‘Mummy, Mummy, I’ve caught this enormous… massive…!’
‘Calm down, Victor!’
He grabbed her arm and hauled her down the loch side towards the rock and his abandoned rod and net. He pointed excitedly at the rock well before they reached it, and was just about to shout out some more about his fantastic catch when he realised that the fish wasn’t there.

‘Put your hand underneath the reel to stop it!’
Greg cupped his hand under the revolving drum, gradually increasing pressure until the fish slowed down. He was then able to regain some line, until the fish changed direction and darted to the right, the line cutting through a lily-bed; several large green leaves were severed from their stems and floated free.
Somehow or other Greg managed to hang on to the fish, letting it run away when it wanted but always managing to stop it before it reached the dense lilies in the middle of the lake. Slowly, over the ne

Things started badly. Steve’s passion

Then they were walking through the ancient woodland and it became very dark indeed. A tawny owl hooted just above them, making Andrew jump half out of his skin, and something flew straight across in front of him; probably a nightjar, but it could just as easily have been an impish sprite sizing him up. Nervous butterflies were fast turning into terrified snakes slithering around his stomach. He expected Henry VIII’s cavalry to appear at any moment and mistake him for a monk.
They finally reached the stile that led into the sea trout field, at which point Andr

Charles climbed into the passenger seat and they began the drive back to the hotel.
‘Where did you spend the night?’ O’Reilly asked.
‘Old Maire took me into her cottage and looked after me.’
The car screeched to a halt so abruptly that Charles nearly hit his head on the windscreen.
Charles told his story to an increasingly incredulous O’Reilly. When he had finished, the man said nothing, turned the car round and drove back the other way. Charles asked him a couple of times where they were going, but the proprietor remained silent and stony faced.

if boiled eggs were on the menu: they could be anything from rock solid to raw, depending on his mood that morning.
The one saving grace was that Ron was extremely amiable and it was difficult to be mad at him for long. He never let anyone suffer from his joking and would always make sure that sandwiches, tea, fish and chips and whatever else were swiftly replaced from his own wallet. Even when he slipped a bag of frozen squid into Terry’s bag at the end of a day’s fishing on the pier, knowing that Terry wouldn’t be out again for a few weeks and the squid wou

Nothing happened! The wood floated away on the current and the rest of the debris sank out of sight, but not a single fish showed on the surface. Gagan stared into the water. He was speechless and was muttering something under his breath. It seemed to Mark as though he was meditating or deep in prayer. He stayed that way for a couple of minutes, then suddenly came out of his trance.
‘This is very enlightening for me,’ said Gagan reverently. ‘You see, I now understand that the mahseer must know when a true cremation is taking place. They appreciate that they a

Back at the campsite, the post mortem took place. Saban and Bola had measured the fish at 6 feet, 7 inches, nose to fork of tail, with a girth of 48 inches.
‘Okay,’ said Steve, ‘we know its dimensions, now what about its weight?’
Saban sighed, frowned and lent forward into the light of the camp fire. ‘We have been discussing this and I think we have come to a decision. When I first held the fish, I thought it was 120 pounds.’
‘But when I lifted it, I put it bigger,’ said Bola, ‘and the measurements prove this.’

It was obvious that David wasn’t enthusiastic, but he set the boat to drift down along the island’s shoreline. There wasn’t enough wind to dap, so they fished teams of traditional flies and, soon after starting, Veronica hooked a big sea trout. The fight went on for a good 10 minutes but, just as the boat drifted level with the southern tip of the island, the fish jumped and threw the hook.
‘Damn! That would have been my best ever!’ Veronica stated vehemently.
‘Don’t worry, there’s plenty more fish here,’ said John. ‘Look, they’re rising all over the place

In the boathouse, a pair of old scales, weighing up to 1000 pounds, hung from a wooden rafter. Duncan and Percy dragged the fish into the shed, stuck a steel hook into its gills and hauled it up onto the scales. As soon as its tail was clear of the floor, the needle shot round to the 1000-pound marker, there was a loud metallic twang and the ancient spring mechanism collapsed.
‘Right, Percy, plan B. Ring for a truck and we’ll take it into town.’
Percy made the phone call, then announced that the lorry wouldn’t arrive for a couple of hours. Not requiring an

Andrew finally plucked up the courage to go over and take a look at the crime scene. He stood up and shone his torch. No need to keep hidden now; sea trout were the last thing he was worried about. He crept along the bank and the beam of light caught the hunched-up figure of Chris, his back still leaning against a fence post beside the field. Then, oh joy! He moved, his arm coming up to cover his eyes against the glare of the torch.

