‘Might be,’ said one of the crew. ‘Big fish, anyway.’
Peter fought a battle of attrition with the fish for more than half an hour, gaining line painfully slowly against what was, for the most part, a dead weight on the other end. At times it was like playing a log of wood, except that the occasional head shake and short, dogged run proved that he was hooked up to something animate.
The wire trace finally emerged from the water and a long, grey-brown shape slowly materialised from the depths.
‘Shark, shark!’ a crewman shouted at the skipper, and they all

‘Come on, man, wake up! Tie me on another size 10 treble and let’s get some more grilse on the bank. And don’t leave it too late to catch that train.’
Murdo found an excuse in the afternoon to go and make sure the other guests and their ghillies were happy. Really, he just wanted to be out of the major’s sight. He still felt numb.
Half an hour later, he returned to where the major should have been, but he wasn’t. Perhaps he had hooked that mighty fish again, which had made him late coming down to the lower pool. Murdo walked up the bank, past the shallow r

The river cried out classic steelhead habitat, with glides, runs, riffles, islands, pools, shallow weed beds and numerous large rocks providing perfect lies for fish. The water was shallow, but with small boulders strewn around the bottom and the fast flow, wading too far out became dangerous. Peter started fishing in runs between the weeds, catching stunningly beautiful sea-run Arctic char up to five pounds, decked out in their spawning colours: dark greens, reds, orange, white, black and silver. Then the first coho salmon came to hand, a fresh-run, silver fish

‘Shoot him, Pete,’ said Steve quietly.
Peter waited a fraction longer, then fired at 10 yards’ range. The cracker shell hit the bear slap on the nose, bounced off as intended, fell into the grass and exploded like a Thunderflash. The bear skidded to a halt, spun round a hundred and eighty degrees and galloped out of the camp as fast as his legs would carry him.
KODIAK BEARS AND STEELHEAD
“Hell,” said Steve. “That bear must have been doin’ thirty miles an hour on the way in.” Peter laughed nervously, loading another cracker shell into the breach. “Yeah,

‘Spinner,’ the skipper identified the shark from the wheelhouse door. ‘Nice fish. I reckon 150. Good catch.’
One of the crewman plucked up the courage to go forward and extract the hook from the shark’s mouth. He was obviously no fan of sharks and looked genuinely scared of this one, despite the number of times it had been smacked over the head. Now, though, just at the critical moment when the hook was about to come loose, the fish gave an energetically nervous shake of its head. The hook, under tension from the line being held tightly, flew out and lodged f

Victor kept tripping over himself in his panic to get ashore, but then dropped to his knees beside the fish and killed it with the stone. He couldn’t believe the size of it: it was absolutely massive. One of the Lake AMAZING FISHING STORIES
Vyrnwy trout had weighed just over a pound last year, but this was bigger, three times the size. He had caught a brown trout of at least 3 pounds, and he had done it all by himself. He just couldn’t believe this was happening.
He placed the fish prominently on a flat-topped rock and then ran towards the head of the loch

When the pictures were developed they were classics: Mark with his wild professor’s hair and the goonch all piggy eyed, bizarrely whiskered and menacing. But Mark couldn’t quite fix the man-eater tag to his ugly protagonist. While it would never displace mahseer as the Indian fisheries jewel, he couldn’t help having a sneaking admiration for the misunderstood monster.
ARCTIC SALMON AND ICEBERGS
An iceberg was responsible for the most famous maritime disaster of all time, but you wouldn’t normally expect one to play a major role in a salmon-fishing trip, ev

Gagan produced a large lump of mutton, which Mark impaled on the hook. They then waited for the fire to do its work, until it was time to kick the remnants into the river, just as had happened yesterday.
‘Be ready to cast out your bait,’ said Gagan, ‘right into the middle of the fish. One of them will most definitely take the sheep meat.’
In went the charred timber and what was left of the sheep, the pungent smell of burnt mutton pervading the air. Mark waited, poised for the action to start.
Nothing happened! The wood floated away on the current and th

