THINGS AIN’T WHAT THEY USED TO BE
However, some of the locals were not quite so concerned about foul hooking, just as long as they pulled something out. Poaching was a serious problem on the Lyn and the bailiffs were continually on the lookout for miscreants, although with the deep wooded ravines, catching them was never easy, especially as the poachers, by their very nature, were a crafty lot.
On one occasion, a poacher named Dave was inadvertently helped by Roy, the proprietor of the Watersmeet Tea Rooms, who, having seen the bailiff lurking about, tippe

Back to the Lochy, sometime in the mid-1950s. The fishing guest was a Major Jackson, at least for the purposes of this tale, and the ghillie answered to Murdo. So it was that Murdo met Jackson on the banks of the Lochy at 9 o’clock on a Monday morning. The weather was perfect, with good cloud cover, excellent visibility and a fresh atmosphere. It was perfect for salmon fishing and it was quite obvious that there were salmon in the river: they were showing all over the pool and Jackson was impatient to get started.
‘Now, Murdo, whatever else you do for me this

‘I think you’ve got more chance with a nymph,’ suggested Gendall.
John was using a 4-pound breaking-strain leader because of the clarity of the water. He lengthened this to account for the depth and tied on a small piece of white fluff as a bite indicator, then chose a size 16 pheasant-tail nymph, weighted to get down through the water column quickly. He then waded quietly into the edge of the current and made half a dozen upstream casts. They all landed roughly in the BROWNIE OF A LIFETIME

I returned to the top of the lower beat, to a superb pool that was fishing the best of the whole fishery. A party of Frenchmen were on the other bank and they had been catching salmon hand over fist for the past couple of days. The main taking zone was at the bottom of the pool, and I was slowly making my way down, observing my etiquette and not impeding my opposite number on the other bank, who was some little way ahead of me. Part of the agreement between the two fisheries was that neither side would wade too far into the river, so protecting the fish from unn

With that, they carefully encouraged the tarpon back into the water, where, with a disdainful flick of its huge tail, it slid away into the depths.
Meanwhile, Steve cut off the hook and handed it to Colin. It was practically bent out straight and wouldn’t have kept its hold on the fish for much longer. He grinned and slapped him on the shoulder. ‘You’d better keep that as a memento, Col. It’s no good for fishing any more, that’s for certain.’
The rest of the trip was a bit of a blur for Colin. There were more tarpon for the party, including one of 125 poun

Paul checked his watch again. ‘Two hours, 52 minutes. That’s one hell of a marathon fight, Colin.’
‘That’s one hell of a fish, too,’ said Steve. ‘Biggest tarpon I’ve ever seen, on this or any other boat out of the Keys.’
Colin had dropped the rod and was leaning on the boat, muscles screaming with exhaustion but with an unbelievable feeling of achievement in his head. Adrenalin was coursing round his veins faster than he had never experienced before, and he couldn’t speak for the moment. He was just staring down at the monstrous tarpon in front of him.

They made camp the first night on a low lying, grass-covered island, on which was the dead carcass of a big male hippo. Strangely, it didn’t smell too high, and Thomas was able to show Tom and Julie the animal’s incredible incisors, its main weapon, with razor edges that came together in one of the most destructive bites in the natural world. During the night they were serenaded with the constant grunts of live hippos, sounding for all the word like chainsaws, or even ancient seagull outboard engines. To add to the atmosphere, a leopard had come through the camp

The sea lion’s attention must have been completely on the salmon and its natural defence systems were therefore down at that precise moment. It either had no idea that there were other predators around, or it had forgotten about them in its feeding frenzy.
The water exploded alongside the animal and a great, sickle-shaped fin broke surface. Barbara had a split-second vision of the top half of a killer whale’s body above the water, and then its jaws closed around the sea lion in one monstrous lunge. There was an almighty swirl, a great head shake from the orca

‘It won’t be easy, will it?’
‘We’ll have to choose the right time and then stalk it.’
Andrew looked around him at the landmarks. There weren’t many to go on, apart from the fencing that kept the cows out of the river. There was a stile that they should be able to find in the dark, and they could pace it out from there to where the fish were lying, so they would know roughly where they were.
‘Okay, what do we do for the rest of the day?’
KING HENRY’S HORSEMEN
‘Visit the Motor Museum and the abbey,’ suggested Chris.

