Ben stroked the school eight to victory that afternoon and, a couple of days later, the crew were given a special salmon supper to celebrate. However, with his love of fishing common knowledge among his peers, he wasn’t sure that he ever managed to convince them, let alone his teachers, that he hadn’t poached the salmon from Tewkesbury weir pool. Such is the suspicion that surrounds the fisher.
Ben didn’t have to wait quite as long as he feared to fish a serious salmon river. At university in Newcastle in the north of England, he UNCONVENTIONAL TACTICS

Ray came up beside him. ‘Let him run as much as he wants. The only chance you’ve got is to let him knacker himself out completely. You won’t beat him any other way with the gear you’re using.’
No one actually timed the fight, but the general feeling afterwards was that it went on for more than an hour and a half. The shark made countless long runs, with Ray pouring water on the reel to cool down the effects of friction from the revolving spool against the braking system. Every time Rick regained line the fish would come tantalisingly close, but always staying

Things started badly. Steve’s passion for mixing with people from all countries and backgrounds led him and Nigel to the Russian guides’ quarters on the first evening – and a vodka-drinking competition. After several glasses, the head guide, a massive Canadian lumberjack, produced a bottle of near 100% proof liquor, put some into a tumbler and lit it with a match. While the spirit was still flaming, he threw it into his mouth and swallowed the lot in one go.
There came the inevitable question from Steve: ‘How hard can that be?’
He took the glass the Canadi

‘Just shows, you doesn’t it?’ crowed Robin. ‘A bit of effort, and a willingness to experiment, and then…’
‘Yes, alright, don’t rub it in,’ said Mike in a resigned tone. ‘You realise we’ve a job to do now, don’t you?’
Robin frowned. ‘What?’
‘This isn’t a recognised pool. We need to name it.’ ‘How about Robin’s Pot?’ Robin suggested modestly.
‘I’ve got a better idea,’ said John.
John took out his hip flask and poured a few drops of whisky into the water. ‘I name this place the CBA Pot.’ Robin’s frown deepened. ‘CBA?’ ‘Can’t Be Arsed,’ said John.

One autumn in the early 1950s, Jock Wilson, brother of local tackle dealer Rob Wilson, fished the Bengie Pool in drought conditions. As usual in these situations he used a single-handed rod, in this case a 9-footer with floating line and an 8-pound cast. A big fish came to his fly but stopped short of taking, and followed this with six more suspicious looks at successive casts before it finally lost its inhibitions and was hooked. Jock reported that the fish was in control for the vast majority of what ensued, with him hanging on while the salmon swam in continu

The island channel proved to be a great place to catch small roach. Almost as soon as the float settled itself in the water, it started bobbing up and down and then slid under. The fish were not very big, just a few ounces, but it was great fun and went on for about an hour before they stopped biting.
‘I’m going to try spinning,’ said Greg. ‘I bought a mepps in the tackle shop the other day.’
‘Okay, let’s see then.’
Greg bit the hook off the line, slid the shot and float off and tied on the mepps. He carefully flipped back the reel’s bail arm and flung

‘And of course you won’t be doing any fishing, will you?’ asked Julie, in a resigned, fishing widow sort of tone.
Tom grinned sheepishly. ‘Oh, I wouldn’t think I’ll have time. But since you mentioned it, I’ll take a small rod, just in case.’
‘Yes, I just bet you will!’
So a short spinning rod, fixed-spool reel, wire traces and large spoons with single hooks were included on the equipment list.
They met their guide, Thomas, at Chirundu. ‘What is a hippo?’ he asked rhetorically, as he started his ritual safety talk about the river and its wildlife. ‘A

If the strength of tackle doesn’t match the size of fish being played, you need patience andguileto have any chance of landing it. Michael Smith and his team showed both in spades, during surely one of the most remarkable fights with any freshwater fish.
ew anglers are better qualified to handle a large salmon than Michael Smith. He had already caught a fish of more than
43 pounds, on the Dalguise beat on Scotland’s River Tay, so he not only had the experience of landing that fish, but many others of more than 20 pounds and a sprinkling of 30s.
Michael

The other amazing tale happened to Bill. Because the Lyn’s pools were so small, fly-fishing was very difficult and the anglers mostly spun or wormed. Bill’s favourite spinner was a number five mepps, but they were difficult to get hold of in those days, so he was always especially careful not to lose one if he could possibly help it. He would far rather risk injury by wading between the rocks to unhook a snagged mepps than leave it there to rust.
On this occasion, Bill hooked a salmon, a good fish of about 10 pounds that fought hard and required plenty of rod

On one occasion, a poacher named Dave was inadvertently helped by Roy, the proprietor of the Watersmeet Tea Rooms, who, having seen the bailiff lurking about, tipped Dave off. Dave decided to head upstream towards Lower Stag Pool and later returned with a bright silver salmon. As he approached the Tea Rooms, he saw the bailiff and, in a moment of panic, he took the higher path to the right of the property; keen to dispose of any evidence, he lobbed the salmon through the fan light of the outside privy. Unfortunately, Roy happened to be sitting there at the time

