When Mark first visited the border area between India and Nepal, the goonch was public enemy number one in the river. Angling was hardly ever practised along its Himalayan reaches, although nets, snares and other unsavoury methods, such as dynamite blasting and poisoning, were common. Fish of all sorts, even entire ecosystems, were commonly persecuted by people from the surrounding towns and villages,
sometimes for food but often just for ‘fun’. The fish were literally blown out of the water, although very few goonch were ever eaten. They either died unseen o

KODIAK BEARS AND STEELHEAD
Steelhead, the migratory form of rainbow trout, is one of the great game species and a must-catch for any globe-travelling fly fisher. The fact that bears inhabit similar country to steelhead, and enjoy eating them, adds an interesting dimension to Alaskan fishing trips.
Peter Hayes and a friend, Nigel Sturgeon, had both been to Alaska’s Kodiak Island before. However, whereas Nigel had caught steelhead, Peter never had, despite catching large numbers of the various species

The weather closed in very quickly and the rain became much harder. He was wearing an oiled jacket, but his trousers were soon soaked. He sat there, shivering, until his worst fear happened: the engine spluttered and died, almost certainly having run out of fuel. The boat swung round, beam on to the waves, and began rolling wildly, so that he couldn’t even try to restart the engine. He dragged himself to the middle seat, put out the oars and managed to turn the boat’s bow into the waves. He didn’t have a hope of rowing against the weather, but he had enough know

‘But you won’t catch salmon or sea trout here, Mister Schmidt, sir, you need to be out in open water for them, to be sure, now.’
‘No, I fish here today!’
Patrick stared at him, open mouthed. ‘Why?’
‘Eels, Patrick, eels. I fish for zem today.’

‘Something huge ate the perch. Must have been …’
Greg nodded. ‘Must have been, mustn’t it?’
The two boys couldn’t get the vision of that great swirl out of their minds. They talked about it for the rest of the day and agreed that they just had to try to catch that fish.
Having read another article on pike fishing, Richard went into town on the Friday and took his pocket money into the tackle shop while his mother was buying groceries next door. He came out with a wire trace and two treble hooks, and a recommendation from the tackle dealer to buy some

‘Come on,’ Veronica encouraged, ‘you’ve got to tell us now.’
David glanced at Kenny. ‘It’s just spooky there, that’s all.’

Then they were walking through the ancient woodland and it became very dark indeed. A tawny owl hooted just above them, making Andrew jump half out of his skin, and something flew straight across in front of him; probably a nightjar, but it could just as easily have been an impish sprite sizing him up. Nervous butterflies were fast turning into terrified snakes slithering around his stomach. He expected Henry VIII’s cavalry to appear at any moment and mistake him for a monk.
They finally reached the stile that led into the sea trout field, at which point Andr

AMAZING FISHING STORIES
He fished on but without success. The following day, he decided to retrace his steps and he fished his way up past Watersmeet until he came to the pool where he had released the fish. His first cast towards the head of the pool with the faithful mepps brought an instant response, and he found himself connected to a salmon that put up a determined fight before he beached it at the tail of the pool. John applied the priest and, as he looked down at the fish, he couldn’t help but wonder whether this was the salmon he had saved yesterday.

An iceberg was responsible for the most famous maritime disaster of all time, but you wouldn’t normally expect one to play a major role in a salmon-fishing trip, even one inside the Arctic Circle.
he Kola Peninsula, in north west Russia, offers some of the best fishing for Atlantic salmon in the world, but it is an incredibly remote place and can still be freezing cold in the middle of June. It was once a major training ground for Stalin’s Arctic troops and has never really lost that sense of military secrecy. This is perpetuated by the entry airport, Murmans

John nodded. ‘True.’ His heart was beating slightly faster, though, and he exchanged glances with Mike. Any rain was better than nothing.

Michael retrieved what was left, but realised that the whole fly line and about half the backing had gone. There was 70 yards of line out there somewhere, so he ran back to the car and tore up the track to find Bill Hatten. Bill dropped everything and went back to Minister’s with Michael, where they climbed into the boat and went searching the deeper water at the tail of the pool.
With the flow so low, the water was gin clear and they soon spotted the fly line lying about 10 feet down. Michael threaded the remaining backing through the rod rings and tied on a

He hadn’t been fishing long and was working the flies over a ledge that dropped into deeper water when, at about 9.30, he had a vicious take on the Collie Dog. He had a fleeting view of the silver flash as the salmon turned away with the fly and, although he was too far away to guess the size accurately, he sensed that it was much bigger than the norm for the river. His immediate estimate was 30–35 pounds, which was going to be fun on the 10-footer.
The fish wallowed around for a bit, then headed down towards the tail of the pool. Michael followed, wading up

This was the scene when Dr Brett Wolf, a fly-fishing aficionado who used to run Blue Lake Lodge, took George and Helen Westropp on their first trip on Arthur’s Lake. The wind was blowing steadily from the south and creating wide wind lanes close to shore, right above the desiccated tree trunks; it was immediately obvious that the trout were feeding in them on the terrestrial bugs.
‘What flies, Brett?’ asked George.
‘Anything you like … just so long as it’s the Para Dun!’ ‘Don’t you use anything else?’ asked Helen. ‘Never had to yet.’