‘Blood loss and six hours’ dehydration,’ Duncan mused, ‘must have taken a few pounds off. How many d’you reckon, Percy?’
‘Easily that. The records can say what they like, but we caught a 1000-pounder today, Percy, I’m convinced of it.’
As a postscript, Duncan lost another massive tuna, visibly bigger than his record fish, after it towed the boat for 16 miles and he actually had it on the surface ready to gaff. Then, freakishly, the swivel at the top of the trace touched the boat’s gunwale and sprang the quick-release locking mechanism, and the fish was gon

They were quite optimistic that morning, as the weather had been rough up until a couple of days before but now the water was clearing, with enough of a swell to create some decent surf in the breakers. The bream and flatties should be feeding out in the deeper water, and it was an ideal sea state for a marauding bass to pick up one of the
whole calamari squid rolling around in their path, about 30 yards off the beach.
Frank and Terry hadn’t hatched any special plan to pay Ron back; it was just that, as he had walked some distance away to answer a call of

‘They look like decent rises to me. It must be worth a cast?’
It was obvious that David wasn’t enthusiastic, but he set the boat to drift down along the island’s shoreline. There wasn’t enough wind to dap, so they fished teams of traditional flies and, soon after starting, Veronica hooked a big sea trout. The fight went on for a good 10 minutes but, just as the boat drifted level with the southern tip of the island, the fish jumped and threw the hook.
‘Damn! That would have been my best ever!’ Veronica stated vehemently.
‘Don’t worry, there’s plenty mor

poking out from a rock, and it was a quick dash into the house to pick up his bamboo cane and return to tempt it from its lair with a worm or piece of meat. We tend to forget in today’s world of commercialism and modern fishing tackle that, back in the 1930s and 1940s, times were hard and Bill recalls a Mr Rowe, who owned a shop in Barnstaple High Street, selling bamboo canes with eyes crudely whipped on for sixpence.
Bill’s passion for the river inevitably rubbed off on John and, when he was old enough, they would fish together for salmon, sea trout and trou

‘Christ, Bill,’ Michael muttered at last. ‘I knew he was big, but that’s just bloody ridiculous!’
The fight went on and on, but just when Michael sensed the fish might be tiring, the river suddenly began to rise; the hydro plant had sent down an extra foot of water, so the increased flow turned the advantage completely back to the salmon. It was also harder to row the boat upstream, so Michael took the oars for a spell and gave the rod to Bill.
It was now that the fish, perhaps spurred on by the increased water, changed its pattern and, instead of keeping

The fish were now rising in front of him, so he had targets to aim for. He waited for a rise that was close enough, then went back to the basics of his father’s casting lessons and aimed precisely at the ring left by the trout’s nose breaking the surface. He missed the first few, but then he landed one exactly in the right place. There was an immediate, violent pull on the line. Victor had a brief vision of a shape swirling in the water, and then his reel was spinning out of control as the fish took off straight out into the loch, heading for deeper water.

‘It’s a sea lion!’ shouted the boatman. ‘A bloody great sea lion’s taken your fish!’
‘And I bet he’s eating it, the swine!’ she shouted, still holding on tightly to the rod and keeping up the pressure on the salmon-cum-sea lion. ‘Oh, he’s let go now… I think.’
Barbara began reeling in the salmon; or part of it, at least. She could still clearly see the sea lion on the surface, chewing on what she presumed was the tail end of the fish, seeing as the head end seemed to be coming across the surface towards the boat. The fight, of course, was over.

