Himalayas and Africa. There are brown trout, Atlantic and Pacific salmon, sea trout, eels, pike, mahseer, tiger fish, black marlin, tuna, bonefish, permit, tarpon and many other species. Some are tales of extraordinary events happening to ordinary people seeking nothing more than a few hours of solitude with a fishing rod. Others involve great characters and big personalities, to whom standout happenings are probably commonplace. They all embrace one central facet, though: a love of fish and fishing, and the truly wonderful places across the globe to which the s

The ghillie looked serious. ‘Let’s just say I think you’ve seen something unearthly.’
The story has no definite ending, because no one has ever dared go close enough to the standing stones to find out what goes on there after dark. The locals swear it has nothing to do with the living and, anyway, Peter says that it was not so much the visual aspect of the incident, but the intense menace of the atmosphere out on the loch that scared him the most. He was convinced that no living person could ever have conjured that up.
And so, whether the torch carriers we

Back at the camp, showered and cleanly clothed, we assembled at the bar for pre-dinner drinks and there was the tiger fish, baked and the skin taken off. Instead of eating nuts or olives, we used our fingers, African style, to pick up chunks of tiger fish from between the bones. It tasted so good in that atmosphere, with the barbeque and wood-smoke smells on the air.
They say that Africa gets into your blood and that you feel compelled to return. I will do one day, and I’ll take a modern travel rod with some more backbone, because I want a chance again at a t

However, she didn’t let that get in the way of the excitement of feeling a King salmon on the line for the first time in her life, boring deep astern of the boat and pumping the heavy rod with astonishing power. She was living her dream and it was proving every bit as exhilarating as she had thought it would be.
‘Er… I don’t think it’s a grilse,’ she suggested to the boatman, who continued to hover too closely, as though this old woman might fall to pieces at any moment and need rescuing from the fight. ‘By the way, I’m perfectly alright. There’s no need to

Mark inspected the pike’s head and there were two distinct marks where he had hit it. However, from his ecological training and knowledge of fish skeletal structure, he knew how hard a pike’s skull was. He also knew that pike, like eels and even carp, can survive a long time out of water, provided that their skin doesn’t dry out too much. Maybe, just maybe, this fish might have survived its experience.
He collected a keep net from the shed, placed the pike inside and put both carefully into his garden pond, making sure the netting was loose enough to allow ma

‘It’s a fish!’ cried Steve, ‘and not the one I hooked first time round. Would a big trevally take a smaller fish?’
The boatman looked doubtful and apprehensive at the same time. ‘Not unless it’s the biggest one I’ve ever seen. That’s some fish you’re playing there.’
Steve let it run for a while, occasionally winning line back and losing it again just as quickly. The tackle wasn’t really up to the job, but he was patient, and slowly he began to gain control. Even so, it was probably an hour or more before they saw the first glimpse of the fish appearing bel

‘Man, watching you English fishing sure is entertainment!’ hooted
Two down and only the easiest of the trio, a bonefish, to catch. Confidence was high enough for them to enjoy a leisurely lunch, then back to the flats for the afternoon. However, the bonefish weren’t coming to the table of this particular slam, not helped by the tide, which had dropped back, making the water on the flats very skinny and the fish almost impossible to approach close enough for a cast.
So the day closed in the bar after dinner, with John tending the line burns on his legs and

Nothing stirred in the first hour and they decided to try some roach fishing again, although their concentration kept switching from floats back to the big reel, which had been left with its ratchet off so that line could easily be pulled off.
‘The reel moved!’ Richard shouted.
‘Yeah, I definitely saw it. There, it went again!’
Greg threw down his roach rod and picked up the thick fibreglass sea poker.
‘Remember what the man in the shop told me,’ said Richard. ‘Let it run with the bait until it stops.’
Greg nodded, his eyes glued to the tip of the

poking out from a rock, and it was a quick dash into the house to pick up his bamboo cane and return to tempt it from its lair with a worm or piece of meat. We tend to forget in today’s world of commercialism and modern fishing tackle that, back in the 1930s and 1940s, times were hard and Bill recalls a Mr Rowe, who owned a shop in Barnstaple High Street, selling bamboo canes with eyes crudely whipped on for sixpence.
Bill’s passion for the river inevitably rubbed off on John and, when he was old enough, they would fish together for salmon, sea trout and trou

