‘I don’t fish the Beaulieu at night, Andrew; too bloody creepy for my liking. No, I’ll leave the fish to you, but you’ll owe me one if you catch him.’
So the plot was hatched and Chris agreed to accompany Andrew on the quest. They went down to the lower river in the morning, when the tide was just flooding, and did a thorough recce. There were a number of small sea trout shoals lying against the far bank, some with large fish among them, although not the sort of size they had been told to expect. Then, just as the tide was stirring up the silt, they saw half

”Fraid so, yeah. Pity, that’s a real Arthur’s Lake beauty. Look, George, haul in the anchor and let’s see if we can’t manoeuvre the boat round the trunk and free the bugger.’
George wound in his line and set down his rod, and was giving the fish, now only just under the surface, a final look before reaching for the anchor rope. Then the unbelievable happened. A number of beetles were drifting down the wind lane, past the boat and over the fish. Even though George could see the fly in the trout’s jaw, so that it was obviously still tethered to the tree trunk,

‘Thanks,’ I said, then nearly had the rod ripped out of my hands as something akin to an express train hit the mepps and was gone. ‘Bloody hell, what was that?’
‘Tiger. Don’t worry, you’ll probably only hook into one in ten takes.’
He was right. I wasn’t short of obliging tiger fish; I just couldn’t get them to stay on the hook. I tried hitting them immediately, giving them time, not striking at all, hard strikes, soft strikes … and then one did stick, although I’m not sure I did anything significantly different to make it happen.
The fight was amazin

Victor’s heart was threatening to smash through his shirt by now, and he had an unbelievable adrenalin rush through his belly with the shock of that initial run. He knew this was something out of the ordinary, because he had never seen a trout behave like this on Lake Vyrnwy; it was a hugely different feeling.
A ridiculously long time seemed to pass before the fish slowed down, but it finally stopped and enabled Victor frantically to wind the little brass reel to retrieve some line. The trout came in quite easily to start with and Victor thought he had it bea

‘Ja, my boat partner, he is not well and stays in his bed, so we go fishing.’
‘Hand me your tackle, Sir. It looks like you’ve enough there to open your own shop!
The kit was stowed in the bottom of the boat. Patrick thought it slightly peculiar that Herr Schmidt had brought a large tackle box with him and quite so many rods, and even more so that none of them was made up. Anglers normally came out ready to start fishing immediately, but not Herr Schmidt on this occasion. He didn’t even start to tackle up as the fishing boat was cast off. Patrick opened up

‘Can you grab its tail?’ Steve asked, deciding that was the best place for the boatman, it being furthest away from the teeth end. ‘No way I’m touching any part of that fish!’

‘You’ve got to help somehow. I can’t handle a 6-foot shark on my own!’
The boatman merely shook his head and tried to move even further away.
Steve’s brain went into overdrive. ‘Okay. Look, you take the rod and leave the rest to me.’
The boatman didn’t look too happy about this plan either, but it must have seemed the least dangerous option for him, so h

Several years later, Mark was perched on a rock at the bottom of a deep ravine, fishing a bait down a long run of fast-flowing, turquoisecoloured water. Gaurav was again his guide, but gone was the previous depression.
‘We can’t fit all the people on the river who want to fish here,’ he said. ‘It’s strictly limited by licence now and we are full up throughout the season. The change has been most remarkable.’
‘Just what you said would happen. There is so little money to be earned by the people here, but we have worked with them to take advantage of the larg

The Frenchman used the tip of his rod with great dexterity, nearly falling in a couple of times but finally managing to grab the cord in his hand. He gingerly made his way to the shore and passed it to the ghillie, who proceeded to pull in the upstream end while the Frenchman climbed out of the river and frantically stripped all the fly line off his reel onto the grass.
I waded a little quicker now, fascinated by what was happening. I saw the Frenchman hand his rod to the ghillie, who attached the cord to the reel. It was then I realised that it was obviously

‘Colonel Nardhu?’ Steve shouted.
‘There is no one of that name here, Sir. This is a market stall. I don’t know this man.’
Steve raised his eyebrows. ‘Ah, right. I was told I could contact him here. Are you sure you don’t know him?’
‘Wait a minute, please.’
There was a brief pause, and he heard a more distant voice shouting out over the marketplace for anyone who might know the good colonel. Several minutes later, a new voice came down the line and yes, he knew of Colonel Nardhu and could provide contact details. And so the quest was underway.

‘He was playin’ a big halibut; close on 100 pounds, he reckoned. He had it right up near the boat, getting ready to pull it aboard. Just then, from underneath the boat, I tell you, a damned great polar bear came up and savaged the halibut! Biggest flatfish he’d ever caught in all his life, and he goes and loses it to a polar bear. Can you believe that?’

