The Collie Dog had one of its trebles straightened and another completely crushed. Michael didn’t feel particularly upset at losing the fish after more than eight hours, just slightly annoyed that he hadn’t fished with the 17-foot double hander, which he was sure would have beaten the fish by lunchtime.
The post mortem that evening couldn’t agree on a weight for the salmon. They estimated the length at around 4 feet, but it was the great depth and width across the back that had made it seem so colossal and its true size difficult to gauge. Michael would only

‘For God’s sake, sir, let this one run, it’s bloody…’
‘Yes, I can see what size it is for myself, thank you, Murdo.’
Murdo shut up and watched in awe as the fish bored deep, ran first upstream, then down towards the tail of the pool, and then leapt, not AMAZING FISHING STORIES

Barry managed to push the eel away and scramble clear. At last, the skipper, toes poking through the hole in his boot, landed a blow on the conger’s head with the baseball bat, momentarily stunning the fish. Making good use of his temporary advantage, he grabbed a longhandled bait-cutting blade and cut through the monofilament just above the trace. He then attempted to kick the eel with his one good boot towards the open hatch into the fish hold.
Unfortunately, the kick only succeeded in waking up the conger, which, now completely free from the line, started

Bola hauled Steve unceremoniously out of the coracle and he finished the fight in pitch darkness on the beach, the hills starkly silhouetted against a brightly moonlit sky. At the last minute, as it was obvious that the fish was exhausted, Saban switched on his torch and there, gradually appearing out of the cloudy water, came the most magnificent, golden apparition.
‘Mahseer!’ whispered Bola in a hushed, reverential tone, proving that he was every bit as awestruck by the sight as Steve himself was. ‘Now, that is a great, great fish!’
The mahseer seemed pe

He arrived at the river at lunchtime, fully expecting there to be so many anglers that it would be difficult to park the car. The reality was that there was just one other vehicle in the car park; perhaps everyone had caught their allowance of a brace of fish and gone home early.
