‘Definitely!’ said Frank. ‘Just a tap, tap on the tip.’
‘I’d better take a look then.’
Ron picked up the beachcaster, struck solidly at whatever was out there and began to reel in. ‘Yeah, you’re right!’ ‘Any size?’ asked Terry, trying not to laugh.
‘Dunno yet. Reasonable flattie, I’d say.’
‘Bet it’s not as big as my turbot,’ muttered Frank.
‘Maybe not, but I haven’t caught a decent plaice yet this year,’ stated Ron, getting visibly excited as the ‘fish’ came closer. ‘Hey, it really kicked, then. Maybe it’s bigger than I thought.’

The fish kept close in, as though it was happier in the surf than out deeper, but the extra pressure on the line from the pounding swell made the fight much more dramatic. Terry had never seen a beachcaster bounce around as much as Ron’s was doing right then, and he was certain the line would give at any moment, or the hook would be torn out of the fish. He couldn’t believe the drama that was unfurling in front of him. What size of fish had hit a perk designed to catch ruddy great cod and ling over a wreck, for goodness’ sake?
The fish changed its mind and he

‘Bloody hell,’ cried someone, ‘it’s a bleedin’ great conger!’
‘If that bugger comes on this pier,’ said another, ‘I’m jumpin’ off!’
And then I vividly remember the head start to shake and the eel began moving backwards. Its head stayed above the water, but it went horizontally back towards the piles at the other side of the landing stage. Its head moved rhythmically from side to side, presumably in time with its unseen body’s squirming, its eyes firmly fixed on the straight-faced one – until the inevitable happened.
