They were the toast of the Lodge, not to mention the film crew the following week. And the toast continues to this day, because the Western Rivers Lodge has never had a bigger brown trout landed, nor have the guides seen a better fish. And as for John, a cast of the brownie hangs above the fireplace in his Wiltshire home, a constant reminder of his greatest angling feat.
BANANAS, COCA-COLA AND TARPON
Fizzy drinks and fruit seem a strange recipe for catching one of the world’s hardest fighting, most acrobatic fish – but they worked their magic for one fortu

The fight was amazing. The tiger, stripes and all, came soaring out of the water, then ran all over the immediate Zambezi, leaping plenty and trying to dive under the boat when it came close enough. Just as quickly as the acrobatics had started, the fish gave up and was easy enough to draw to the net. As soon as it hit the bottom of the boat, the mepps fell out of its mouth.

After a good few hours, the ratchet on one of the massive multiplier reels suddenly started screaming. Mark engaged the clutch and struck into the fish, which went solid for a second or two then roared away, stripping line off the extremely expensive-looking multiplier’s spool against what he assumed was a state-of-the-art braking system. By the speed it was moving, the marlin obviously wasn’t very impressed.
‘Harness up, Mark!’ Don yelled, then ran onto deck and helped him into the fighting chair. ‘Sorry, mate, but you’re on your own with this one. I’ve got

A ridiculously long time seemed to pass before the fish slowed down, but it finally stopped and enabled Victor frantically to wind the little brass reel to retrieve some line. The trout came in quite easily to start with and Victor thought he had it beaten, but then it must have sensed the shallow water again and it took off on another long run. This went on for ages. Victor kept glancing across at the head of the loch, hoping to see his father coming over the crag so that he could help. Gradually, though, he sensed the runs getting weaker, and then he saw the f

It was immediately evident that bears were around, because it was obvious where they had beaten down corridors through the tall reeds that lined the riverbank. Food supplies were therefore stored well away from camp, safely concealed in bear-proof barrels.
The river cried out classic steelhead habitat, with glides, runs, riffles, islands, pools, shallow weed beds and numerous large rocks providing perfect lies for fish. The water was shallow, but with small boulders strewn around the bottom and the fast flow, wading too far out became dangerous. Peter started

Martin was just about to ask ‘What about now, in October?’ when his rod lunged over and a shell burst from the water, its silver flanks shimmering in the afternoon sunlight. It continued to spend most of its time in the air as it completed a couple of circuits of the boat, and a magnificent 32-inch fish, weighing well over 11 pounds, was netted into the boat. Once photographed, it was returned to the water to become one of the grandmothers of the future.
Over an ice-cold beer in the lodge, Benn reflected on the plight of the barramundi, about its commercial o

He wasn’t able to wade fast enough to keep up with what was happening, so his line was getting perilously close to the left-hand bank that formed the corner of the dogleg. That was far too shallow for a salmon; if the fish kept going it would be on the bank, for goodness’ sake!
It did keep going. Michael’s line reached the corner, came clear of the water and then started sliding up the bank, cutting through a thin layer of gravel as it went. The fish had to have been in the very shallowest of water beyond the dogleg, but it still kept coming.
Michael waded

Duncan lowered the tuna and forced open its cavernous mouth, whereupon Percy stuffed miniature boulders down its gullet. They estimated the weight of rock required to replace the blood loss, then added a few more for good measure.
The truck duly arrived and drove them round to St Ann’s Harbour, where they found a reliable set of scales that would provide an authentic weight for the record books. The fish was hauled up by the tail… whereupon the rocks promptly fell out from the mouth, to the hilarity of the assembled crowd.
Once Duncan had charmed his way

Back on the Lyn, Bill Slader would take a holiday every year and the family would stay on the banks of the river with John’s grandparents. One year, with perfect water conditions, John remembers Bill going out early every morning to Watersmeet Bridge Pool and, for 10 days on the trot, he brought a salmon home by 10 o’clock. Indeed, with the river’s small pools and the number of salmon and sea trout in them, it was often a problem trying to avoid foul hooking fish.