Michael finally made the decision to place the boat over the top of the fish and try one last effort to bully it close enough to gaff. This very nearly succeeded on the first two attempts, but Hugh couldn’t quite reach it. On the third attempt, with the rod bent as far as it would go and Michael straining everything to get the fish onto the surface, the Collie Dog finally pulled out and they watched, helpless, as the salmon sunk ever so slowly away into the depths of the pool. The time was 5.45 p.m.
The Collie Dog had one of its trebles straightened and anoth

‘We’ve covered the whole ruddy fishery, every inch of it. We need fresher air.’
‘You two are too bloody scientific! What you don’t realise is that the salmon haven’t read the same books as you. Come on, let’s get fishing.’ ‘You go on, we’ll watch you.’
Robin sighed. ‘All right, I’ll go and start up at the top. Why don’t you two have another go here? Look, down there for instance, there’s a
likely-looking pot between those two rocks.’
‘What? No one fishes down there. It isn’t even a pool. Anything running the river goes straight through this water and

The fish went ballistic. Barbara had never had a salmon behave so erratically and never, of course, with that amount of weighted muscle to propel it. For three or four minutes she was completely out of control and expected the salmon to free itself at any moment. Then, just as suddenly, the chaos stopped.
Barbara was puffing heavily by this time and her arms were aching fit to drop off. If ever the boatman was wanting to intervene, now was probably the time, she told herself.
‘I can’t move it!’ she cried. ‘It’s gone absolutely solid… no it hasn’t, it’s o

In the lodge at lunchtime, Caroline was, of course, very grateful to have her line back, and to see the fish that had run off with it. The story of its recapture was also impressive. However, what she really wanted to know was who had tied the ruddy knot between the fly line and the backing that had failed and led to losing the salmon in the first place.
‘Don’t look at me,’ said Michael. ‘I’ve never had a knot come undone like that.’
Then he had a thought. The ghillie had been unusually quiet over lunch and Michael remembered that the last time they had be

‘King mackerel, about 15 pounds.’
The next fish did the exact opposite to the first, spending a good deal of its time in the air.
‘Any takers?’ Mark shouted over his shoulder.
‘They’re all asleep,’ Don shouted. ‘Just keep ’em coming and enjoy yourself!’
The sport became frenetic. That second fish was a wahoo, and it was followed by jacks, two yellow-fin tuna, a mahimahi, more king mackerel and a decent-sized giant trevally. A tuna slapped around the deck and made enough noise to rouse one of the fishing party out of his stupor, and he was galvanised

Robert brought the fish into the shallows, squatted down and held out the net. He drew in the sea trout and, just as he was about to slip the net under it, he suddenly saw its outline in the water as a burst of moonlight came through the cloud. It was enormous, much bigger than he had imagined. He couldn’t see it clearly, but it was considerably larger than the 6-pound grilse from earlier that evening. He was convinced the weight of the fish would go into double figures.
That hesitation, as he stared gobsmacked at the fish, was fatal. The sea trout splashed o

‘Oh, right.’ That made him feel a good deal better about the killing bit. ‘What, even the shark?’
‘Especially the shark. People love them round here.’
The wounded crewman wandered off to find the doctor while the skipper took Peter and James, now reunited with Yvette and Rebecca, into the fishing clubhouse on the waterfront. This was colonial elegance in all its prewar splendour, freshly painted walls covered in fishing trophies, fans slowly revolving from the ceiling and waiters in white coats and gloves serving drinks. It was a complete throwback.

‘Wow, what a story!’ cried Veronica. ‘And were they buried out on the island? Is that the problem?’
Kenny nodded. ‘Aye, they’re still out there all right. They were buried feet to feet, so that they could spend eternity looking at each other, and they were surrounded by holly bushes, which were holy trees to the ancients. That’s why there’s so much holly on the island now.’
‘Can you still see the graves?’
‘Aye. They’re stone slabs with different designs of cross etched into each one. You can still see the pile of stones where the tower used to be as wel

Mark smiled at him. ‘The fish are worth more alive than dead?’
‘What about the dynamite?’
‘Well, of course we can’t control it completely. Everyone here has it, as the government supplies it to build mountain roads and clear them after landslides. But enough people now know that by hurting the river they will only hurt their own interests. We have local agreements brokered by some of the headmen in the outlying villages, and also local watchers on the river to stop the killers. No one has heard an explosion here in the past four years.’

‘Better be careful, then. These steelheads fight like hell, yer know!’
On the second day Peter hooked and lost four big fish, and then finally landed a magnificent fresh 27-inch steelhead, silver flanked with iridescentpinkflashes.Aseveningapproachedhehookedabigsteelhead in front of Canoe Rock, which fought him for ages, continually leaping and showing off its freshness in the dwindling light. ‘You’ll never hook a tiger on a treble,’ he told me. ‘Too many teeth! And take more tackle than you’ll need. You can’t buy anything half decent over there and when you leave, you can gi

‘It’s a fish!’ cried Steve, ‘and not the one I hooked first time round. Would a big trevally take a smaller fish?’
The boatman looked doubtful and apprehensive at the same time. ‘Not unle
