Just beyond the reef, they had great fun for half an hour catching small bonito. Knowing that James was an ardent conservationist who was against unnecessary killing, Peter was relieved to see all the fish going alive into a tank, although he wasn’t quite sure why. The boat then headed further out to sea and, with an increasing swell making the going bumpy, they soon spied a flock of skuas, terns and gulls diving into some turbulent water up ahead.
‘Baitfish!’ stated the skipper. ‘There are predators underneath pushing them up on the surface. Just what we wan

Just before they left, Peter wandered into the next room and was confronted by the alarming sight of an outlandishly huge shark’s head.
‘And what about that, for God’s sake. Did you catch that as well?’
‘Nah, not that one. It’s a great white, weighed nearly a tonne.’
‘I guess it was caught well out to sea?’
‘Nah, no way. It was tangled up in fishermen’s nets at the entrance to the lagoon.’
Peter stared at him and there was stunned silence for a few seconds.

‘Yes, alright, don’t rub it in,’ said Mike in a resigned tone. ‘You realise we’ve a job to do now, don’t you?’
Robin frowned. ‘What?’
‘This isn’t a recognised pool. We need to name it.’ ‘How about Robin’s Pot?’ Robin suggested modestly.
‘I’ve got a better idea,’ said John.
John took out his hip flask and poured a few drops of whisky into the water. ‘I name this place the CBA Pot.’ Robin’s frown deepened. ‘CBA?’ ‘Can’t Be Arsed,’ said John.
The name has stuck. And when the water is low on the Coquet, the threesome wouldn’t dream of fishing without

‘And furry,’ Geordie added. ‘That’s a flaming otter!’
And so we watched the otter fishing for a few more moments until it finally caught a brown trout, considerably bigger than anything we had ORKNEY OLIVES AND SEA TROUT
brought to the boat that week. The animal ate it quickly on the surface and dived back under. We didn’t see it again, as hard as we looked for it all around the boat. Unbelievable as it seemed in that expanse of water, the otter simply disappeared.
We caught plenty more fish during the morning and decided to go back to the Merkister for

‘Do you ever catch pike, Mark?’ she asked.
‘Funny you should say that: they’re today’s mission.’
‘Do you ever eat them?’
‘Not if I can help it.’
‘I was reading a recipe for pike in a magazine and I think I’d like to try it. It sounds different. Any chance of bringing one home with you?
‘Well, I don’t mind killing the smaller ones, but I always put big pike back alive. Leave it with me and I’ll see what I can do.’

Then the most remarkable thing happened. No more than 20 yards in front of us, the otter came up just like a seal, bobbing in the water and looking straight at us, as though it had never seen humans before and it was fascinated by what we were doing there.
‘It’s huge,’ I said. ‘No way is that the same animal we saw this morning.’
‘It’s a dog otter,’ Geordie agreed. ‘Definitely different from this morning.’
The otter kept watching us, although we never seemed to get any closer, despite the fact we were drifting. He must have been backpedalling to keep hi

But Peter’s abiding memory from the week, apart from the fantastic fishing, the scenery and the utter wildness of the country, was the lowoctave growl of the mother bear coaxing her cubs to follow her, and the louder, angry roar of a boar grizzly some way upstream, reacting to another camp’s Thunderflash dissuader. However marvellous it was to see brown bears in the flesh like that, so close and in their natural environment, the 12-hour Alaskan nights spent wondering whether Wiltshire fisherman might be on the predators’ menu played on the nerves somewhat by the

‘It moved,’ the straight-faced one said. ‘If it was the pier, it was bloody well travelling at the time.’
‘Too much beer the night before, if you ask me,’ said another, and the laughter went on around the rap rap rap on my rod tip that heralded yet another pouting on the end.
I was back several weeks later and the same group of bass anglers were there, fishing into the piles with live pouting for bait. All except the straight-faced one, who had brought along a big-game boat rod, to which he had attached a wire trace, a massive hook and a whole AMAZING FISH

It can be cold on the Helmsdale in early season but, unlike many Scottish rivers, there is still a healthy run of spring salmon to hunt. Ben was out early in the morning to try to catch a fish before breakfast during his first week on the river. Richard was lower down and out of earshot as Ben started to fish. He had a reasonable hope of a salmon, because the conditions were getting better all the time, with the river level noticeably dropping and the water clearing fast. He hadn’t seen any fish yet, but then you don’t always see early-season fish on the Helmsda

‘Don’t! The trip’s all paid for, so it’s up to them whether they want to take part or sleep. Look, we’ve got some bait now; d’you fancy a go at a proper sport fish?’
Mark was having huge fun where they were, but he knew the whole point of this trip, and the reason the Japanese had spent so much money on it, was to try to catch a black marlin.
He grinned. ‘It’d be rude not to, wouldn’t it?’
The swell increased as they went out further, the boat crashing uncomfortably through the lumpy seas. This prompted one of the Japanese to wake up rather quickly and

SPINNERS, ROD TOPS AND PIKE
Even a freak fishing accident didn’t divert one young angler from his determination to catch a pike to be proud of.

