And then the shark appeared out of the depths, visible from some way down in the clear water.
‘Jeeesuuus!’ Ray muttered. ‘It’s even bigger than I thought. We’re just not geared up for this size of fish, Rick.’
The shark came up and lay alongside the boat. ‘Okay, guys, let’s play sailors!’ Ray shouted. ‘Plan of action: I’m going to try to dig this hook into its tail and get it out of the water. That way it can’t run any more. We’ll try to tow it in after that, because there’s no way that fish is coming aboard my boat!’

‘Can’t help it,’ Colin spluttered. ‘I hate boats! Can’t I fish from the shore?’

‘No way,’ said Peter. ‘You haven’t come all this way just to fish from the bank. The captain says the tarpon are out in the middle, so that’s where we’re going.’

Right on cue, the rod started jerking and the line came off the multiplier against the drag as though the Penn Reel company had forgotten to include a braking system in that particular model. The power being exerted was enormous and I wondered, as I’m sure everyone else did, whether the line could possibly stand up to that sort of pressure for long.
