Barbara flew to Anchorage, the hub of Alaskan salmon fishing safaris, and from there she took a sea plane further up the coast. The most recent encounter with a really big salmon was in October 2001. Captain Tim Ritson and party were fishing the lower river, three weeks after a 38-pound fish had been caught. Captain Ritson and retired Helmsdale ghillie Donald MacKay fished the Well pool and lost a salmon of around 25 pounds at the net. Soon afterwards another fish took gently and went into a sulk, first on their side of the river, then moving to the far side and refusing to move an inch.
