He had even broken off from fishing for a while to film the animals, a shotgun ready in one hand just in case, while operating a rather shaky camera in the other.

‘Heathens!’ muttered John. ‘Where are we going for supper?’

Reading councillor who entered local politics to overturn an angling ban on a popular stretch of the River Thames in Berkshire, south east England, this fanatical fisherman was always going to be combining business with pleasure. One of his primary aims from the start was to get a better deal for anglers in the decision-making process, and to see them recognised in their rightful place as conservationists of the aquatic environment. ‘Jeeesuuus!’ Ray muttered. ‘It’s even bigger than I thought. We’re just not geared up for this size of fish, Rick.’

‘When are you going after him, then?’
‘I don’t fish the Beaulieu at night, Andrew; too bloody creepy for my liking. No, I’ll leave the fish to you, but you’ll owe me one if you catch him.’
So the plot was hatched and Chris agreed to accompany Andrew on the quest. They went down to the lower river in the morning, when the tide was just flooding, and did a thorough recce. There were a number of small sea trout shoals lying against the far bank, some with large fish among them, although not the sort of size they had been told to expect. Then, just as the tide

‘Okay, but stay with me; this looks hairy.’
Hughie followed the fish, trying to keep some sort of contact and only giving line when he had to. He didn’t want too much fly line on the water: it would create impossible drag in those conditions and could easily pull the hook free from what he was now convinced was the fish of the season. He was getting soaking wet from shipping water over his chest waders, plus the drizzle that had now evolved into a monsoon, but he was oblivious to that for the moment as he concentrated completely on his line cutting through th

‘You got the spinner with you. Spinner’s great for jack, too.’
Mike put the fly rod back in the boat, wondering whether crab nipping constituted entitlement to a new tip under the lifetime guarantee deal. Feeling distinctly miffed, he grabbed the spinning rod and followed Carlos sullenly in search of jacks, convinced that the fishing gods had turned against him because the slam had been too easy.
‘There!’ pointed Carlos. ‘That’s jack, man. Just cast over the top and bring the spinner back through them. One’s certain to take.’
One did take and set off on

‘Especially the shark. People love them round here.’
The wounded crewman wandered off to find the doctor while the skipper took Peter and James, now reunited with Yvette and Rebecca, into the fishing clubhouse on the waterfront. This was colonial elegance in all its prewar splendour, freshly painted walls covered in fishing trophies, fans slowly revolving from the ceiling and waiters in white coats and gloves serving drinks. It was a complete throwback.
The beer was ice cold as well. Peter was just relishing his when he realised that there was the cast of

ROACH TO PERCH TO MONSTER PIKE
Youngsters like nothing better than experimenting with fishing techniques and learning from experience. Reading magazine articles can conjure up dreams of catching a monster; and just occasionally, the dream comes true …
n the 1960s, when boys were still allowed to go off fishing on their own, Greg and Richard were given permission to fish in a beautiful private lake in the grounds of a manor house on the border between Surrey and Sussex in southern England. They had no real idea what fish were in the lake and, at 10 years

‘Then what? You can’t cast a rock back out to sea, can you?’
‘True. Hey, I know.’ Terry started rummaging around in his tackle box. ‘I’ve got a perk in here somewhere. I bought it for that boat trip last month and never used it. There you go.’ He pulled out a long, silver-coloured and vaguely fish-shaped metal tube, with a swivel at one end and a large treble hook at the other. ‘How heavy is it?’ asked Frank. ‘About a pound, I should think.’ ‘Will his rod be able to cast it?
‘Yeah, if we’re careful. And with that shape on the perk, it’ll feel like it’s wri

What Ben did not realise at this point was that he was standing on a similar length of bank to the one from underneath which he had extricated Richard’s fish. As he lent forward with the net, the undercut bank gave way and he was propelled head first into the river, into considerably deeper water than when he had been tickling for salmon. He managed to keep hold of his rod but, freezing and shocked, it was a major struggle to get back to the bank lower down the pool and somehow haul himself out with his chest waders full of water. He was soaked through and peris

The day started with Michael making sure that all the members of his party were settled on their allotted beats. He dropped Bill Hatten off at the island above Breaches pool, then drove down and parked at Minister’s. The water was low that morning, with no compensation flow coming through, so he left his double-handed rods in the car and took a 10-foot carbon single hander down to the pool. His reel, a Shakespeare Speedex, was loaded with a full-length slow sink line and about 80 yards of backing. He was using two flies: a shrimp on the bob and a Collie Dog on t

