The session began quite normally. Dinner in the hotel had been excellent and he had kept his alcohol intake down to a glass of wine with his meal and a small nip of whisky with his coffee, a ritual he always followed before venturing out to hunt sea trout. Dusk was drawing in as he walked down to the river, there was good cloud cover and it was warm without being muggy. The portents for a decent night’s fishing were excellent.

No sooner had he said it than Hughie had a good draw on the line as the fly reached mid-channel. He lifted the rod and was into a fish, at which point, about 15 yards below, a very stale sea trout of 4 or 5 pounds leapt clear of the water.

From his tone of voice, Steve quickly deduced that his right-hand man was not a great fan of sharks. In fact, he sounded downright scared, which did not bode well for handling a large shark from a small boat. This was confirmed when the fish surfaced, whereupon Steve had the distinct impression that, had there been more room in the boat, the boatman would almost certainly have been trying to hide behind him.
He pulled the fish alongside.
‘Lemon shark,’ stated the boatman.
‘They’re not particularly dangerous, are they?’
‘All sharks dangerous!’