It helped that he had a private lake on his doorstep but, even so, he went through the minnow stage almost without noticing it. His f

Mark looked behind him, expecting to see a line of excited Japanese vying to be the first one to land a fish. However, all those on deck had their eyes closed and no one seemed in a hurry to leave the wheelhouse.
‘Bring it in yourself,’ Don called out.
Mark leant into the fish and tried to power it to the surface, but it wasn’t quite that easy. Each time he had it close to the top it bored away again, and it was a good six or seven minutes before he had it under control beside the boat.
Don flew out of the wheelhouse, leant over and hauled the fish inbo

Two down and only the easiest of the trio, a bonefish, to catch. Confidence was high enough for them to enjoy a leisurely lunch, then back to the flats for the afternoon. However, the bonefish weren’t coming to the table of this particular slam, not helped by the tide, which had dropped back, making the water on the flats very skinny and the fish almost impossible to approach close enough for a cast.
So the day closed in the bar after dinner, with John tending the line burns on his legs and the two of them rueing the lost chance at the big one. Several rums d

oak planks along the hull. The flying gaff lived up to its name and flew straight back at Ray, hitting him hard on the shoulder before bouncing dangerously around on the deck.
The shark took off and came right out of the water again in another tail-walk. There was a loud metallic noise from Rick’s reel, and then the line broke with a resounding crack. The shark disappeared.
The flying gaff, that menacing piece of forged steel, had been bent out almost dead straight, as though someone had merely unpicked a paper clip. Ray was clutching his shoulder and the

Bertie was creased up laughing by this time, watching the rod top careering round the lake and giving a perfect pointer to where the fish was at any time. The pike even jumped a couple of times, the angle sending the rod section sliding back towards the boat, only to reverse its direction once the fish dived deeper and the angle changed back again. And because his cousin couldn’t put any real pressure on the fish with only 4 feet of butt section to work with, the fight went on much longer than normal. Eventually, though, the pike exhausted itself and came meekly

‘Okay, so why was he haunting my fishing last night?’
‘Well, if my theory’s right, he was trying to scare you off the river, just like he was with the others when he appeared before. I think he was trying to make sure none of you met the same fate as he did.’
PART FOUR Amazing Days
ORKNEY OLIVES AND SEA TROUT
Fishing tales don’t necessarily need massive fish to make them stand out in the memory. They can stem from ordinary days that were spent seeking nothing more than the chance of a few fish and some solitude, espec

The head shaking and solid weight on the line didn’t feel like a sea trout. ‘That wasn’t my fish!’ Hughie called out. ‘Honestly, Simon, this feels a bit more serious!’
Simon came back as the line started to leave the reel at a steady speed against a tightened brake and a full bend in the 15-foot rod. Just then, at the bottom of the pool, where it runs into a glide, a tail appeared out of the water.
‘Bloody hell, Hughie!’
‘Told you! That’s the biggest tail I’ve seen in this river for years!’
He managed to stop the fish on that first run and recover so

‘I don’t believe that!’ cried George, and tapped Brett on the shoulder. ‘Did you see…?’
‘I saw it. I don’t believe it either, but I saw it. The bugger’s hooked up to Helen’s Para Dun but he’s still feeding on bloody beetles! Insane!’
George recovered his senses enough to pull in the anchor, and Brett navigated the boat around sunken tree trunks while Helen regained line. After several minutes manoeuvring, the line came free and Helen quickly regained contact with the fish, which, as though rejuvenated by the fresh intake of food, shot off on yet another

It was obvious that David wasn’t enthusiastic, but he set the boat to drift down along the island’s shoreline. There wasn’t enough wind to dap, so they fished teams of traditional flies and, soon after starting, Veronica hooked a big sea trout. The fight went on for a good 10 minutes but, just as the boat drifted level with the southern tip of the island, the fish jumped and threw the hook.
‘Damn! That would have been my best ever!’ Veronica stated vehemently.
‘Don’t worry, there’s plenty more fish here,’ said John. ‘Look, they’re rising all over the place

‘Okay,’ said Steve, ‘we know its dimensions, now what about its weight?’
Saban sighed, frowned and lent forward into the light of the camp fire. ‘We have been discussing this and I think we have come to a decision. When I first held the fish, I thought it was 120 pounds.’
‘But when I lifted it, I put it bigger,’ said Bola, ‘and the measurements prove this.’
‘How much bigger?’ asked a startled Steve. Despite the size of the fish, he hadn’t been thinking three figures.
Saban kept frowning and looked intense in concentration. ‘We have decided the fish w

His guide wasn’t exactly enthusiastic. Actually, Steve suspected that this was more to do with taking the boat beyond the reef, and out of the boatman’s comfort zone, than with what species they were hunting. But a couple of crumpled banknotes in his shirt top pocket sealed the deal and they duly motored out beyond the reef and began fishing around the rocks outside the bay.
Steve’s first trevally was an amazing experience. The popper lure streaked across the surface and, all of a sudden, a massive head and shoulders appeared from beneath the waves, shadowed

‘Clear as day, Major Jackson. Can I suggest the Munro killer this morning?’
‘I always fish a blue charm! There’s my box; I’ve every size we’ll need, on singles and trebles, so make sure you look after them. Now, where do I start on this pool?’
‘Just follow me, Major Jackson.’
Jackson followed Murdo up the bank. ‘And one more thing. I don’t want any fish with holes in their bodies; it affects the price terribly. So no gaffs: all fish must be carefully netted, do you understand?’
‘Quite understood, Major Jackson,’ said Murdo patiently. He met all kinds

‘Mr Cuthbertson, thank God we’ve found you! We thought you were at the bottom of the lough. Get in man, get in.’
Charles climbed into the passenger seat and they began the drive back to the hotel.
‘Where did you spend the night?’ O’Reilly asked.
‘Old Maire took me into her cottage and looked after me.’
The car screeched to a halt so abruptly that Charles nearly hit his head on the windscreen.
Charles told his story to an increasingly incredulous O’Reilly. When he had finished, the man said nothing, turned the car round and drove back the other way

As all the fish were returned alive, size was calculated using the standard formula for salmon and trout: nose-to-tail length multiplied by girth squared and divided by 700.
