Mark began fishing for mahseer with his Indian guide, Gagan. He alternated between plugs and fish baits for this voracious predator, backed up by heavy tackle to handle the fish in the fast-flowing water at the confluence of the Saryu and Kali Rivers. The cliffs on either bank create an awesome, densely wooded Himalayan ravine through which the river flows, swelled by the melting glacial water from way back in the upland valleys. It was as awe inspiring a place as it was possible to imagine for a fishing trip, and Mark felt incredibly small within that fantastic

Having spent a fortnight in the bush advising on management options for some wetland areas, he was now in Cairns, generally considered to be the marlin capital of the world. He went down to the harbour as the sport fishing boats came home, waited for the clients to disembark and hailed one of the skippers.
‘Any chance of a trip in the next couple of days?’
‘No, mate, fully booked. So’s everyone else at the moment: fishing’s brilliant out there and every bugger wants a slice of the action.’ ‘No

Sea trout fishing at night is incredibly exciting, but it can be weird as well. Nocturnal noises can be put down to local wildlife and visions in the darkness logically explained away in the cold light of day. Or can they?
avid was a highly experienced fisherman with a particular love for sea trout. ‘Okay, so why was he haunting my fishing last night?’
‘Well, if my theory’s right, he was trying to scare you off the river, just like he was with the others when he appeared before. I think he was trying to make sure none of you met the same fate as he did.’
PART FOUR Amazing Days
ORKNEY OLIVES AND SEA TROUT
Fishing tales don’t necessarily need massive fish to make them stand out in the memory. They can stem from ordinary days that were spent seeking nothing more than the chance of a few fish and some solitude, espec

The head shaking and solid weight on the line didn’t feel like a sea trout. ‘That wasn’t my fish!’ Hughie called out. ‘Honestly, Simon, this feels a bit more serious!’
Simon came back as the line started to leave the reel at a steady speed against a tightened brake and a full bend in the 15-foot rod. Just then, at the bottom of the pool, where it runs into a glide, a tail appeared out of the water.
‘Bloody hell, Hughie!’
‘Told you! That’s the biggest tail I’ve seen in this river for years!’
He managed to stop the fish on that first run and recover so

‘I don’t believe that!’ cried George, and tapped Brett on the shoulder. ‘Did you see…?’
‘I saw it. I don’t believe it either, but I saw it. The bugger’s hooked up to Helen’s Para Dun but he’s still feeding on bloody beetles! Insane!’
George recovered his senses enough to pull in the anchor, and Brett navigated the boat around sunken tree trunks while Helen regained line. After several minutes manoeuvring, the line came free and Helen quickly regained contact with the fish, which, as though rejuvenated by the fresh intake of food, shot off on yet another

With that, they carefully encouraged the tarpon back into the water, where, with a disdainful flick of its huge tail, it slid away into the depths.
Meanwhile, Steve cut off the hook and handed it to Colin. It was practically bent out straight and wouldn’t have kept its hold on the fish for much longer. He grinned and slapped him on the shoulder. ‘You’d better keep that as a memento, Col. It’s no good for fishing any more, that’s for certain.’
The rest of the trip was a bit of a blur for Colin. There were more tarpon for the party, including one of 125 poun

‘They’re all wild,’ Brett told them over a break for a cup of tea. ‘We don’t stock Arthur’s Lake at all, yet we still take 20 000 trout off it each year, and that’s completely sustainable. The only limiting factor is the weather; the food just keeps coming and the fish grow like nowhere else I’ve seen. It’s one of the most fantastic stillwater habitats for trout

They don’t want large flies, but they will come to a small nymph, even a dry fly sometimes. Andrew’s friend had caught some beautiful fish up to 6 pounds, but there was one sea trout that had been driving him mad.

Two down and only the easiest of the trio, a bonefish, to catch. Confidence was high enough for them to enjoy a leisurely lunch, then back to the flats for the afternoon. However, the bonefish weren’t coming to the table of this particular slam, not helped by the tide, which had dropped back, making the water on the flats very skinny and the fish almost impossible to approach close enough for a cast.
So the day closed in the bar after dinner, with John tending the line burns on his legs and the two of them rueing the lost chance at the big one. Several rums d

oak planks along the hull. The flying gaff lived up to its name and flew straight back at Ray, hitting him hard on the shoulder before bouncing dangerously around on the deck.
The shark took off and came right out of the water again in another tail-walk. There was a loud metallic noise from Rick’s reel, and then the line broke with a resounding crack. The shark disappeared.
The flying gaff, that menacing piece of forged steel, had been bent out almost dead straight, as though someone had merely unpicked a paper clip. Ray was clutching his shoulder and the