‘What the hell happened?’ cried Andrew.
Chris’s face was white as a ghost and the expression on his

They had no real idea what fish were in the lake and, at 10 years old, they only had very basic angl

Barry nodded, trying hard to pump the fish away from the wreck. ‘Good one too by the feel of it.’
As is often the case with big conger, it became a dour fight, with Barry winning back line, only to lose it again as the fish bored back towards the wreck. A war of attrition ensued for a good 20 minutes before the eel finally broke surface.
‘Blimey!’ cried the skipper. ‘We ain’t had one that big for years!’

They reached the track and turned down towards the cottage, the car bouncing around on the potholed surface. Soon the cottage came into vie

The keeper shook his head. ‘Nothing to speak of. Why?’
David told him what had happened and the keeper listened increasingly intently.
‘You’re sure it was a human figure?’
‘Yes, I am. Anyway, what else could it have been, standing in the middle of the river like that?
‘A cow or a deer or something?’
‘I don’t think so, it was definitely a man.

Robin made his way gingerly down the cliff path and arrived just above the big rock at the top of the run. There was another, smaller boulder about 20 yards below and he was quite right: at this height of water, you could see there was a small pot that might conceivably hold a fish, if there were any fish to hold.
Robin threw a couple of speculative short casts, presumably in case anything was holding just in front of him. From their vantage point, Mike and John could have told him there was nothing there. They could see every pebble on the bottom, and fish t

Ben didn’t have to wait quite as long as he feared to fish a serious salmon river. At university in Newcastle in the north of England, he UNCONVENTIONAL TACTICS
made friends with one of his peers, Richard, whose father owned fishing on the Helmsdale, one of Scotland’s premier fisheries and a place where it was usually considered necessary to allow the previous generation to hang up their rods before gaining an invitation to fish.
It can be cold on the Helmsdale in early season but, unlike many Scottish rivers, there is still a healthy run of spring salmon

‘What time did you catch your tarpon?’
John shrugged. ‘About 11.30, I suppose.’
‘And what about yesterday, didn’t you catch a bonefish in the afternoon?’
John scratched his head, as though trying to think through the rum haze. ‘Yeah, I did. A couple, actually.’
‘And how many hours in a day?’
‘Exactly! You caught a permit, a tarpon and a boney inside 24 hours, which means inside a day. You did the slam!’

Several years later, Mark was perched on a rock at the bottom of a deep ravine, fishing a bait down a long run of fast-flowing, turquoisecoloured water. Gaurav was again his guide, but gone was the previous depression.
‘We can’t fit all the people on the river who want to fish here,’ he said. ‘It’s strictly limited by licence now and we are full up throughout the season. The change has been most remarkable.’
‘Just what you said would happen. There is so little money to be earned by the people here, but we have worked with them to take advantage of the larg

I didn’t feel all that lucky, as my rod was totally inadequate for the fight. The fish just kept swimming towards Zambia and nothing I did made the slightest difference to it; it didn’t deviate once from its course.
‘Try stopping it before it gets to the middle,’ said the guide optimistically. ‘The current’s too strong out there and you’ll never hold it.’
‘Er … slight problem on that front,’ I suggested. ‘I can’t stop it in here, let alone out there.’
The fish did turn, miraculously, and come back to the boat, but I rather fancy it did so just to give

‘No way!’ Simon took the huge salmon net off his back and drove himself through the water towards the croy. ‘I’ve had a change of heart. It’s got personal now and I’m not letting this bugger get the better of us. Just hold him there if you can.’
‘Careful! It’s a bloody sight deeper on the other side of the…’
His warning came too late. Simon had already clambered over the croy and was now actually swimming. He disappeared behind the bush and Hughie was operating completely blind, hands above his head and clamped on the reel so that the salmon was kept at

It was at Overflow Pool that he met an angler who, with a friend, had travelled up from Cornwall. He told John that he had just caught a grilse but, to his knowledge, no other fish had been caught recently and those anglers present in the morning had given up in despair and gone home. It transpired that the angler had killed the fish, but it was not the fresh, silver, sea-liced salmon John would have expected; rather, it was verging on being stale and had certainly been around for a few weeks.
John fished until dusk, covering 2 miles of water and fishing all
