Steve was on Alphonse in the Indian Ocean. He decided to ask his boatman whether they could venture out beyond the reef into slightly deeper water. He had been down to the fish market early the previous morning and seen some of the boxes being landed. There were species there that never came onto the flats where he had been stalking bone fish, and he felt an urge to try to catch some of them. In particular, the giant trevally looked a perfect target. He had heard people talk about how hard they fought and he fancied having a crack at them. He might not get anoth

Because he was looking round when the ice struck, Steve took much of the force of the impact on the right side of his body, especially in the ribs and a smash in the face. The ice knocked him off his feet and picked him up on its leading edge, so that he was carried down the river as though he were a stranded seal or polar bear. Try as he might, he couldn’t fight against the pressure forcing him downstream and anyway, even if he had been able to slide off the ice, its bulk would almost certainly have run him over and crushed him against the riverbed. From the eu

Terry ran down, grabbed hold of the bass through the gills and, ignoring the stabs of pain from the spines, dragged the fish clear of the water and up onto a higher level of beach.
‘Frigging…’ Ron’s voice tailed off.
‘Big, isn’t it?’ was all Frank could say.
‘Er, lads, what’s that bloody great thing sticking out of its mouth?’
‘It’s a long story…’
Terry’sworstfearswererealised.HeandFrankwereribbedmercilessly for the rest of Ron’s all too brief life after that. For the record, the fish went 123/4 pounds, by far the biggest bass any of them had

‘Salmon!’ shouted Geordie. ‘You don’t see many of those in here.’
Then it swirled again and we saw it more clearly this time. ‘Looks a bit coloured,’ I said.
‘Positively brown,’ agreed Peter.
‘And furry,’ Geordie added. ‘That’s a flaming otter!’
And so we watched the otter fishing for a few more moments until it finally caught a brown trout, considerably bigger than anything we had ORKNEY OLIVES AND SEA TROUT

poking out from a rock, and it was a quick dash into the house to pick up his bamboo cane and return to tempt it from its lair with a worm or piece of meat. We tend to forget in today’s world of commercialism and modern fishing tackle that, back in the 1930s and 1940s, times were hard and Bill recalls a Mr Rowe, who owned a shop in Barnstaple High Street, selling bamboo canes with eyes crudely whipped on for sixpence.
Bill’s passion for the river inevitably rubbed off on John and, when he was old enough, they would fish together for salmon, sea trout and trou

‘Bull shark can be man-eaters, and that mother was at least 8, maybe 10 feet long. If you’d been wading further out, it might have preferred you to the jack.’
‘Thanks, Carlos, that’s made me feel so much better!’

‘Are you not staying with me a little?’
‘I’m paid to go salmon fishing, Mister Schmidt, sir; that’s my job. So I will see you at lunchtime.’
With that, he pushed the boat off the beach, jumped in and headed for his first drift of the day, praying that he would catch a salmon.
The morning wore on and not a sniff of either salmon or sea trout on the toby. Just before lunch, he tried a drift down towards the island, casting his favourite Olive Bumble on the bob and a Connemara black on the tail, but all he managed was a swirl from a small brownie, and even

Tom grinned sheepishly. ‘Oh, I wouldn’t think I’ll have time. But since you mentioned it, I’ll take a small rod, just in case.’
‘Yes, I just bet you will!’
So a short spinning rod, fixed-spool reel, wire traces and large spoons with single hooks were included on the equipment list.
They met their guide, Thomas, at Chirundu. ‘What is a hippo?’ he asked rhetorically, as he started his ritual safety talk about the river and its wildlife. ‘A hippo is 3000 kilos or 6500 pounds of pure muscle, all controlled by a brain the size of a ping-pong ball! It sees a

Needless to say, the monstrous sea trout remained uncaught. Hopefully its offspring still run the Beaulieu River to this day.
There has to be a good reason why ghillies won’t land on a beautiful island, and why sea trout don’t seem to take a fly in its vicinity.
och Maree, on Scotland’s west coast, was arguably once the finest still-water sea trout fishery in Europe. Hopefully it will be again, if some of the environmental problems that caused its demise can be reversed. But back in its heyday, people would make the annual pilgrimage up to the loch from al

