The total length of the course is 6208 yards, with a S.S.S. of 70. There are two really long holes of 557 and 516 yards, so even the tigers will find that there is plenty of scope for good, honest hard hitting. Most of the par four holes are well within the two shot distance for the average player. Churston calls for a great variety of shots, but the holiday golfer will find from the point of view of length, it does not provide too exacting a test.

The course is 18 holes occupying some 150 acres of rolling Cheshire countryside. From the men’s white tees it measures 6414 yards with a par and standard scratch of 71, consisting of 2 par 5s, 3 par 3s and 13 par 4s. From the ladies red tees the course measures 5489 yards with a par of 72, consisting of 3 par 5s, 3 par 3s and 12 par 4s.A “halfway house” by the 11th tee is used to provide light refreshments on selected competition days and weekends.The practice ground is 300 yards long by 200 yards wide and provides ample opportunity for players to loosen up before starting their round, or to re-groove their swing with assistance from the Pro. The practice ground includes a practice green for practising chipping and bunkers shots.There are practice putting and chipping greens near the 1st tee.All greens apart from the 3rd are played all year round. A winter green (the old 1st green) provides protection from play on the actual 3rd green, which is subject to long periods of frost during the winter due to its shaded position close to the perimeter stream.

Mere Golf & Country Club

The James Braid designed golf course at Mere is as famous for its beauty as it is for the challenges it presents. The 6,817-yard, par-71 course was created out of 150 acres of Cheshire parkland in 1934 (click here to read more about the history of Mere). Mature trees, rhododendron bushes and the lake add considerable charm to a day’s golf but they are also there to test you! Water, ravines and thick vegetation have been incorporated into the layout so that care and accuracy are demanded on many holes. The last four holes in particular are notorious for wrecking previously respectable score cards. Sky Sports commentator Steve Beddoes has described Mere as ‘The Wentworth of the North’.

The club has around 800 members in total across all sections, and of these about 100 are single-figure players, which speaks volumes about the standard of player the course attracts. At 6231 yards, it is not a long course. However, it does offer a fair and interesting test of golf, requiring accurate shots in order to score well.Thanks to its excellent drainage, the course is rarely closed due to rain, though obviously thunderstorms pose the same threat here as anywhere else! Temporary greens are also seldom used unless there’s an early morning frost. Occasionally, though, a mist rolls in from the Channel, and so checking the local weather forecast is advisable, particularly if travelling any distance to play here.
