Next, Martin took Natalie away for a romantic week at a remote rainforest retreat, Bloomfield Lodge. Situated close to the mouth of the Bloomfield River at the southern end of the stunning Weary Bay, Bloomfield Lodge is a four-hour, rough-road drive from the word’s marlin fishing capital of Cairns in Queensland, on the north east coast. The sheer beauty and isolation of the region, sandwiched between the two World Heritage sites of the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, make the place very special. The oceans alongside the coral sea and the reef are

‘I’ve lived on this loch all my life,’ said an octogenarian Orcadian from his favourite chair by the window overlooking the water, ‘and I’ve never seen an otter. They’re there, I have no doubt, but you never see them, especially in broad daylight.’
He was supported by everyone else, including the Merkister’s proprietor from behind the bar, who professed that he had been at the hotel for donkeys’ years and had never set eyes on an otter either. And so we endured the good-natured banter and suggestions that the sloe gin must have been liberally passed round the

As the line came round in front of the tree there was a slight tug, but Tom couldn’t decide whether it was a fish or one of the submerged branches. He cast again in the same place and let the line come round, whereupon there was another tentative nibble, then the line went solid. He struck and everything went manic, as the tiger fish, much bigger than anything he had encountered thus far, came out of the water and showed all the splendour of its striped flanks, and even its outlandish teeth. It went straight out towards the middle of the current and turned downs

‘Er… a bar in Florida, probably.’
‘That’s right,’ said Peter. ‘We’re going to the Keys, you, me and him.
You’re joining our annual fishing party.’
‘Richard’s organised the shop rota, and Hannah’s made sure your passport’s ready and you’ve got the right clothes to take. We’ve thought of everything.’
A British Airways Atlantic flight later, they were ensconced in a fabulous Key-side bungalow with the rest of Peter’s party, all Americans. There was beer and food in the fridge, and information about the fishing they would be doing in the morning. Only

‘Quite understood, Major Jackson,’ said Murdo patiently. He met all kinds on the riverbank, but this one was beginning to take the biscuit. He could quite cheerfully lure him into a deep hole and let him drown; he had a fleeting image of the major’s head sinking into the peaty water, that pompous little moustache twitching wildly in panic as he disappeared. He grinned to himself at that, but then they were at the head of the pool and he was preparing the major’s rod for the first cast.
‘The best lie is just over…’
‘I know how to fish, Murdo. No need to f

The Severn provided the inspiration for another of his passions, rowing, which his school practised at Tewkesbury. With an important regatta taking place the following day, Ben and fellow students went down to the river to set up the course, including anchoring the stake boats below the weir. With rowing very much on his mind, he wasn’t, for once, thinking about fish as he walked back to school, and he spent the rest of the evening preparing himself mentally for the next day’s sport, in which he was expected to excel.
After breakfast, he went back down to the

‘Vot? Zere must be, Patrick. Vot has happened to my eels?’
‘I really don’t know, Mister Schmidt. I tell you what, I’ll have a look under the deck boards. There might be something down there.’
A couple of the other ghillies came aboard and helped him, while Herr Schmidt looked on with increased bewilderment as it became obvious that the search would prove fruitless.
‘But vere have my eels gone?’ Herr Schmidt bleated, utterly bereft at this turn of events. His wife didn’t look too impressed either.

He used the rope to get back down to the water and watched as the tiger righted itself, hung around for a while and then slipped back into the murky waters of the Zambezi. But by the look on Thomas’s face, catch and release was not a philosophy that came naturally to a Zimbabwean used to catching what he could for his family to eat and stay alive.
Tom went back to camp, where his hopes of a fishing hero’s welcome were quickly dashed. Julie was less than enamoured at having had to pitch camp and cook supper, added to which she was in the tent trying desperatel

They were deep in tundra country. Behind them were shallow, glacial valleys covered with thin brush and willow scrub in their autumnal orange and ochre colours, and on the higher ground was a line of red and brown berry bushes, which in turn gave way to bare grey rock, the lava remains of extinct volcanoes.
It was immediately evident that bears were around, because it was obvious where they had beaten down corridors through the tall reeds that lined the riverbank. Food supplies were therefore stored well away from camp, safely concealed in bear-proof barrels.

Alas, the hook didn’t hold for long and just pulled free, almost certainly, the ghillie told him later, because it was a tired fish that only took the big tube fly half-heartedly in the first place. That was often the way with running spring fish that had to battle their way through rough water between pools. They would take the fly if it crossed in front of their noses, but you had to be lucky to keep them on for long.
Slightly chastened by the experience, Ben walked downstream to find Richard sitting forlornly on a rock beside one of the lower pools.
‘I’

‘Mahseer!’ whispered Bola in a hushed, reverential tone, proving that he was every bit as awestruck by the sight as Steve himself was. ‘Now, that is a great, great fish!’
The mahseer seemed perfectly happy to be handled now, as first Bola and then Saban supported its enormous frame while they secured the recovery cord through its gills and took photographs from all angles. The fish remained calm through all this, as though it knew it was playing its part in something much more intense than merely an angling feat, and that it wouldn’t be harmed in any way.