Alas, the hook didn’t hold for long and just pulled free, almost certainly, the ghillie told him later, because it was a tired fish that only took the big tube fly half-heartedly in the first place. That was often the way with running spring fish that had to battle their way through rough water between pools. They would take the fly if it crossed in front of their noses, but you had to be lucky to keep them on for long.
Slightly chastened by the experience, Ben walked downstream to find Richard sitting forlornly on a rock beside one of the lower pools.
‘I’

‘Mahseer!’ whispered Bola in a hushed, reverential tone, proving that he was every bit as awestruck by the sight as Steve himself was. ‘Now, that is a great, great fish!’
The mahseer seemed perfectly happy to be handled now, as first Bola and then Saban supported its enormous frame while they secured the recovery cord through its gills and took photographs from all angles. The fish remained calm through all this, as though it knew it was playing its part in something much more intense than merely an angling feat, and that it wouldn’t be harmed in any way.

Ever so slowly, Colin managed to regain line and keep it on the spool. The tarpon began to wallow on the surface now rather than jump, its tail thrashing water but not propelling it any more. Colin put more effort into pumping the rod, although whether he was pulling the fish to the boat or the boat to the fish, he wasn’t sure. Whichever, the tarpon finally lay alongside, which enabled Peter and Steve to grapple hold of the fish and haul it onto the flat deck in the bows of the dory. Even so, with its body right across the boat’s beam, its tail still reached int

The fight had lasted almost exactly an hour and the recovery period took another 30 minutes. Steve was cradling the fish, up to his chest in water, as the cord was removed. The mahseer rolled over, its eyes momentarily staring into Steve’s one last time, before it slowly sank away into the reflected moonlight and disappeared.
AMAZING FISHING STORIES

However, the opportunity to go fishing beyond the reef finally won the struggle, and Peter and James joined a boat heading out of Malindi with a skipper and three crewmen. The other guests were a married couple, although the side effects of malaria tablets kept the wife lying in the wheelhouse, quietly moaning, for the entire trip, so there were only three anglers to share whatever spoils the Indian Ocean had to offer.
Just beyond the reef, they had great fun for half an hour catching small bonito. Knowing that James was an ardent conservationist who was agai

‘Fish the pool down hard for about 50 yards,’ my host had told me. ‘There’s a bit right at the bottom that sometimes holds a fish, but it’s only worth a couple of casts.’
I fished the main pool and didn’t get a sniff. Again I went into the unproductive water, and immediately had a savage take on the Cascade, the fish racing off towards the foot bridge at Aberlour. Unfortunately, that was the last I saw of it, because we parted company just after the backing appeared through the top ring, so my hopes of a hat-trick in the day from unpromising lies were dashed.

Jackson followed Murdo up the bank. ‘And one more thing. I don’t want any fish with holes in their bodies; it affects the price terribly. So no gaffs: all fish must be carefully netted, do you understand?’
‘Quite understood, Major Jackson,’ said Murdo patiently. He met all kinds on the riverbank, but this one was beginning to take the biscuit. He could quite cheerfully lure him into a deep hole and let him drown; he had a fleeting image of the major’s head sinking into the peaty water, that pompous little moustache twitching wildly in panic as he disappeared.

‘Just shows, you doesn’t it?’ crowed Robin. ‘A bit of effort, and a willingness to experiment, and then…’
‘Yes, alright, don’t rub it in,’ said Mike in a resigned tone. ‘You realise we’ve a job to do now, don’t you?’
Robin frowned. ‘What?’
‘This isn’t a recognised pool. We need to name it.’ ‘How about Robin’s Pot?’ Robin suggested modestly.
‘I’ve got a better idea,’ said John.
John took out his hip flask and poured a few drops of whisky into the water. ‘I name this place the CBA Pot.’ Robin’s frown deepened. ‘CBA?’ ‘Can’t Be Arsed,’ said John.