However, some of the locals were not quite so concerned abo

‘No,’ said Geordie, ‘your perspective’s all wrong. It was that otter again.’
Then the most remarkable thing happened. No more than 20 yards in front of us, the otter came up just like a seal, bobbing in the water and looking straight at us, as though it had never seen humans before and it was fascinated by what we were doing there.
‘It’s huge,’ I said. ‘No way is that the same animal we saw this morning.’
‘It’s a dog otter,’ Geordie agreed. ‘Definitely different from this morning.’
The otter kept watching us, although we never seemed to get any close

There are many ways of catching fish. Just occasionally, conventional methods go out of the window in order to bring the quarry to hand.
en Juckes fished from an early age, growing up, as he did, in the Gloucestershire countryside in the west of England. He cut his teeth as a young trout fisher on the River Monnow in the Welsh borders, a time from which he has two abiding memories. The first was waiting for a dry fly to drift back over a rising fish, only for a kingfisher to dart down the river and land on the very tip of his rod. It looked down into the wate

AMAZING FISHING STORIES
Robert brought the fish into the shallows, squatted down and held out the net. He drew in the sea trout and, just as he was about to slip the net under it, he suddenly saw its outline in the water as a burst of moonlight came through the cloud. It was enormous, much bigger than he had imagined. He couldn’t see it clearly, but it was considerably larger than the 6-pound grilse from earlier that evening. He was convinced the weight of the fish would go into double figures.
That hesitation, as he stared gobsmacked at the fish, was fata

‘Careful! It’s a bloody sight deeper on the other side of the…’
His warning came too late. Simon had already clambered over the croy and was now actually swimming. He disappeared behind the bush and Hughie was operating completely blind, hands above his head and clamped on the reel so that the salmon was kept at least somewhere close to Simon.
‘I can see it! Four more yards my way and I can get it!’
Hughie wound down the rod tip, the line now seemingly running through the middle of the bush, then hauled back and shipped two boots full of water over th

‘He drowned. It had been raining up in the headwaters, apparently, but not down this far, so the theory was that the river came up without him really noticing it in the dark. When he stepped off the bank into the neck of the Meadow to start fishing, he was swept away. He was nearly 70, so he just wasn’t strong enough to fight his way out.’ SILHOUETTE IN THE RIVER
David breathed out. ‘Bloody hell,’ he said quietly, feeling the hairs on the back of his neck and hands start to prickle. His body shook involuntarily at the memory of that silhouetted figure glaring

‘What is it?’ Steve asked, peering through his fishing glasses.
There was silence for a few moment, and then the boatman sucked in his breath. ‘Shark – it’s a bloody shark!’
From his tone of voice, Steve quickly deduced that his right-hand man was not a great fan of sharks. In fact, he sounded downright scared, which did not bode well for handling a large shark from a small boat. This was confirmed when the fish surfaced, whereupon Steve had the distinct impression that, had there been more room in the boat, the boatman would almost certainly have been try

Suffice to say that Peter’s family stuck firmly to the hotel’s swimming pool for the rest of their stay.
GREEDY AUSTRALIAN TROUT
The eternal question of whether or not fish feel pain when hooked and played on a rod and line will probably never be answered satisfactorily until humans learn to converse with aquatic life. Or will it?
any biologists suggest that fish do not have the required sensory system to feel as humans do, especially in mouths that have no nerves. However, others use elaborate tests, such as injecting bee venom into a laboratory rainbo

AMAZING FISHING STORIES
I didn’t see the float go under, because I wasn’t looking. I just have this vivid recollection of a truly violent pull on the rod, the like of which I had never felt before and seldom since. I didn’t see the fish, didn’t even hook it, which was just as well, because I think the rod would have immediately collapsed in sympathy. I was left with a feeling of profound shock, which rolls down the years to me still. I stood stunned, wondering what the hell this fishing lark was all about. My father, a clergyman, believed me when I stamme

