The head shaking and solid weight on the line didn’t feel like a sea trout. ‘That wasn’t my fish!’ Hughie called out. ‘Honestly, Simon, this feels a bit more serious!’

‘Six hundred yards of 30 pound.’
Bola shook his head. ‘Not enough. Come on, into the coracle: we must follow this fish.’

Out on the edge of the reef, Martin fished plastic lures on spinning gear and was immediately hit by a big, 22-pound Spanish mackerel, which fought even harder than the Sydney kingfish. They were then surrounded by schools of bonito and tuna driving baitfish up to the surface and providing fantastic sport on the light spinning gear, hitting the lures as though they were the last food items out in the ocean.
