I distinctly heard the reel ratchet go. It was not dissimilar to the moment in Jaws when the great white takes its first tentative hold of the shark specialist’s bait. A few turns of the reel and then it stopped.
‘Bit of weed,’ suggested someone else, but I noticed that everyone was staring at the rod, just as I was.
It is difficult to describe the atmosphere on the landing stage, this far detached from the event, but there was a definite feeling at that moment that something out of the ordinary was about to happen. I was gripped by it, watching the tip of

‘Well now, I’ve fished here all my life and I’ve not lost an angler yet. I dare say I’ll not be starting with either of you two today.’
Helen winced. ‘But the wind, Peter, and the rain? Surely no selfrespecting salmon’s going to take in these conditions.’
The grin widened. ‘You’ll wait your whole life for a day like this on the salmon. Trust me. The wind’s veering into the south and that alone means it’ll be worth a cast or two. Come on now, you’re both experienced enough to fish in this, otherwise I wouldn’t suggest it. It’s just a question of confidence.

Steve Edge arrived in Russia for the opening week of the Varzuga River season. The trip out to the river was noisy, with nothing other to look at through the helicopter portholes than a flat, snow-covered tundra and the occasional reindeer herd running in panic from the aircraft engines. He had a fleeting vision of being transported out to some Siberian prison camp, never to be heard of again. Then he looked down at the brand new carrying case containing his salmon rods and his heart leapt. He had been dreaming of this trip for months and he couldn’t wait to get

‘Might be,’ said one of the crew. ‘Big fish, anyway.’
Peter fought a battle of attrition with the fish for more than half an hour, gaining line painfully slowly against what was, for the most part, a dead weight on the other end. At times it was like playing a log of wood, except that the occasional head shake and short, dogged run proved that he was hooked up to something animate.
The wire trace finally emerged from the water and a long, grey-brown shape slowly materialised from the depths.
‘Shark, shark!’ a crewman shouted at the skipper, and they all

‘Come on, man, wake up! Tie me on another size 10 treble and let’s get some more grilse on the bank. And don’t leave it too late to catch that train.’
Murdo found an excuse in the afternoon to go and make sure the other guests and their ghillies were happy. Really, he just wanted to be out of the major’s sight. He still felt numb.
Half an hour later, he returned to where the major should have been, but he wasn’t. Perhaps he had hooked that mighty fish again, which had made him late coming down to the lower pool. Murdo walked up the bank, past the shallow r

The river cried out classic steelhead habitat, with glides, runs, riffles, islands, pools, shallow weed beds and numerous large rocks providing perfect lies for fish. The water was shallow, but with small boulders strewn around the bottom and the fast flow, wading too far out became dangerous. Peter started fishing in runs between the weeds, catching stunningly beautiful sea-run Arctic char up to five pounds, decked out in their spawning colours: dark greens, reds, orange, white, black and silver. Then the first coho salmon came to hand, a fresh-run, silver fish

At that time of year, the sun went down quickly and it was quite dark by 6 o’clock. Having landed a goonch at 4.30, Steve was happy to pack away his gear and return to camp for one more night under the stars before the long journey home. However, Seban and Bola suggested one more move downstream and a final cast into a pool they hadn’t fished in before, at the head of a series of shallow rapids.
The sun was already low behind the hills and the light was beginning to fade. Steve had just suggested five more minutes when the clutch on his Shimano Calcutta reel

Mark climbed out of the fighting chair and took hold of the marlin’s bill, which enabled Don to use both hands to work the hook free.
‘No problem, I take pictures,’ said a heavily accented voice from behind. Mark looked back over his shoulder to see a grinning Japanese taking photographs.
‘Okay, that’s enough,’ Don said. ‘Let her go back now.’
The fish stayed beside the boat looking at them for a few moments, then sank down, twisted away and disappeared.
The Japanese shook Mark’s hand vigorously. ‘Very good. We catch huge fish, yes?’
Mark made all