‘Nah, that’s a doctor job,’ said the skipper. ‘It’s time we went home anyway.’
The skipper opened up the boat’s two powerful diesel engines, leaving the crewmen to deal with the catch. Rope nooses were tied round the tail wrist of all three fish, which were hauled over and tied to the transom in a neat line. As they headed back to the now distant shore, nursing a very welcome cold beer, it was rather poignant to see the once vivid colours on the sailfishes’ dorsal fins gradually fade into dullness.
As they neared land, the crewman hoisted flags up to the m

Andrew shone the torch over the fence and two cows stared back at him, their eyes shining bright in the torch beam. What had happened was that Chris had decided to have a quick nap before taking on the leviathan fish, forgetting that there were cows in the field and that cows are highly inquisitive animals. He had been woken by one of them literally breathing down his neck from above. The scream and moans had been his, while the galloping hooves belonged not so much to Henry’s ghoulish riders as to the startled cow fleeing in terror from the howling human.
Ne

So the plot was hatched and Chris agreed to accompany Andrew on the quest. They went down to the lower river in the morning, when the tide was just flooding, and did a thorough recce. There were a number of small sea trout shoals lying against the far bank, some with large fish among them, although not the sort of size they had been told to expect. Then, just as the tide was stirring up the silt, they saw half a dozen fish lying close together in the shade of a line of bushes.
‘Jeeesuus!’ Chris whispered. ‘The smallest one must be 8 pounds!’ ‘What about that

‘I saw it. I don’t believe it either, but I saw it. The bugger’s hooked up to Helen’s Para Dun but he’s still feeding on bloody beetles! Insane!’
George recovered his senses enough to pull in the anchor, and Brett navigated the boat around sunken tree trunks while Helen regained line. After several minutes manoeuvring, the line came free and Helen quickly regained contact with the fish, which, as though rejuvenated by the fresh intake of food, shot off on yet another energetic run and jumped clear of the water.
Helen kept it away from the trunks and finall

WORLD RECORD IN A ROWING BOAT
Catching huge sea fish from big motorboats, with powerful engines to help with the fight, is one thing, but how about taking on a marine leviathan from an open skiff with nothing more than a set of oars for propulsion?

Barry’s instinct told him that he had more chance of success if he abandoned the direct, internal route and went instead for an exterior strategy. He opened the bathroom window and carefully plotted a suitable course, taking into account that the gravitational force on a 60-pound conger eel could very easily create havoc below if everything went pear shaped. He picked up the fish and, with extreme care, slipped it out through the window.
The eel’s progress was slowed slightly by sliding it down the roof tiles of the kitchen extension until it reached the slop

Then the most remarkable thing happened. No more than 20 yards in front of us, the otter came up just like a seal, bobbing in the water and looking straight at us, as though it had never seen humans before and it was fascinated by what we were doing there.

The fish moved again, but this time it was a much steadier, more measured run. It came left, the line sliding across the top of the water, slicing through the surface like a cheese cutter and shooting spray into the air. It kept coming and Michael started to wade downstream to recover some line, because the fish was threatening to go beyond the dogleg and that could cause all sorts of problems. He couldn’t believe he was having so much trouble from a 5- or 6-pound grilse.
He wasn’t able to wade fast enough to keep up with what was happening, so his line was g

The otter kept watching us, although we never seemed to get any closer, despite the fact we were drifting. He must have been backpedalling to keep his distance while he studied these strange people invading his watery habitat, and then, like the earlier encounter, he simply slipped below the surface and was gone.
‘I’m going to enjoy hearing you describe this one in the bar tonight,’ I told Geordie. ‘It

