David told him what had happened and the keeper listened increasingly intently.

Not wanting to hang around ‘after his shift’, he immediately set out on a year’s sabbatical for Australia, where his wife, Natalie, had taken a new job. He decided to become a freelance writer and occasional consultant, concentrating on the huge variety of fishing open to him from his base in Sydney. He and Natalie rented an apartment overlooking the harbour, where the lure of the water, and the fish within it, quickly overpowered his will to stare all day at the computer screen.

Their bait was live mullet and their tackle was robust enough to handle the sort of fish that could be hooked out there in the spring, some of which were huge.
