Helen winced. ‘But the wind, Peter, and the rain? Surely no selfrespecting salmon’s going to take in these conditions.’
The grin widened. ‘You’ll wait your whole life for a day like this on the salmon. Trust me. The wind’s veering into the south and that alone means it’ll be worth a cast or two. Come on now, you’re both experienced enough to fish in this, otherwise I wouldn’t suggest it. It’s just a question of confidence.’
George shuffled his feet, not sure what to do. The whole idea seemed preposterous, and he was completely thrown by Peter’s enthusiasm.

‘Spinner,’ the skipper identified the shark from the wheelhouse door. ‘Nice fish. I reckon 150. Good catch.’
One of the crewman plucked up the courage to go forward and extract the hook from the shark’s mouth. He was obviously no fan of sharks and looked genuinely scared of this one, despite the number of times it had been smacked over the head. Martin couldn’t believe the sheer power and aggression of the fish. As he continued to fight it vertically, he kept glancing back at the harbour and city buildings, wondering whether there was anywhere back in the UK where he could be encountering a fish like this so close to a major metropolis. He finally boated a magnificent 13-pound kingfish, looking like an outside mackerel, the source of its power obvious in its deeply forked, predator’s tail.