Since permission is required to move fish to make sure that diseases are not spread unintentionally between rivers, both Mark and the television company had agreements to return fish to the water where they were caught. The solid ‘rock’ had now woken up and Steve’s rod had bounced over into a solid arc pointing straight down into the water. Line came off the multiplier at ever increasing speed, and soon the fish was into a full run, a bit like a giant trevally but much heavier.
‘It’s a fish!’ cried Steve, ‘and not the one I hooked first time round. Would a big trevally take a smaller fish?’
The boatman looked doubtful and apprehensive at the same time. ‘Not unle

Then it swirled again and we saw it more clearly this time. ‘Looks a bit coloured,’ I said.
‘Positively brown,’ agreed Peter.
‘And furry,’ Geordie added. ‘That’s a flaming otter!’
And so we watched the otter fishing for a few more moments until it finally caught a brown trout, considerably bigger than anything we had ORKNEY OLIVES AND SEA TROUT

‘I’m going to try spinning,’ said Greg. ‘I bought a mepps in the tackle shop the other day.’
‘Okay, let’s see then.’
Greg bit the hook off the line, slid the shot and float off and tied on the mepps. He carefully flipped back the reel’s bail arm and flung the spinner towards the centre of the lake. Over the next half an hour, he became quite proficient at lobbing the spinner for up to 40 yards into the lake and winding it back at different speeds, as he had been told to do in a magazine article he had read about spinning.

‘Nonsense! I often help the fishermen off the lough. Old Maire never turned one of you away when you needed help.’
Charles slowly revived as his body began to dry and warm, and the stew tasted as good as anything he could remember eating. The old woman fussed kindly around him to make sure he was comfortable and soon, utterly exhausted, he was fast asleep, curled up on the floor in front of the fire.
When Charles woke, it was quite dark. He felt better, although still cold and weak. However, he was now conscious that people at the hotel must be worried abo

Peter finally managed to string enough words together to give everyone an idea what had taken place out on Bharp. His friends mostly greeted the tale with alcohol-fuelled ribaldry, but not so the locals. One of the ghillies thrust a large glass of whisky into his hand.
‘Drink that, Peter, I reckon you need it. You see, you don’t stay out on Bharp after dark. Everyone round here knows that.’

ike had heard so much about bonefish, tarpon, permit and jacks that he decided to forgo two years’ worth of foreign summer holidays to save enough for a week’s fishing in Cuba. He agreed to join friends in a party visiting a smart lodge, with experienced guides to take them out on the flats and into the mangrove pools. Ron nodded. ‘I wonder what the fish was that he took. It’s not like a bass to hit a flatfish, is it? Perhaps it was a bream after all.’

Peter had seen one family group in particular roaming the riverbank, consisting of a sow and two well-grown, ‘teenager’ cubs, although the mother had kept her offspring away from the campsite. He had even broken off from fishing for a while to film the animals, a shotgun ready in one hand just in case, while operating a rather shaky camera in the other.
That Thursday afternoon, the bears had passed by on their downstream journey around teatime, heading probably for the river mouth that, although some 15 miles away, would still be within their foraging territo

s Ernest Hemingway’s Old Man found out the hard way, playing a big fish is only half the story. Having battled your quarry to the surface, you have to land it, despatch it and then decide what to do with it afterwards, all of which can sometimes prove spectacularly difficult. The Old Man, of course, failed in his bid to transport his giant marlin back to port intact. A couple of decades after The Old Man and the Sea was published, during a sea-fishing trip and its aftermath, Barry Smithard had very nearly as exhaustive an all-round battle on his hands as Hemingw

The disintegrating tackle didn’t stop Bertie’s father from successfully netting the pike, and it took both his hands to haul it over the gunwale and into the bottom of the boat, where neither of them could quite believe its size.

The fish hangs in the hall of Bertie’s house, along with a brass plate recording its weight at 17 pounds, 6 ounces. He still fishes the lake for pike in winter, although he became a teenager without having ca

‘Especially the shark. People love them round here.’
The wounded crewman wandered off to find the doctor while the skipper took Peter and James, now reunited with Yvette and Rebecca, into the fishing clubhouse on the waterfront. This was colonial elegance in all its prewar splendour, freshly painted walls covered in fishing trophies, fans slowly revolving from the ceiling and waiters in white coats and gloves serving drinks. It was a complete throwback.

Back at the camp, showered and cleanly clothed, we assembled at the bar for pre-dinner drinks and there was the tiger fish, baked and the skin taken off. Instead of eating nuts or olives, we used our fingers, African style, to pick up chunks of tiger fish from between the bones. It tasted so good in that atmosphere, with the barbeque and wood-smoke smells on the air.
They say that Africa gets into your blood and that you feel compelled to return. I will do one day, and I’ll take a modern travel rod with some more backbone, because I want a chance again at a t

George shook his head. ‘I was watching it just beforehand. That fish was quietly sitting there, tethered for sure, but it wasn’t worried, otherwise it would have been fighting against the tension in the line. I’m convinced it came up and took those bugs as food.’
Brett laughed out loud. ‘We’ll never know for sure, but I’m inclined to agree with you, George. One thing’s for certain, though: that’s the biggest brown trout you’ll see this week, probably the luckiest as well.’
