‘I’ve got a better idea,’ said John.
John took out his hip flask and poured a few drops of whisky into the water. ‘I name this place the CBA Pot.’ Robin’s frown deepened. ‘CBA?’ ‘Can’t Be Arsed,’ said John.
The name has stuck. And when the water is low on the Coquet, the threesome wouldn’t dream of fishing without a few casts in the CBA Pot; even though, to their knowledge, it hasn’t produced another fish from that day to this!

Barry managed to push the eel away and scramble clear. At last, the skipper, toes poking through the hole in his boot, landed a blow on the conger’s head with the baseball bat, momentarily stunning the fish. Making good use of his temporary advantage, he grabbed a longhandled bait-cutting blade and cut through the monofilament just above the trace. He then attempted to kick the eel with his one good boot towards the open hatch into the fish hold.
Unfortunately, the kick only succeeded in waking up the conger, which, now completely free from the line, started

Having read another article on pike fishing, Richard went into town on the Friday and took his pocket money into the tackle shop while his mother was buying groceries next door. He came out with a wire trace and two treble hooks, and a recommendation from the tackle dealer to buy some sprats from the fishmonger for bait.
Saturday morning saw the boys on the lakeside again. Greg had borrowed his father’s sea-fishing rod and big wooden ‘Scarborough’ reel, loaded with suitably strong line. They tackled up, tied on the wire trace and mounted one of the sprats as

The sea lion seemed to have finished the tail because it was now swimming at some speed after the rest of the fish. Barbara realised with horror that she was actually fishing for a sea lion with about 25 pounds of front-end king salmon as bait.
‘Quickly!’ the boatman shouted. ‘He’s catching up!’
The sea lion’s attention must have been completely on the salmon and its natural defence systems were therefore down at that precise moment. It either had no idea that there were other predators around, or it had forgotten about them in its feeding frenzy.
The w

In the mid-1970s, a Mr Chevalier hooked a big fish in April in the upper river, but lost it after half an hour. In early June, estate owner Richard Tyser saw a group of black-backed gulls feeding on the riverbank, and found the remains of a huge fish that had died of the devastating disease of that time, ulcerative dermal necrosis or UDN. These remains weighed 38 pounds, so what the whole fish would have been we can only surmise.
The most recent encounter with a really big salmon was in October 2001. Captain Tim Ritson and party were fishing the lower river,

The keeper was quiet for a moment or two, then looked at David with an embarrassed expression. ‘This has happened a few times before and always under the same conditions. You probably haven’t seen the river this morning, but it’s come up a hell of a lot since you were out there fishing; it’s been raining up on the moor, just like it did when
Herbert Tattershall drowned.’
‘Okay, so why was he haunting my fishing last night?’
‘Well, if my theory’s right, he was trying to scare you off the river, just like he was with the others when he appeared before. I

‘Any chance of a trip in the next couple of days?’
‘No, mate, fully booked. So’s everyone else at the moment: fishing’s brilliant out there and every bugger wants a slice of the action.’ ‘No chance at all?’ he pleaded.
The skipper took off his baseball hat and scratched his head. ‘You do a lot of fishing, do you?’
‘Yes, all over the world.’
The skipper nodded. ‘Okay, come out with my party tomorrow. They’re a group of Japanese businessmen and I don’t think they’ve much idea what they’re doing. My crewman’s got a doctor’s appointment, so if you help m

Very occasionally, one gets the feeling that conditions are perfect for fishing. It is just unlucky, therefore, when this coincides with the natural world fighting against you and an unheard-of ghillie’s blunder.
usbands and wives who fish together make for fascinating partnerships. Women are supposed to catch more fish because of the pheromones, although that myth probably has more to do with the female willingness to listen to a ghillie’s advice and follow it, rather than any gender-based advantage over their male counterparts. Some men still have hunter-ga

The fight was very dogged for the next two hours, with the fish not bothering to run very far but always moving powerfully around the pool. Michael and Bill followed it in the boat for a while, but then went ashore and tried unsuccessfully to coax it into the shallow water. Bill fetched a flask of coffee from the car and, once revitalised with caffeine, they went back in the boat and encouraged the salmon into the deeper water, where Michael held it against the flow in a vain attempt to drown it. The problem was that whenever the fish wanted to do something, its

Mark made all the right noises about wishing one of the party had caught the marlin, but the Japanese seemed genuinely delighted that someone had caught a fish. Meanwhile, Don had opened up the boat’s big diesels and they were powering back through the swell towards Cairns.
Mark tidied the tackle and joined him in the wheelhouse. ‘How big was the marlin?’
‘About 450, 475, something like that. Not a grander, but a bloody good fish, just the same. Not bad, considering you haven’t paid a cent for the trip!’
Once they reached calmer water, Don motioned for

‘Er… I could cut the head off and even fillet it, if you thought that would help?’
‘I don’t think it would. I’ve already seen those eyes and that mouth, and I’d be thinking of them when I was eating. I’m really grateful to you for trying, but I think I’ll leave it this time.’
Mark went home feeling rather miffed. He didn’t really like killing pike and had only done so as a favour to the neighbour. He and his family certainly wouldn’t eat it, so the fish had died unnecessarily. Mark’s conservation background riled at that. It was okay to kill to eat, but

Mark wasn’t sure what to think about this. He was after mahseer, but had heard so much about this ugly brute that he was fascinated to see DYNAMITE AND GOONCH
what all the fuss was about. Then the run stopped dead and the line went solid. He pumped the rod as hard as he dare, but couldn’t move the fish.
‘He’s snagged me round a rock!’
‘No, no! He’s snagged you between rocks,’ cried Gaurav, laughing now and obviously enjoying himself immensely. ‘Now you will see how we really fight the goonch.’
With that, Gaurav picked up a sizeable rock and ran downs
