Then they were walking through the ancient woodland and it became very dark indeed. A tawny owl hooted just above them, making Andrew jump half out of his skin, and something flew straight across in front of him; probably a nightjar, but it could just as easily have been an impish sprite sizing him up. Nervous butterflies were fast turning into terrified snakes slithering around his stomach. He expected Henry VIII’s cavalry to appear at any moment and mistake him for a monk.

‘Visit the Motor Museum and the abbey,’ suggested Chris.
They spent the morning inspecting cars, then went into the abbey and house in the afternoon. ‘Mummy, Mummy, I’ve caught this enormous… massive…!’
‘Calm down, Victor!’
He grabbed her arm and hauled her down the loch side towards the rock and his abandoned rod and net. He pointed excitedly at the rock well before they reached it, and was just about to shout out some more about his fantastic catch when he realised that the fish wasn’t there.
He left his mother and ran to the rock, thinking the trout must have fallen off. But it hadn’t, it had completely disappeared. He stared in disbelief: this could not be happening to him. He was desperate f

‘Put your hand underneath the reel to stop it!’
Greg cupped his hand under the revolving drum, gradually increasing pressure until the fish slowed down. He was then able to regain some line, until the fish changed direction and darted to the right, the line cutting through a lily-bed; several large green leaves were severed from their stems and floated free.

Steve usually travelled on holiday with his family, but this time he was alone, although his great friend Nigel was with him and probably still had Steve’s wife’s warning ringing in his ears, that she held him personally responsible for making sure her husband came home in one piece.
Things started badly. Steve’s passion

Charles climbed into the passenger seat and they began the drive back to the hotel.
‘Where did you spend the night?’ O’Reilly asked.
‘Old Maire took me into her cottage and looked after me.’
The car screeched to a halt so abruptly that Charles nearly hit his head on the windscreen.
Charles told his story to an increasingly incredulous O’Reilly. When he had finished, the man said nothing, turned the car round and drove back the other way. Charles asked him a couple of times where they were going, but the proprietor remained silent and stony faced.

Nothing happened! The wood floated away on the current and the rest of the debris sank out of sight, but not a single fish showed on the surface. Gagan stared into the water. He was speechless and was muttering something under his breath. It seemed to Mark as though he was meditating or deep in prayer. He stayed that way for a couple of minutes, then suddenly came out of his trance.
‘This is very enlightening for me,’ said Gagan reverently. ‘You see, I now understand that the mahseer must know when a true cremation is taking place. They appreciate that they a

Back at the campsite, the post mortem took place. Saban and Bola had measured the fish at 6 feet, 7 inches, nose to fork of tail, with a girth of 48 inches.
‘Okay,’ said Steve, ‘we know its dimensions, now what about its weight?’

It was obvious that David wasn’t enthusiastic, but he set the boat to drift down along the island’s shoreline. There wasn’t enough wind to dap, so they fished teams of traditional flies and, soon after starting, Veronica hooked a big sea trout. The fight went on for a good 10 minutes but, just as the boat drifted level with the southern tip of the island, the fish jumped and threw the hook.
‘Damn! That would have been my best ever!’ Veronica stated vehemently.
‘Don’t worry, there’s plenty more fish here,’ said John. ‘Look, they’re rising all over the place

In the boathouse, a pair of old scales, weighing up to 1000 pounds, hung from a wooden rafter. Duncan and Percy dragged the fish into the shed, stuck a steel hook into its gills and hauled it up onto the scales. As soon as its tail was clear of the floor, the needle shot round to the 1000-pound marker, there was a loud metallic twang and the ancient spring mechanism collapsed.
‘Right, Percy, plan B. Ring for a truck and we’ll take it into town.’
Percy made the phone call, then announced that the lorry wouldn’t arrive for a couple of hours. Not requiring an

Andrew finally plucked up the courage to go over and take a look at the crime scene. He stood up and shone his torch. No need to keep hidden now; sea trout were the last thing he was worried about. He crept along the bank and the beam of light caught the hunched-up figure of Chris, his back still leaning against a fence post beside the field. Then, oh joy! He moved, his arm coming up to cover his eyes against the glare of the torch.
KING HENRY’S HORSEMEN
‘What the hell happened?’ cried Andrew.
Chris’s face was white as a ghost and the expression on his

‘We’ll ambush ’em as they come past,’ said Brett. ‘Every feeding trout in this part of the system will pass us here, so you should be able to fill your boots.’
They caught trout steadily, until Helen had a particularly savage swirl at her Para Dun.
‘Jeeees!’ shouted Brett. ‘Quick, cover him again. That was some fish. There, Helen, he’s just to your left.’
Helen cast again just in front of the trout and twitched the Para Dun slightly. Another swirl and this time the fish was firmly hooked, and set off on a powerful run in the opposite direction, away fro

The truck duly arrived and drove them round to St Ann’s Harbour, where they found a reliable set of scales that would provide an authentic weight for the record books. The fish was hauled up by the tail… whereupon the rocks promptly fell out from the mouth, to the hilarity of the assembled crowd.
Once Duncan had charmed his way out of the embarrassment, and they were sure no boulders were left in the fish, the weight was officially set at 977 pounds, a new world record for blue-fin tuna by more than 20 pounds. The fish measured 9 feet, 9 inches in length.

Jock’s fish shows one of the problems of trying to land large fish on smallish rivers. To have a serious chance of beaching, say, a 50-pounder, one really needs the river space for the fish to take off on long runs and so tire itself out. On a river like the Brora, with comparatively small pools, they could spend all day swimming round and round and never get sufficiently tired for the angler to gain enough control to net or beach them. Even so, several anglers came tantalisingly close in the years between 1970 and the early 2000s.
In about 1970, the local po