The first thing George noticed was that Peter’s local forecast had turned out to be accurate: the wind had, indeed, swung from a cold easterly into the warmer south. Even so, the surrounding hills funnel the wind down the Delphi and swirl it round Finlough, making boat handling and casting very difficult in stormy weather. Peter was a past master at holding the boat’s drift, but George’s first cast was intercepted by a sudden cross-wind and collapsed in a spaghetti heap a few yards in front of him. He muttered under his breath a heartfelt what the hell are we do

At that time of year, the sun went down quickly and it was quite dark by 6 o’clock. Having landed a goonch at 4.30, Steve was happy to pack away his gear and return to camp for one more night under the stars before the long journey home. However, Seban and Bola suggested one more move downstream and a final cast into a pool they hadn’t fished in before, at the head of a series of shallow rapids.
The sun was already low behind the hills and the light was beginning to fade. Steve had just suggested five more minutes when the clutch on his Shimano Calcutta reel

Mark climbed out of the fighting chair and took hold of the marlin’s bill, which enabled Don to use both hands to work the hook free.
‘No problem, I take pictures,’ said a heavily accented voice from behind. Mark looked back over his shoulder to see a grinning Japanese taking photographs.
‘Okay, that’s enough,’ Don said. ‘Let her go back now.’
The fish stayed beside the boat looking at them for a few moments, then sank down, twisted away and disappeared.
The Japanese shook Mark’s hand vigorously. ‘Very good. We catch huge fish, yes?’
Mark made all

‘That’s one hell of a fish, too,’ said Steve. ‘Biggest tarpon I’ve ever seen, on this or any other boat out of the Keys.’
Colin had dropped the rod and was leaning on the boat, muscles screaming with exhaustion but with an unbelievable feeling of achievement in his head. Adrenalin was coursing round his veins faster than he had never experienced before, and he couldn’t speak for the moment. He was just staring down at the monstrous tarpon in front of him.
Peter held the end of the tape against the fish’s tail, while Steve measured up the lateral line to it

‘Vot? Zere must be, Patrick. Vot has happened to my eels?’
‘I really don’t know, Mister Schmidt. I tell you what, I’ll have a look under the deck boards. There might be something down there.’
A couple of the other ghillies came aboard and helped him, while Herr Schmidt looked on with increased bewilderment as it became obvious that the search would prove fruitless.
‘But vere have my eels gone?’ Herr Schmidt bleated, utterly bereft at this turn of events. His wife didn’t look too impressed either.
Patrick stood up, removed his cap and scratched his he

He used the rope to get back down to the water and watched as the tiger righted itself, hung around for a while and then slipped back into the murky waters of the Zambezi. But by the look on Thomas’s face, catch and release was not a philosophy that came naturally to a Zimbabwean used to catching what he could for his family to eat and stay alive.
Tom went back to camp, where his hopes of a fishing hero’s welcome were quickly dashed. Julie was less than enamoured at having had to pitch camp and cook supper, added to which she was in the tent trying desperatel

They were deep in tundra country. Behind them were shallow, glacial valleys covered with thin brush and willow scrub in their autumnal orange and ochre colours, and on the higher ground was a line of red and brown berry bushes, which in turn gave way to bare grey rock, the lava remains of extinct volcanoes.
It was immediately evident that bears were around, because it was obvious where they had beaten down corridors through the tall reeds that lined the riverbank. Food supplies were therefore stored well away from camp, safely concealed in bear-proof barrels.

‘Er… a bar in Florida, probably.’
‘That’s right,’ said Peter. ‘We’re going to the Keys, you, me and him.
You’re joining our annual fishing party.’
‘Richard’s organised the shop rota, and Hannah’s made sure your passport’s ready and you’ve got the right clothes to take. We’ve thought of everything.’
A British Airways Atlantic flight later, they were ensconced in a fabulous Key-side bungalow with the rest of Peter’s party, all Americans. There was beer and food in the fridge, and information about the fishing they would be doing in the morning. Only

‘Quite understood, Major Jackson,’ said Murdo patiently. He met all kinds on the riverbank, but this one was beginning to take the biscuit. He could quite cheerfully lure him into a deep hole and let him drown; he had a fleeting image of the major’s head sinking into the peaty water, that pompous little moustache twitching wildly in panic as he disappeared. He grinned to himself at that, but then they were at the head of the pool and he was preparing the major’s rod for the first cast.
‘The best lie is just over…’
‘I know how to fish, Murdo. No need to f