‘That’s one hell of a fish, too,’ said Steve. ‘Biggest tarpon I’ve ever seen, on this or any other boat out of the Keys.’
Colin had dropped the rod and was leaning on the boat, muscles screaming with exhaustion but with an unbelievable feeling of achievement in his head. Adrenalin was coursing round his veins faster than he had never experienced before, and he couldn’t speak for the moment. He was just staring down at the monstrous tarpon in front of him.
Peter held the end of the tape against the fish’s tail, while Steve measured up the lateral line to it

‘Big, isn’t it?’ was all Frank could say.
‘Er, lads, what’s that bloody great thing sticking out of its mouth?’
‘It’s a long story…’
Terry’sworstfearswererealised.HeandFrankwereribbedmercilessly for the rest of Ron’s all too brief life after that. For the record, the fish went 123/4 pounds, by far the biggest bass any of them had ever caught, or had ever seen, come to that.
As for Terry and Frank, they were still planning that one infallible plan to get their own back, right until the end. Sadly, they ran out of time.
You can’t catch fish unless

Line was being ripped off the reel against a fully wound-down brake. The rod bent over at a ridiculous angle and Barbara was convinced it would shatter at any moment. All she could do was hang on until something gave.
The boatman was leaning against the gunwale at the transom stern, staring at the line cutting through the water. ‘He’s coming up,’ he said and glanced back at Barbara. ‘Can you feel ‘im?’
‘Yes… I think you’re right. Yes, he’s definitely coming to the top.’
Then, about 120 yards behind the boat, there was a huge swirl and a large, brown h

‘Well, you won’t catch anything sulking up here,’ retorted Robin. ‘A salmon won’t take if you haven’t got a line in the water.’
‘We’ve covered the whole ruddy fishery, every inch of it. We need fresher air.’
‘You two are too bloody scientific! What you don’t realise is that the salmon haven’t read the same books as you. Come on, let’s get fishing.’ ‘You go on, we’ll watch you.’
Robin sighed. ‘All right, I’ll go and start up at the top. Why don’t you two have another go here? Look, down there for instance, there’s a

‘Shoot him, Pete,’ said Steve quietly.
Peter waited a fraction longer, then fired at 10 yards’ range. The cracker shell hit the bear slap on the nose, bounced off as intended, fell into the grass and exploded like a Thunderflash. The bear skidded to a halt, spun round a hundred and eighty degrees and galloped out of the camp as fast as his legs would carry him.
KODIAK BEARS AND STEELHEAD
“Hell,” said Steve. “That bear must have been doin’ thirty miles an hour on the way in.” Peter laughed nervously, loading another cracker shell into the breach. “Yeah,

‘Spinner,’ the skipper identified the shark from the wheelhouse door. ‘Nice fish. I reckon 150. Good catch.’
One of the crewman plucked up the courage to go forward and extract the hook from the shark’s mouth. He was obviously no fan of sharks and looked genuinely scared of this one, despite the number of times it had been smacked over the head. Now, though, just at the critical moment when the hook was about to come loose, the fish gave an energetically nervous shake of its head. The hook, under tension from the line being held tightly, flew out and lodged f

Victor kept tripping over himself in his panic to get ashore, but then dropped to his knees beside the fish and killed it with the stone. He couldn’t believe the size of it: it was absolutely massive. One of the Lake AMAZING FISHING STORIES

‘What happened?’ Richard asked.
‘Something huge ate the perch. Must have been …’
Greg nodded. ‘Must have been, mustn’t it?’
The two boys couldn’t get the vision of that great swirl out of their minds. They talked about it for the rest of the day and agreed that they just had to try to catch that fish.
Having read another article on pike fishing, Richard went into town on the Friday and took his pocket money into the tackle shop while his mother was buying groceries next door. He came out with a wire trace and two treble hooks, and a recommendation