‘There is no one of that name here, Sir. This is a market stall. I don’t know this man.’
Steve raised his eyebrows. ‘Ah, right. I was told I could contact him here. Are you sure you don’t know him?’
‘Wait a minute, please.’
There was a brief pause, and he heard a more distant voice shouting out over the marketplace for anyone who might know the good colonel. Several minutes later, a new voice came down the line and yes, he knew of Colonel Nardhu and could provide contact details. And so the quest was underway.
After extended organisational negotiatio

Greg flipped the brass knob on the side of the reel to engage the ratchet, which made a horrendous rasping, metallic noise as the fish bore away.
‘What do I do now?’ cried Greg.
‘Put your hand underneath the reel to stop it!’
Greg cupped his hand under the revolving drum, gradually increasing pressure until the fish slowed down. He was then able to regain some line, until the fish changed direction and darted to the right, the line cutting through a lily-bed; several large green leaves were severed from their stems and floated free.
Somehow or other

‘I’m sure it’s your fish,’ he said. ‘There’s a definite indentation on top of its skull with a smaller one just behind it, and that scar on its flank kind of looked familiar from the television. It certainly looks to me as though some idiot tried to kill it when it was younger!’
PART SIX Research and Reminiscences
THINGS AIN’T WHAT THEY USED TO BE
Runs of salmon and sea trout are nowhere near as strong on English rivers today as they were in years gone by. One man has some remarkable stories to support this observation.
ohn Slader grew up with fishin

mackerel as bait. I especially remember his mates trying to decide how big the pouting would have to be before it could bite through that wire. They were merciless and, although I found it funny, I couldn’t help feeling sorry for the straight-faced one, especially as it transpired that he had been fishing like this ever since my last visit, so convinced was he that there was something outlandish down there among the girders.
I distinctly heard the reel ratchet go. It was not dissimilar to the moment in Jaws when the great white takes its first tentative hold

probably considered that the water was morally theirs after dark, no matter who reckoned they owned the fishing rights.
‘Well, it’s getting late, so I think I’ll leave you to it,’ he called out as loudly as he could. ‘There’s always tomorrow!’
He waded ashore, walked swiftly up the bank to collect his bag and then was off along the path to the hotel as fast as his legs would carry him. He had never felt like this before, not since his earliest days of being on the river after dark. The adrenalin was rushing through his body and he couldn’t wait to get back

They collected their kit and walked down to thepontoon, whereupon Colin plucked up all his courage and stepped onto the dory.
‘Right,’ said Dave, ‘drink the Coke, then eat the banana.’
Colin shrugged. ‘Okay, but be prepared to see them both again in a minute.’
With Coke drunk and banana swallowed, Colin sat in the stern seat as Captain Steve opened up the engines and headed up Big Pine Key for Bahia Honda bridge. Colin waited for his stomach to reject the concoction, together with last night’s beer, but the further they motored, the better he felt. In f

As the line came round in front of the tree there was a slight tug, but Tom couldn’t decide whether it was a fish or one of the submerged branches. He cast again in the same place and let the line come round, whereupon there was another tentative nibble, then the line went solid. He struck and everything went manic, as the tiger fish, much bigger than anything he had encountered thus far, came out of the water and showed all the splendour of its striped flanks, and even its outlandish teeth. It went straight out towards the middle of the current and turned downs

ARCTIC SALMON AND ICEBERGS
An iceberg was responsible for the most famous maritime disaster of all time, but you wouldn’t normally expect one to play a major role in a salmon-fishing trip, even one inside the Arctic Circle.
he Kola Peninsula, in north west Russia, offers some of the best fishing for Atlantic salmon in the world, but it is an incredibly remote place and can still be freezing cold in the middle of June. It was once a major training ground for Stalin’s Arctic troops and has never really lost that sense of military secrecy. This is perpetuated

Then there was the most horrendous scream he had ever had the misfortune to experience. It was only just along the bank and he knew instantly that something hideous must have happened to Chris. He recognised his voice only too well, albeit amplified in a violently rasping, throat-strangling sort of way. This was followed by a low, continuous moan, as though his friend was in utter turmoil over some godforsaken event that had overtaken him. Then, most dreadful of all, the unmistakable sound of galloping hooves going away over the field towards the forest.

Saturday morning saw the boys on the lakeside again. Greg had borrowed his father’s sea-fishing rod and big wooden ‘Scarborough’ reel, loaded with suitably strong line. They tackled up, tied on the wire trace and mounted one of the sprats as the magazine article had showed them: one hook in the head, the other just behind the dorsal fin.
Greg cast the sprat out, although he needed a couple of goes to get it in roughly the right place, just to the left of the tip of the island, where the pike had snatched the perch. He rested the rod in a forked stick and they
