Mark began fishing for mahseer with his Indian guide, Gagan. He alternated between plugs and fish baits for this voracious predator, backed up by heavy tackle to handle the fish in the fast-flowing water at the confluence of the Saryu and Kali Rivers. The cliffs on either bank create an awesome, densely wooded Himalayan ravine through which the river flows, swelled by the melting glacial water from way back in the upland valleys. It was as awe inspiring a place as it was possible to imagine for a fishing trip, and Mark felt incredibly small within that fantastic

Having spent a fortnight in the bush advising on management options for some wetland areas, he was now in Cairns, generally considered to be the marlin capital of the world. He went down to the harbour as the sport fishing boats came home, waited for the clients to disembark and hailed one of the skippers.
