‘You two are too bloody scientific! What you don’t realise is that the salmon haven’t read the same books as you. Come on, let’s get fishing.’ ‘You go on, we’ll watch you.’
Robin sighed. ‘All right, I’ll go and start up at the top. Why don’t you two have another go here? Look, down there for instance, there’s a
likely-looking pot between those two rocks.’
‘What? No one fishes down there. It isn’t even a pool. Anything running the river goes straight through this water and doesn’t stop until it gets to the beat above us.’

Steve’s idea of a Ferrari was very apt. The fish towed them much faster than the river’s flow, so that they literally tore through the first rapid like a speedboat, through a short pool, then into a second, boulder-strewn shallow reach where the inevitable happened: the line became entangled round several rocks as the fish picked a route between them. Steve was desperate that the line shouldn’t chaff on the boulders, but Saban and Bola controlled the coracle brilliantly with their flimsy paddles and managed to extricate the line around or over all the obstacles.

‘It’s a sea lion!’ shouted the boatman. ‘A bloody great sea lion’s taken your fish!’
‘And I bet he’s eating it, the swine!’ she shouted, still holding on tightly to the rod and keeping up the pressure on the salmon-cum-sea lion. ‘Oh, he’s let go now… I think.’
Barbara began reeling in the salmon; or part of it, at least. She could still clearly see the sea lion on the surface, chewing on what she presumed was the tail end of the fish, seeing as the head end seemed to be coming across the surface towards the boat. The fight, of course, was over.