One of the crewman plucked up the courage to go forward and extract the hook from the shark’s mouth. He was obviously no fan of sharks and looked genuinely scared of this one, despite the number of times it had been smacked over the head. Now, though, just at the critical moment when the hook was about to come loose, the fish gave an energetically nervous shake of its head. The hook, under tension from the line being held tightly, flew out and lodged firmly in the back of the crew’s hand.
After an initial yelp, he seemed quite calm about the accident, even wh

a figure-of-eight retrieve. At one point he looked away from the inky water in front of him, downstream to the Meadow, and was shocked to see that there was another angler fishing there. The person was standing at the neck of the pool, the silhouette of his top half against the sky and the rest of him less distinct against the water. He was in exactly the spot David was planning to be in a few moments, which was frustrating, because the keeper had told him he would be the only one out there tonight. It was also strange that the other fisher, whoever he or she wa

Will the British record for rod- and line-caught salmon ever be beaten? One angler’s in-depth research suggests there is one river that could host such a giant fish.
any people would say that the day of huge salmon running British rivers to spawn has passed. There was a time when commercial netsmen regularly caught massive fish, and rod and line fishermen landed, and lost, many salmon of more than 40 pounds. Over more celebratory whisky, the discussions went on, especially about the true weight of the fish as it would have been when it first came out of the water.
‘Blood loss and six hours’ dehydration,’ Duncan mused, ‘must have taken a few pounds off. How many d’you reckon, Percy?’
‘Easily that. The records can say what they like, but we caught a 1000-pounder today, Percy, I’m convinced of it.’
As a postscript, Duncan lost another massive tuna, visibly bigger than his record fish, after it towed the boat for 16 miles and he actually had it on the surface r

The closest permit was upended and feeding, so was distracted for the moment. Robin cast with more commitment this time, and landed the crab pattern as lightly as he could, just beside the fish. Immediately the fly landed he tweaked it slightly, copying the defence mechanism of the natural animal to get out of the way of the predator.
The permit immediately looked interested at this morsel of food flying in from above, but was not immediately fooled into taking it. Up came the aristocratic brow, frowning as though it didn’t altogether BONES, PERMIT AND TARPON

The water exploded alongside the animal and a great, sickle-shaped fin broke surface. Barbara had a split-second vision of the top half of a killer whale’s body above the water, and then its jaws closed around the sea lion in one monstrous lunge. There was an almighty swirl, a great head shake from the orca, then it sank below the surface and left just an oily, bloody patch of water where the sea lion had been.
Barbara stopped reeling, not believing what she was seeing.
‘Jeees!’ was all the boatman could summon up. ‘I ain’t seen nothing like that out here

Murdo couldn’t believe how the major played his salmon. Most fishermen were so desperate to make sure they landed their fish that they tended to be over-cautious, especially with the first one of the week. Not so Major Jackson. He hardly allowed the fish to run, but rather took all the energy out of it by holding it close on a short line and an unusually thick leader. It seemed to work, though, because the fish was in Murdo’s net within two minutes and swiftly despatched with a heavy wooden priest.
For the first time this morning, Jackson actually smiled, twe

In a kind of trance, unable to take in what was going on, Patrick lifted the fishing tackle out of the boat and placed it on the gravel shore. However, of one thing he was absolutely certain. He wasn’t hanging around the island all day while Herr ruddy Schmidt sat on his backside waiting for something to impale itself on a worm-infested hook.
‘If I was you, sir, I would fish down the bottom end, there now. The water is deeper and probably better for eels.’
‘Are you not staying with me a little?’

Some are tales of extraordinary events happening to ordinary people seeking nothing more than a few hours of solitude with a fishing rod. Others involve great characters and big personalities, to whom standout happenings are probably commonplace. They all embrace one central facet, though: a love of fish and fishing, and the truly wonderful places across the globe to which the s

She was not the ideal angling boat, as her masts and rigging got in the way, but her character made up for that, as did her skipper, Ray Barnett. People joked that his face had more furrows than a ploughed field, moulded from years at sea and an impish sense of fun that meant he was continually laughing.