One autumn in the early 1950s, Jock Wilson, brother of local tackle dealer Rob Wilson, fished the Bengie Pool in drought conditions. As usual in these situations he used a single-handed rod, in this case a 9-footer with floating line and an 8-pound cast. A big fish came to his fly but stopped short of taking, and followed this with six more suspicious looks at successive casts before it finally lost its inhibitions and was hooked. Jock reported that the fish was in control for the vast majority of what ensued, with him hanging on while the salmon swam in continu

The island channel proved to be a great place to catch small roach. Almost as soon as the float settled itself in the water, it started bobbing up and down and then slid under. The fish were not very big, just a few ounces, but it was great fun and went on for about an hour before they stopped biting.
‘I’m going to try spinning,’ said Greg. ‘I bought a mepps in the tackle shop the other day.’
‘Okay, let’s see then.’
Greg bit the hook off the line, slid the shot and float off and tied on the mepps. He carefully flipped back the reel’s bail arm and flung

The fish went ballistic. Barbara had never had a salmon behave so erratically and never, of course, with that amount of weighted muscle to propel it. For three or four minutes she was completely out of control and expected the salmon to free itself at any moment. Then, just as suddenly, the chaos stopped.
Barbara was puffing heavily by this time and her arms were aching fit to drop off. If ever the boatman was wanting to intervene, now was probably the time, she told herself.
‘I can’t move it!’ she cried. ‘It’s gone absolutely solid… no it hasn’t, it’s o

In the lodge at lunchtime, Caroline was, of course, very grateful to have her line back, and to see the fish that had run off with it. The story of its recapture was also impressive. However, what she really wanted to know was who had tied the ruddy knot between the fly line and the backing that had failed and led to losing the salmon in the first place.
‘Don’t look at me,’ said Michael. ‘I’ve never had a knot come undone like that.’
Then he had a thought. The ghillie had been unusually quiet over lunch and Michael remembered that the last time they had be

‘King mackerel, about 15 pounds.’
The next fish did the exact opposite to the first, spending a good deal of its time in the air.
‘Any takers?’ Mark shouted over his shoulder.
‘They’re all asleep,’ Don shouted. ‘Just keep ’em coming and enjoy yourself!’
The sport became frenetic. That second fish was a wahoo, and it was followed by jacks, two yellow-fin tuna, a mahimahi, more king mackerel and a decent-sized giant trevally. A tuna slapped around the deck and made enough noise to rouse one of the fishing party out of his stupor, and he was galvanised

Charles walked back towards the car. Then he stopped dead in his tracks and stared at O’Reilly. ‘If I dreamt all this, how did I know Maire’s name?’
O’Reilly had a weird look on his face. ‘That’s the bit I have no answer to, Mr Cuthbertson, no answer at all!’
SEA TROUT AND STANDING STONES
Night fishing for sea trout can be an eerie experience at the best of times. Link that to the atmosphere and ancient history of the Scottish islands, and you have all the ingredients for a classic ghost story.
och Bharp, on the island of South Uist in the Outer Hebr

Out on the edge of the reef, Martin fished plastic lures on spinning gear and was immediately hit by a big, 22-pound Spanish mackerel, which fought even harder than the Sydney kingfish. They were then surrounded by schools of bonito and tuna driving baitfish up to the surface and providing fantastic sport on the light spinning gear, hitting the lures as though they were the last food items out in the ocean. Later, fishing closer to the bottom, he hooked into something that he just couldn’t hold, which finally broke his line.
‘Rock cod or coral trout,’ said th

Victor felt very grown up as his parents walked down the sheep track and disappeared behind a crag at the head of the loch, because this was the first time they had trusted him to be on his own so far from home. He was all fingers and thumbs with excitement as he set up the rod, but at least he remembered to grease the fly line so that it would float, just like his father had taught him. And he only needed three attempts at a figure-of-eight knot before he managed to attach the gut leader.
It was time to select a fly, and suddenly being on his own wasn’t quit