‘Can you hand me the rod and take over on the rope?’ he enquired cautiously.
The boatman eyed the shark suspiciously, thought about this for a few moments but then slowly handed the rod to Steve, who for a second or two was left holding the rope in one hand and the rod in the other. Fortunately, the shark didn’t realise that its chance for freedom had momentarily arrived, and it kept reasonably quiet while the boatman moved behind Steve and gingerly took the rope off him.
Steve moved up to the head of the fish and wondered how he was ever goingtoremovethet

‘For God’s sake, sir, let this one run, it’s bloody…’
‘Yes, I can see what size it is for myself, thank you, Murdo.’
Murdo shut up and watched in awe as the fish bored deep, ran first upstream, then down towards the tail of the pool, and then leapt, not AMAZING FISHING STORIES
completely clear of the water, but far enough to get a good idea of the size.
‘Jeeesuuus!’ muttered Murdo under his breath. ‘That’s 40 pounds of salmon if ever I saw it.’
‘A bit coloured, isn’t it?’

‘Are you alright?’ David asked, as the man’s face had gone pale. ‘Look, what’s all this about?’
The keeper shrugged and sat down. ‘Um… there’s no easy way to say this. I think you probably saw a ghost on the river last night.’
A heavy weight sank into David’s guts. ‘A ghost? Whose flipping ghost?’
‘If it’s who I think it was, he was a guy called Herbert Tattershall, who used to fish this beat for sea trout years ago.’
David stared at him. ‘So how did he die?’
‘He drowned. It had been raining up in the headwaters, apparently, but not down this fa

At this point John, who had been watching the battle from the beach, waded up to congratulate his friend on his debut permit.
‘Great stuff! By the way, you can stop smiling inanely whenever you like.’
They photographed the fish and quickly returned it to the water, where it sped away towards the edge of the flats.
Jose was now in his element. ‘Hey, John, there were two more permit back there just now. Get your arse in gear, man, and let’s have another.’
The fish were still feeding and John, with several permit under his belt in the past few years, wa

Vyrnwy trout had weighed just over a pound last year, but this was bigger, three times the size. He had caught a brown trout of at least 3 pounds, and he had done it all by himself. He just couldn’t believe this was happening.
He placed the fish prominently on a flat-topped rock and then ran towards the head of the loch. A couple of curlew flew up in alarm, and Victor had a vague sight of something much larger soaring away to his right, but he was far too eager to tell his story to worry about the local wildlife for the moment. He came to the crag and stood o

‘I didn’t see anything,’ said Ron.
‘Definitely!’ said Frank. ‘Just a tap, tap on the tip.’
‘I’d better take a look then.’
Ron picked up the beachcaster, struck solidly at whatever was out there and began to reel in. ‘Yeah, you’re right!’ ‘Any size?’ asked Terry, trying not to laugh.
‘Dunno yet. Reasonable flattie, I’d say.’
‘Bet it’s not as big as my turbot,’ muttered Frank.

Bertie was fishing one day with his father, out near the middle of the lake. He had caught a couple of perch on his spinner, not much bigger than the ones he had lured with worms, but now his father had hooked into something much bigger, and a pike suddenly broke through the calmness of the lake’s surface. His father managed to control the fish and bring it close in to the boat, whereupon he put the big landing net over the side with one hand while he tried to coax the pike over it with his other. However, the sight of the net spooked the pike and it made a last

Amazingly, despite all this commotion, the tarpon was still peacefully minding its own business as John and Jose waded right up to the edge of the mangroves, just a few feet to one side of the fish. John, with his head poked through a gap in the canopy to see what was going on, watched as Jose, taking the fly and a few feet of line in his hand, pushed further into the branches and, like some cowboy attempting to lasso a steer, twirled the fly around before flicking it in front of the tarpon. One tweak was all it took to get the fly engulfed in a huge mouth and J

In went the charred timber and what was left of the sheep, the pungent smell of burnt mutton pervading the air. Mark waited, poised for the action to start.
Nothing happened! The wood floated away on the current and the rest of the debris sank out of sight, but not a single fish showed on the surface. Gagan stared into the water. He was speechless and was muttering something under his breath. It seemed to Mark as though he was meditating or deep in prayer. He stayed that way for a couple of minutes, then suddenly came out of his trance.
‘This is very enlig