Bertie was creased up laughing by this time, watching the rod top careering round the lake and giving a perfect pointer to where the fish was at any time. The pike even jumped a couple of times, the angle sending the rod section sliding back towards the boat, only to reverse its direction once the fish dived deeper and the angle changed back again. And because his cousin couldn’t put any real pressure on the fish with only 4 feet of butt section to work with, the fight went on much longer than normal. Eventually, though, the pike exhausted itself and came meekly

Then, about 120 yards behind the boat, there was a huge swirl and a large, brown head appeared on the surface. Across its mouth was the silver body of Barbara’s 50-pound King salmon.
‘What is it?’ Barbara cried.
‘It’s a sea lion!’ shouted the boatman. ‘A bloody great sea lion’s taken your fish!’
‘And I bet he’s eating it, the swine!’ she shouted, still holding on tightly to the rod and keeping up the pressure on the salmon-cum-sea lion. ‘Oh, he’s let go now… I think.’

It was obvious that David wasn’t enthusiastic, but he set the boat to drift down along the island’s shoreline. There wasn’t enough wind to dap, so they fished teams of traditional flies and, soon after starting, Veronica hooked a big sea trout. His guide wasn’t exactly enthusiastic. Actually, Steve suspected that this was more to do with taking the boat beyond the reef, and out of the boatman’s comfort zone, than with what species they were hunting. But a couple of crumpled banknotes in his shirt top pocket sealed the deal and they duly motored out beyond the reef and began fishing around the rocks outside the bay.
Steve’s first trevally was an amazing experience. The popper lure streaked across the surface and, all of a sudden, a massive head and shoulders appeared from beneath the waves, shadowed

‘And furry,’ Geordie added. ‘That’s a flaming otter!’
And so we watched the otter fishing for a few more moments until it finally caught a brown trout, considerably bigger than anything we had ORKNEY OLIVES AND SEA TROUT
brought to the boat that week. The animal ate it quickly on the surface and dived back under. We didn’t see it again, as hard as we looked for it all around the boat. Unbelievable as it seemed in that expanse of water, the otter simply disappeared.
We caught plenty more fish during the morning and decided to go back to the Merkister for

‘Do you ever catch pike, Mark?’ she asked.
‘Funny you should say that: they’re today’s mission.’
‘Do you ever eat them?’
‘Not if I can help it.’
‘I was reading a recipe for pike in a magazine and I think I’d like to try it. It sounds different. Any chance of bringing one home with you?
‘Well, I don’t mind killing the smaller ones, but I always put big pike back alive. Leave it with me and I’ll see what I can do.’

‘It’s huge,’ I said. ‘No way is that the same animal we saw this morning.’
‘It’s a dog otter,’ Geordie agreed. ‘Definitely different from this morning.’
The otter kept watching us, although we never seemed to get any closer, despite the fact we were drifting. He must have been backpedalling to keep hi

Mark went home feeling rather miffed. He didn’t really like killing pike and had only done so as a favour to the neighbour. He and his family certainly wouldn’t eat it, so the fish had died unnecessarily. Mark’s conservation background riled at that. It was okay to kill to eat, but anything else was non-sustainable and to be avoided at all costs.
He took the fish ou

Suffice to say that Peter’s family stuck firmly to the hotel’s swimming pool for the rest of their stay.
GREEDY AUSTRALIAN TROUT
The eternal question of whether or not fish feel pain when hooked and played on a rod and line will probably never be answered satisfactorily until humans learn to converse with aquatic life. Or will it?
any biologists suggest that fish do not have the required sensory system to feel as humans do, especially in mouths that have no nerves. However, others use elaborate tests, such as injecting bee venom into a laboratory rainbo

After Barbara’s experience over the past few minutes, she rather felt she could.
CROSSED LINES ON THE LOCHY
Very occasionally, one gets the feeling that conditions are perfect for fishing. It is just unlucky, therefore, when this coincides with the natural world fighting against you and an unheard-of ghillie’s blunder.
usbands and wives who fish together make for fascinating partnerships. Women are supposed to catch more fish because of the pheromones, although that myth probably has more to do with the female willingness to listen to a ghillie’s advice