Andrew finally plucked up the courage to go over and take a look at the crime scene. He stood up and shone his torch. No need to keep hidden now; sea trout were the last thing he was worried about. He crept along the bank and the beam of light caught the hunched-up figure of Chris, his back still leaning against a fence post beside the field. Then, oh joy! He moved, his arm coming up to cover his eyes against the glare of the torch.
KING HENRY’S HORSEMEN
‘What the hell happened?’ cried Andrew.
Chris’s face was white as a ghost and the expression on his

Added to that, a planeload of anglers can take three hours to clear passport control, so pedantic are the immigration officers, who take an average of at least 10 minutes to process each visitor. Then, before individual groups board the small fleet of ex-army helicopters to ferry them to their respective rivers, everyone’s passports are rechecked by border guards looking like clones from a James Bond movie. The only redeeming feature of Saturday mornings at Murmansk airport is the knowledge of what lies ahead in rivers teeming with salmon.
Steve Edge arrived

‘We’ve covered the whole ruddy fishery, every inch of it. We need fresher air.’
‘You two are too bloody scientific! What you don’t realise is that the salmon haven’t read the same books as you. Come on, let’s get fishing.’ ‘You go on, we’ll watch you.’
Robin sighed. ‘All right, I’ll go and start up at the top. Why don’t you two have another go here? Look, down there for instance, there’s a
likely-looking pot between those two rocks.’
‘What? No one fishes down there. It isn’t even a pool. Anything running the river goes straight through this water and

‘Great fish,’ cried the boatman. ‘It’s 20 kilos or 44 pounds, easy.’ At least he looked happier now as he lifted the fish into the boat and extracted the popper from its mouth. Steve picked up the giant trevally, photographs were taken and then he carefully returned it to the water to swim sedately away towards the rocks.
Steve took another couple of smaller giant trevallies and was playing a fourth fish. He hadn’t seen it yet and wasn’t convinced it was a trevally. It was definitely the smallest fish he had hooked so far and wasn’t fighting with the same gus

While pike are legendary as master predators, however tough they may be, they are not a species one would normally expect to return from the dead.
ark Everard is one of the best anglers for coarse fish you will come across in any part of the world. He is also a PhD and an acknowledged specialist on the life history of British fishes. His great passion is catching large roach but, on the occasion that led to the extraordinary sequence of events described here, he was after pike. They were not particularly huge pike where he was fishing, but he hoped he might h

The major played it well and patiently, which was surprising after this morning’s performance. This would be the fish of Murdo’s career, he knew that for certain, the one he would remember into his old age and tell his grandchildren about. And if he had to choose an angler to be on the other end right now, he would look no further than Major Jackson. He was, without question, the very best man for the job. ‘How long’s it been, Murdo?’
‘About 20 minutes, Major. He must be getting tired now.’
‘It doesn’t feel like it, and I keep seeing these fresh fish movin

I shrugged and forced out a laugh. ‘No problem, I’ll bring the biggame gear next time.’
As evening draws on, the Zambezi takes on an almost primaeval atmosphere, and I had a rather depressing feeling in my stomach that the river wasn’t prepared to give up any more of its inhabitants to a visiting Englishman; certainly not its monsters. It actually felt quite frightening at that point: the size of the river, together with the knowledge of what lay concealed beneath the blackened water, whether mammal, reptile or fish. There was a brooding grandeur to the place

But the real iconic Australian fish, with something of a cult status among its hoards of hunters, is the weird and wonderful barramundi, distant relative of the mighty Nile perch. It is weird because it frequents both salt and fresh water, and all barramundi are born male, only turning female later in life and definitely by the time they reach 17 pounds in weight. The much sought-after yard-long specimens are therefore all females and get very angry when hooked. They are the reverse of Atlantic salmon and sea trout, in that they spawn in the tidal reaches rather

Charles walked back towards the car. Then he stopped dead in his tracks and stared at O’Reilly. ‘If I dreamt all this, how did I know Maire’s name?’
O’Reilly had a weird look on his face. ‘That’s the bit I have no answer to, Mr Cuthbertson, no answer at all!’
SEA TROUT AND STANDING STONES
Night fishing for sea trout can be an eerie experience at the best of times. Link that to the atmosphere and ancient history of the Scottish islands, and you have all the ingredients for a classic ghost story.
