‘Christ, Bill,’ Michael muttered at last. ‘I knew he was big, but that’s just bloody ridiculous!’
The fight went on and on, but just when Michael sensed the fish might be tiring, the river suddenly began to rise; the hydro plant had sent down an extra foot of water, so the increased flow turned the advantage completely back to the salmon. It was also harder to row the boat upstream, so Michael took the oars for a spell and gave the rod to Bill.
It was now that the fish, perhaps spurred on by the increased water, changed its pattern and, instead of keeping

brought to the boat that week. The animal ate it quickly on the surface and dived back under. We didn’t see it again, as hard as we looked for it all around the boat. Unbelievable as it seemed in that expanse of water, the otter simply disappeared.
We caught plenty more fish during the morning and decided to go back to the Merkister for lunch, rather than our normal habit of landing on one of the many islands in the loch. There were plenty of people in the bar to hear Geordie’s account of the morning, but it was soon obvious that no one believed a word of it.

Gaurav had thrown his hands in the air. ‘They will never change. Not while they are hungry and they believe that goonch are taking their children.’
Several years later, Mark was perched on a rock at the bottom of a deep ravine, fishing a bait down a long run of fast-flowing, turquoisecoloured water. Gaurav was again his guide, but gone was the previous depression.
‘We can’t fit all the people on the river who want to fish here,’ he said. ‘It’s strictly limited by licence now and we are full up throughout the season. The change has been most remarkable.’
