The fight went on much longer than five minutes. The rain kept pouring down and Hughie could see the river rising in front of his eyes. The flow was appreciably stronger now, and not only was the water perilously close to the top of his chest waders, he was finding it increasingly difficult to stay upright. Suddenly, the boat hit the bottom with an almighty thump, then seemed to bounce onto the next wave and crash down onto solid ground. It swivelled round in a complete circle and tipped over violently as the next wave hit it, throwing Charles out in the process and hitting him a glancing blow on the head as it landed, upside down, beside him. He lay on the ground, too far gone even to feel relief that he was finally off the water.

All hell let lose, with Steve clinging onto the rope, leaning back with all his might and his feet braced against the gunwale, as the shark went into a tail-beating frenzy that threatened to smash the little boat to pieces. The boatman cried out in alarm but, mercifully, kept his cool enough to hold onto the rod and control the shark’s writhing head. They were both soaked to the skin in seconds.
Steve soon realised that they were going nowhere with this strategy. While the shark was well and truly tailed, the lure was still embedded in its jaw and the chances
