trout. He slowly made his way along until his hand brushed against something unmistakably tail-like. He lunged a bit further forward, grabbed the tail wrist and hauled the salmon out into open water.