BANANAS, COCA-COLA AND TARPON
Fizzy drinks and fruit seem a strange recipe for catching one of the world’s hardest fighting, most acrobatic fish – but they worked their magic for one fortunate fisherman.
y the time Colin reached his 50th birthday, he was a wellrespected member of Wiltshire’s Salisbury fishing society in the
UK. Working in a tackle dealer’s shop in the city centre, and a well-known angler around Wiltshire and Hampshire coarse and trout fisheries, he reached his half-century as a highly popular, jovial soul who knew as much as most about

to catch a King in the sea, where heavier tackle and fish baits are the norm. She was into her 80s when she finally made the trip.
Barbara flew to Anchorage, the hub of Alaskan salmon fishing safaris, and from there she took a sea plane further up the coast. On her first morning she found herself in a large bay sitting in a good-sized, comfortable boat, two rods fishing heavy outriggers down deep and using flashing lures to attract the fish in close, and then herring as bait for the main hooks.
Her rod suddenly buckled over and she reached out to grab it,

The most recent encounter with a really big salmon was in October 2001. Captain Tim Ritson and party were fishing the lower river, three weeks after a 38-pound fish had been caught. Captain Ritson and retired Helmsdale ghillie Donald MacKay fished the Well pool and lost a salmon of around 25 pounds at the net. Soon afterwards another fish took gently and went into a sulk, first on their side of the river, then moving to the far side and refusing to move an inch.

Robin frowned. ‘What?’
‘This isn’t a recognised pool. We need to name it.’ ‘How about Robin’s Pot?’ Robin suggested modestly.
‘I’ve got a better idea,’ said John.
John took out his hip flask and poured a few drops of whisky into the water. ‘I name this place the CBA Pot.’ Robin’s frown deepened. ‘CBA?’ ‘Can’t Be Arsed,’ said John.
The name has stuck. And when the water is low on the Coquet, the threesome wouldn’t dream of fishing without a few casts in the CBA Pot; even though, to their knowledge, it hasn’t produced another fish from that day to this

The fight went on and on, but just when Michael sensed the fish might be tiring, the river suddenly began to rise; the hydro plant had sent down an extra foot of water, so the increased flow turned the advantage completely back to the salmon. It was also harder to row the boat upstream, so Michael took the oars for a spell and gave the rod to Bill.
It was now that the fish, perhaps spurred on by the increased water, changed its pattern and, instead of keeping to the deeper channel and the far side of the pool, headed quickly for a stone croy, stripping line o

However, rather than dive away to safety, it proceeded to swim slowly round the boat, eyeing up the two men while it continued to shake its head and rid itself of the final pieces of plastic. Then, with a great slash of its tail, it dived away out of sight and was gone.
The boatman was grinning inanely, out of sheer relief rather than with humour, Steve suspected. The man reached out his hand.
‘Very good, sir. Bloody glad it wasn’t great white, though.’

Ray came up beside him. ‘Let him run as much as he wants. The only chance you’ve got is to let him knacker himself out completely. You won’t beat him any other way with the gear you’re using.’
No one actually timed the fight, but the general feeling afterwards was that it went on for more than an hour and a half. The shark made countless l

‘Visit the Motor Museum and the abbey,’ suggested Chris.
They spent the morning inspecting cars, then went into the abbey and house in the afternoon. There was a guide in the house talking about the ghosts that were seen around the estate, even sometimes on the river. Hughie, and a friend, Simon, were on the river early one morning, having seen a weather forecast the previous evening that promised rain by midday. The river was already at a good height for fly fishing, but it wouldn’t need much of a deluge to make it unfishable, which would be a pity, because there were plenty of fresh salmon about.
It was September and some stale sea trout were being a nuisance. Both men had caught and returned a couple of fish in the lower pools, AMAZING FISHING STORIES
but Hughie was now back at the top of the beat in the Junction Poo

‘They’re all asleep,’ Don shouted. ‘Just keep ’em coming and enjoy yourself!’
The sport became frenetic. That second fish was a wahoo, and it was followed by jacks, two yellow-fin tuna, a mahimahi, more king mackerel and a decent-sized giant trevally. A tuna slapped around the deck and made enough noise to rouse one of the fishing party out of his stupor, and he was galvanised into enough action to take the rod and play a lively Queenfish, which meant that Don could stay on the wheel while Mark played crew and boated the fish. However, although the Japanese s
