‘Nah, they’ll go to the old folk and the poor who can’t afford to buy fish.’
‘Oh, right.’ That made him feel a good deal better about the killing bit. ‘What, even the shark?’
‘Especially the shark. People love them round here.’
The wounded crewman wandered off to find the doctor while the skipper took Peter and James, now reunited with Yvette and Rebecca, into the fishing clubhouse on the waterfront. This was colonial elegance in all its prewar splendour, freshly painted walls covered in fishing trophies, fans slowly revolving from the ceiling and waite

hillies can be wonderful characters, and they can also be as dour as a dreek Scottish weather event. Get them onside and they can help you catch fish where you would otherwise struggle, but the flipside is that you upset them at your peril. One such incident from the River Lochy, on Scotland’s west coast, started with an arrogant fishing guest making dictatorial demands and culminated in obedience to the letter, and just about as ignominious an end as it was possible to conjure up.
Back in the 1950s, when salmon were plentiful in Scottish rivers, it was commo

They had some good sea trout in the boat from the morning session, Veronica in particular having excelled herself dapping a Goat’s Toe. Now they happened to be close enough to Isle Maree for John to notice that there were fish rising just off its shoreline.
He glanced at the ghillie. ‘David, there must be a buzzer hatch or something going on over there. Let’s take a look.’
‘No point, they’ll only be small fish.’
‘They look like decent rises to me. It must be worth a cast?’
It was obvious that David wasn’t enthusiastic, but he set the boat to drift do

‘Bad luck. And snap, I’ve just done exactly the same.’
Richardsnorted.’We’rearightpair, then, aren’twe?Ican’tunderstand where mine went, mind you, because it certainly didn’t swim back into the middle. I think there’s a hole that’s been scoured out near the bank in the winter floods and it’s sulking down in that.’
Richard pointed. ‘Down there somewhere.’
The river had dropped even more since they started and Ben could make out a depression at the edge of the pool that looked as though it had undercut the bank. He carefully eased himself into the river, th

The postscript to this story is not such a happy one. A couple of years ago, John was visiting his elderly parents and, it being August after a period of heavy rain, decided to take a trip down memory lane and pay the Lyn a visit. With the river in flood, conditions looked ideal and, if THINGS AIN’T WHAT THEY USED TO BE
the river lived up to its reputation, it should be teeming with salmon and sea trout.
He arrived at the river at lunchtime, fully expecting there to be so many anglers that it would be difficult to park the car. The reality was that there w

‘What is it?’ Steve asked, peering through his fishing glasses.
There was silence for a few moment, and then the boatman sucked in his breath. ‘Shark – it’s a bloody shark!’
From his tone of voice, Steve quickly deduced that his right-hand man was not a great fan of sharks. In fact, he sounded downright scared, which did not bode well for handling a large shark from a small boat. This was confirmed when the fish surfaced, whereupon Steve had the distinct impression that, had there been more room in the boat, the boatman would almost certainly have been try

‘Rock cod or coral trout,’ said the skipper. ‘He’s bust you up on the coral down there. It’s lethal against monofilament.’
However, the fishing gods saved the best for the last day. The wind was calm and they were able to take a small boat out to an inshore reef, charmingly named ‘Robbie’s Knob’. While his colleagues caught brightly coloured orange nannygai on bottom baits, Martin fished fastmoving rubber lures just below the surface. He was just beginning to think that he had picked the wrong option when, out of nowhere, the water exploded as a queenfish gra

Thomas was quiet for a while, then put down his rifle. ‘I think he knew you had given your fish back to the river. That meant he wasn’t angry with us.’
While pike are legendary as master predators, however tough they may be, they are not a species one would normally expect to return from the dead.

contracts with Billingsgate dealers. They would send wooden boxes full of salmon down on the train to London at the end of each day. In retrospect this did little for conservation, but in many cases it paid for entire fishing trips.

The next day, somewhat hung over but still basking in the glory of a slam with three days’ fishing left, Mike waded the flats in search of jack. He was scanning the area immediately in front of him when he saw something shoot across the sand and stop abruptly. He peered through the rippling water and tried to make out what it was.
‘Carlos, over here. What’s that?’
‘That.’ Rather than point with his hand, Mike stuck the top of the super rod below the surface and meant merely to point in the general direction of the beast. However, what with water refraction

Richard had hatched a plan. ‘Don’t reel in any more. Just slowly walk backwards and I’ll grab it when it gets in the shallow bit.’
The strategy worked and soon the pike was floundering with its back out of the water. Richard caught hold of the trace and held it tightly, while Greg threw down the rod and jumped into the water behind the fish. Together, they rolled it up the bank, well away from the edge. ‘I don’t believe the size of it!’ shouted Greg. ‘It’s huge!’
‘Kill it! I’ve got to show Mum and Dad, haven’t I?’
There were paddles in the boat. Richard

They say that Africa gets into your blood and that you feel compelled to return. I will do one day, and I’ll take a modern travel rod with some more backbone, because I want a chance again at a truly wild freshwater fish of the size my imagination tells me that catfish was.
And while I’m about it, I’ll get some advice on how to improve the hook-up rate on those ruddy tiger fish as well.
