No sooner had he said it than Hughie had a good draw on the line as the fly reached mid-channel. He lifted the rod and was into a fish, at which point, about 15 yards below, a very stale sea trout of 4 or 5 pounds leapt clear of the water.
‘Another kipper,’ said Simon and turned to walk to the head of the pool.
The head shaking and solid weight on the line didn’t feel like a sea trout. ‘That wasn’t my fish!’ Hughie called out. ‘Honestly, Simon, this feels a bit more serious!’
Simon came back as the line started to leave the reel at a steady speed agains

‘Be ready to cast out your bait,’ said Gagan, ‘right into the middle of the fish. One of them will most definitely take the sheep meat.’
In went the charred timber and what was left of the sheep, the pungent smell of burnt mutton pervading the air. Mark waited, poised for the action to start.
Nothing happened! The wood floated away on the current and the rest of the debris sank out of sight, but not a single fish showed on the surface. Gagan stared into the water. He was speechless and was muttering something under his breath. It seemed to Mark as though h

‘Okay, that’s enough,’ Don said. ‘Let her go back now.’
The fish stayed beside the boat looking at them for a few moments, then sank down, twisted away and disappeared.
The Japanese shook Mark’s hand vigorously. ‘Very good. We catch huge fish, yes?’
Mark made all the right noises about wishing one of the party had caught the marlin, but the Japanese seemed genuinely delighted that someone had caught a fish. Meanwhile, Don had opened up the boat’s big diesels and they were powering back through the swell towards Cairns.
Mark tidied the tackle and join
