The fish went ballistic. Barbara had never had a salmon behave so erratically and never, of course, with that amount of weighted muscle to propel it. For three or four minutes she was completely out of control and expected the salmon to free itself at any moment. Then, just as suddenly, the chaos stopped.

In the lodge at lunchtime, Caroline was, of course, very grateful to have her line back, and to see the fish that had run off with it. The story of its recapture was also impressive. However, what she really wanted to know was who had tied the ruddy knot between the fly line and the backing that had failed and led to losing the salmon in the first place.
‘Don’t look at me,’ said Michael. ‘I’ve never had a knot come undone like that.’

The sport became frenetic. That second fish was a wahoo, and it was followed by jacks, two yellow-fin tuna, a mahimahi, more king mackerel and a decent-sized giant trevally. A tuna slapped around the deck and made enough noise to rouse one of the fishing party out of his stupor, and he was galvanised