Ever so slowly, Colin managed to regain line and keep it on the spool. The tarpon began to wallow on the surface now rather than jump, its tail thrashing water but not propelling it any more. Colin put more effort into pumping the rod, although whether he was pulling the fish to the boat or the boat to the fish, he wasn’t sure. Whichever, the tarpon finally lay alongside, which enabled Peter and Steve to grapple hold of the fish and haul it onto the flat deck in the bows of the dory. Even so, with its body right across the boat’s beam, its tail still reached int

Jock’s fish shows one of the problems of trying to land large fish on smallish rivers. To have a serious chance of beaching, say, a 50-pounder, one really needs the river space for the fish to take off on long runs and so tire itself out. On a river like the Brora, with comparatively small pools, they could spend all day swimming round and round and never get sufficiently tired for the angler to gain enough control to net or beach them. Even so, several anglers came tantalisingly close in the years between 1970 and the early 2000s.
In about 1970, the local po

mackerel, targeting blue sharks, but Rick had other ideas and had kept some of the pollack he had caught in St Mawes harbour the day before while waiting for the weather to ease. He baited with two fish of about 2 pounds each and let his balloon float a little way further from the boat than the others.
Three small blue sharks came aboard in fairly quick succession and were released, but then everything went quiet for a while. Ray minced up some mackerel as rubby dubby to create an oily slick and attract in the sharks, but they seemed to have disappeared. Even

‘If I was you, sir, I would fish down the bottom end, there now. The water is deeper and probably better for eels.’
‘Are you not staying with me a little?’
‘I’m paid to go salmon fishing, Mister Schmidt, sir; that’s my job. So I will see you at lunchtime.’
With that, he pushed the boat off the beach, jumped in and headed for his first drift of the day, praying that he would catch a salmon.
The morning wore on and not a sniff of either salmon or sea trout on the toby. Just before lunch, he tried a drift down towards the island, casting his favourite O

The fight had lasted almost exactly an hour and the recovery period took another 30 minutes. Steve was cradling the fish, up to his chest in water, as the cord was removed. The mahseer rolled over, its eyes momentarily staring into Steve’s one last time, before it slowly sank away into the reflected moonlight and disappeared.

After breakfast, he went back down to the river to make sure that everything was still all right and that the boats had not been tampered with or, worse still, vandalised. He rowed out to the first stake boat, where all was well, then moved to the second. Nothing was wrong with the boat and the vandals had stayed mercifully clear, but lying in the bottom, on the deck boards, was a magnificent 10-pound salmon, stone dead but still with enough of a silver sheen to show that it had not been in the river long from the sea. It sees a boat as competition to chase off; or more likely with you, to bite in half, because your canoe is just the right colour. But don’t

All except one. He kept a straight face until his friends had quietened down. ‘Actually, I hooked something down here last week that I couldn’t move. Never felt anything like it before in my life.’
‘Rubbish, of course you didn’t. You just hooked the pier again, like you’re always doing.’
‘It moved,’ the straight-faced one said. ‘If it was the pier, it was bloody well travelling at the time.’
‘Too much beer the night before, if you ask me,’ said another, and the

As a postscript, Duncan lost another massive tuna, visibly bigger than his record fish, after it towed the boat for 16 miles and he actually had it on the surface ready to gaff. Then, freakishly, the swivel at the top of the trace touched the boat’s gunwale and sprang the quick-release locking mechanism, and the fish was gone.
However, his record stood for a further 20 years, when it was beaten by just a few pounds. And then, in 1979, a colossal fish was taken off the coast of Nova Scotia that weighed a smidgeon under 1500 pounds. That would have seemed an im

‘Bloody hell, it must go 30 pounds. And look, the hook’s fallen out. That’s lucky.’
Simon slapped him on the shoulder. ‘You don’t know the half of it!’
It transpired that Simon had been hanging onto the bush with one hand while making a desperate netting lunge with the other. The fish had moved its head at the wrong moment and the net had actually knocked the fly out of its jaws, whereupon the treble hook had become caught in the net as the freed fish disappeared from sight. So, for a good half minute, Hughie had been playing the net in Simon’s hands, not

‘Thanks, Thomas, that makes us feel much better,’ said Tom.
Thomas flashed his teeth in a grin. ‘Good, because if you end up in the water, that’s when the flat dogs get you!’ ‘Flat dogs?’ inquired Julie.
They made camp the first night on a low lying, grass-covered island, on which was the dead carcass of a big male hippo. Strangely, it didn’t smell too high, and Thomas was able to show Tom and Julie the animal’s incredible incisors, its main weapon, with razor edges that came together in one of the most destructive bites in the natural world. During the ni

Just before lunch, he tried a drift down towards the island, casting his favourite Olive Bumble on the bob and a Connemara black on the tail, but all he managed was a swirl from a small brownie, and even

Tom grinned sheepishly. ‘Oh, I wouldn’t think I’ll have time. But since you mentioned it, I’ll take a small rod, just in case.’
‘Yes, I just bet you will!’
So a short spinning rod, fixed-spool reel, wire traces and large spoons with single hooks were included on the equipment list.
They met their guide, Thomas, at Chirundu. ‘What is a hippo?’ he asked rhetorically, as he started his ritual safety talk about the river and its wildlife. ‘A hippo is 3000 kilos or 6500 pounds of pure muscle, all controlled by a brain the size of a ping-pong ball! It sees a

Needless to say, the monstrous sea trout remained uncaught. Hopefully its offspring still run the Beaulieu River to this day.
There has to be a good reason why ghillies won’t land on a beautiful island, and why sea trout don’t seem to take a fly in its vicinity.
och Maree, on Scotland’s west coast, was arguably once the finest still-water sea trout fishery in Europe. Hopefully it will be again, if some of the environmental problems that caused its demise can be reversed. But back in its heyday, people would make the annual pilgrimage up to the loch from al
