However, his record stood for a further 20 years, when it was beaten by just a few pounds. And then, in 1979, a colossal fish was taken off the coast of Nova Scotia that weighed a smidgeon under 1500 pounds. That would have seemed an impossible dream to Jack Ross back in 1911, but he and Duncan Hodgson would surely be proud that their pioneering legacy lives on. Now the challenge for the future is to ensure that unsustainable commercial pressure on the fantastic blue-fin tuna does not condemn the species merely to distant memories and record books.

‘It’s a dog otter,’ Geordie agreed. ‘Definitely different from this morning.’
The otter kept watching us, although we never seemed to get any closer, despite the fact we were drifting. He must have been backpedalling to keep his distance while he studied these strange people invading his watery habitat, and then, like the earlier encounter, he simply slipped below the surface and was gone.
‘I’m going to enjoy hearing you describe this one in the bar tonight,’ I told Geordie. ‘It might be better to keep quiet about it, because no bugger’s going to believe u

‘Heck, they don’t give you much of a chance, do they?’
Gendall grinned. ‘Not much, no.’
The afternoon ended without a fish and John feeling rather chastened by the experience. He had cast at four beautiful trout, all over 3 pounds, but not one had been tempted to give the fly even a cursory glance. And they had spooked all too easily.
‘Right,’ said Gendall over a beer in the lodge, ‘that’s the introduction bit over. Tomorrow we’ll go after some proper fish, but you’ve got to forget your chalkstream fishing from home; I’ve done that and it’s kid’s stuff

Once Duncan had charmed his way out of the embarrassment, and they were sure no boulders were left in the fish, the weight was officially set at 977 pounds, a new world record for blue-fin tuna by more than 20 pounds. The fish measured 9 feet, 9 inches in length.
Over more celebratory whisky, the discussions went on, especially about the true weight of the fish as it would have been when it first came out of the water.
‘Blood loss and six hours’ dehydration,’ Duncan mused, ‘must have taken a few pounds off. How many d’you reckon, Percy?’
‘Easily that. T

The Indian Ocean has long been a big-game fisher’s paradise, one of the great adventures for the global angler. But the world has changed from Kenya’s colonial past and conservation has a stronger pull on the modern angler.
n 1998 Peter Spillett, his partner Yvette and children Rebecca and James, had enjoyed a two-week Kenyan safari and were based near
Malindi on the east African coast for a few days’ relaxation before going home to the UK. He had always been a bit ambivalent about big-game fishing: concern about the destruction of apex predators such as b

The helicopter wouldn’t come back for anything, so it was left to the camp medic to patch Steve up as well as he could, which mainly consisted of keeping him full of painkillers and vodka for the rest of the week. However, probably the best antidote to the agony in his ribs and face was the fact that Steve accounted for 160 salmon to his own rod in one of the most astonishing weeks in the Varzuga’s fishing history. Between them the party caught more than 800 fish, several of which weighed more than 30 pounds and a couple over 40.
Steve flew back to London wit