The Severn provided the inspiration for another of his passions, rowing, which his school practised at Tewkesbury. With an important regatta taking place the following day, Ben and fellow students went down to the river to set up the course, including anchoring the stake boats below the weir. With rowing very much on his mind, he wasn’t, for once, thinking about fish as he walked back to school, and he spent the rest of the evening preparing himself mentally for the next day’s sport, in which he was expected to excel.
After breakfast, he went back down to the

Alas, the hook didn’t hold for long and just pulled free, almost certainly, the ghillie told him later, because it was a tired fish that only took the big tube fly half-heartedly in the first place. That was often the way with running spring fish that had to battle their way through rough water between pools. They would take the fly if it crossed in front of their noses, but you had to be lucky to keep them on for long.
Slightly chastened by the experience, Ben walked downstream to find Richard sitting forlornly on a rock beside one of the lower pools.
‘I’

‘Mahseer!’ whispered Bola in a hushed, reverential tone, proving that he was every bit as awestruck by the sight as Steve himself was. ‘Now, that is a great, great fish!’
The mahseer seemed perfectly happy to be handled now, as first Bola and then Saban supported its enormous frame while they secured the recovery cord through its gills and took photographs from all angles. The fish remained calm through all this, as though it knew it was playing its part in something much more intense than merely an angling feat, and that it wouldn’t be harmed in any way.

Ever so slowly, Colin managed to regain line and keep it on the spool. The tarpon began to wallow on the surface now rather than jump, its tail thrashing water but not propelling it any more. Colin put more effort into pumping the rod, although whether he was pulling the fish to the boat or the boat to the fish, he wasn’t sure. Whichever, the tarpon finally lay alongside, which enabled Peter and Steve to grapple hold of the fish and haul it onto the flat deck in the bows of the dory. Even so, with its body right across the boat’s beam, its tail still reached int

Jock’s fish shows one of the problems of trying to land large fish on smallish rivers. To have a serious chance of beaching, say, a 50-pounder, one really needs the river space for the fish to take off on long runs and so tire itself out. On a river like the Brora, with comparatively small pools, they could spend all day swimming round and round and never get sufficiently tired for the angler to gain enough control to net or beach them. Even so, several anglers came tantalisingly close in the years between 1970 and the early 2000s.
In about 1970, the local po

mackerel, targeting blue sharks, but Rick had other ideas and had kept some of the pollack he had caught in St Mawes harbour the day before while waiting for the weather to ease. He baited with two fish of about 2 pounds each and let his balloon float a little way further from the boat than the others.
Three small blue sharks came aboard in fairly quick succession and were released, but then everything went quiet for a while. Ray minced up some mackerel as rubby dubby to create an oily slick and attract in the sharks, but they seemed to have disappeared. Even

‘If I was you, sir, I would fish down the bottom end, there now. The water is deeper and probably better for eels.’
‘Are you not staying with me a little?’
‘I’m paid to go salmon fishing, Mister Schmidt, sir; that’s my job. So I will see you at lunchtime.’
With that, he pushed the boat off the beach, jumped in and headed for his first drift of the day, praying that he would catch a salmon.
The morning wore on and not a sniff of either salmon or sea trout on the toby. Just before lunch, he tried a drift down towards the island, casting his favourite O

The fight had lasted almost exactly an hour and the recovery period took another 30 minutes. Steve was cradling the fish, up to his chest in water, as the cord was removed. The mahseer rolled over, its eyes momentarily staring into Steve’s one last time, before it slowly sank away into the reflected moonlight and disappeared.
AMAZING FISHING STORIES
Back at the campsite, the post mortem took place. Saban and Bola had measured the fish at 6 feet, 7 inches, nose to fork of tail, with a girth of 48 inches.

The fish were still feeding and John, with several permit under his belt in the past few years, was quickly into one on a shrimp fly. The fight lasted 20 minutes, going much the same way as Robin’s, except that Jose’s part in proceedings was a bit more impressive this time. Having failed a couple of times to tail the circling fish, he threw dignity to the winds and dived full length on the fish, completely disappearing
