However, some of the locals were not quite so concerned about foul hooking, just as long as they pulled something out. Poaching was a serious problem on the Lyn and the bailiffs were continually on the lookout for miscreants, although with the deep wooded ravines, catching them was never easy, especially as the poachers, by their very nature, were a crafty lot.

Miraculously, though, it didn’t dive, and 15 minutes later, with Robin and Jose having waded, stumbled and even swum at one point over 300 yards, the fish was finally beaten, swimming in a slow circle around the two men. Jose waited for the right moment, lunged in and grabbed its tail, then came up cradling 25 pounds of struggling permit.
‘Good on you, man!’ Jose’s smile split his face. ‘I knew you had it in you!’
At this point John, who had been watching the battle from the beach, waded up to congratulate his friend on his debut permit.