If the strength of tackle doesn’t match the size of fish being played, you need patience andguileto have any chance of landing it. Michael Smith and his team showed both in spades, during surely one of the most remarkable fights with any freshwater fish.
ew anglers are better qualified to handle a large salmon than Michael Smith. He had already caught a fish of more than
43 pounds, on the Dalguise beat on Scotland’s River Tay, so he not only had the experience of landing that fish, but many others of more than 20 pounds and a sprinkling of 30s.
Michael

‘What about reeling in his line and tying a bloody great rock to it?’
‘Then what? You can’t cast a rock back out to sea, can you?’
‘True. Hey, I know.’ Terry started rummaging around in his tackle box. ‘I’ve got a perk in here somewhere. I bought it for that boat trip last month and never used it. There you go.’ He pulled out a long, silver-coloured and vaguely fish-shaped metal tube, with a swivel at one end and a large treble hook at the other. ‘How heavy is it?’ asked Frank. ‘About a pound, I should think.’ ‘Will his rod be able to cast it?
‘Yeah, if

BANANAS, COCA-COLA AND TARPON
Fizzy drinks and fruit seem a strange recipe for catching one of the world’s hardest fighting, most acrobatic fish – but they worked their magic for one fortunate fisherman.
y the time Colin reached his 50th birthday, he was a wellrespected member of Wiltshire’s Salisbury fishing society in the
UK. Working in a tackle dealer’s shop in the city centre, and a well-known angler around Wiltshire and Hampshire coarse and trout fisheries, he reached his half-century as a highly popular, jovial soul who knew as much as most about

A heavy weight sank into David’s guts. ‘A ghost? Whose flipping ghost?’
‘If it’s who I think it was, he was a guy called Herbert Tattershall, who used to fish this beat for sea trout years ago.’
David stared at him. ‘So how did he die?’
‘He drowned. It had been raining up in the headwaters, apparently, but not down this far, so the theory was that the river came up without him really noticing it in the dark. When he stepped off the bank into the neck of the Meadow to start fishing, he was swept away. He was nearly 70, so he just wasn’t strong enough to

Once loaded up, Herr Schmidt once again sat in the bows like some great Norse chieftain, the peat bag and content safely stowed under his seat. Patrick manoeuvred the boat slowly away from the island, but the more he increased the throttle and the bows lifted up, the more the peat bag slid astern. Once past the toe of the island, he opened up the outboard full tilt and the bag slid serenely towards him and came to rest against a deck board, quietly tipping over to one side.
He suddenly saw his chance and, while Herr Schmidt looked ashore, firmly clutching the

With Coke drunk and banana swallowed, Colin sat in the stern seat as Captain Steve opened up the engines and headed up Big Pine Key for Bahia Honda bridge. Colin waited for his stomach to reject the concoction, together with last night’s beer, but the further they motored, the better he felt. In fact, by the time they were in the shadow of the bridge, he had to admit that he’d never felt better on a boat before. Not that that would be difficult, but his guts were quite settled now and even his head was losing its sense of panic. As the boat was positioned to sta

‘Yes, I was afraid you’d say that.’
‘Are you alright?’ David asked, as the man’s face had gone pale. ‘Look, what’s all this about?’
The keeper shrugged and sat down. ‘Um… there’s no easy way to say this. I think you probably saw a ghost on the river last night.’
A heavy weight sank into David’s guts. ‘A ghost? Whose flipping ghost?’
‘If it’s who I think it was, he was a guy called Herbert Tattershall, who used to fish this beat for sea trout years ago.’
David stared at him. ‘So how did he die?’

‘Be ready to cast out your bait,’ said Gagan, ‘right into the middle of the fish. One of them will most definitely take the sheep meat.’
In went the charred timber and what was left of the sheep, the pungent smell of burnt mutton pervading the air. Mark waited, poised for the action to start.
Nothing happened! The wood floated away on the current and the rest of the debris sank out of sight, but not a single fish showed on the surface. Gagan stared into the water. He was speechless and was muttering something under his breath. It seemed to Mark as though h
