Minchinhampton Golf Club

Minchinhampton Golf Club, which was founded in 1889, comprises three golf courses, each of quite different character. The Old Course, on Minchinhampton Common, provides a good test, with some particularly excellent par 3s, and is situated on common land between Stroud and Minchinhampton. The Old Course offers traditional golf with a newly refurbished modern clubhouse, and is run separately from the New Courses.

Painswick Golf Club

On December 1st, 1891 a circular appeared in the “PAINSWICK ANNUAL REGISTER” which invited ladies and gentlemen to join the “Painswick Golf Club”. This, it seems, is the first mention of the Club to appear in print. The Club had actually been formed on October 8th, 1891. The first President of the new Club was T. Dyer Edwardes, Esq., and the first Secretary was E. H. Percival, Esq. A prospectus was available which stated that “. . . a good sporting Golf course had been laid out on Painswick Common”.The course had been laid out in 1891 by David Brown of the Malvern Club. (Given the course he planned, it can be assumed that Mr. Brown had no connection with a certain firm of tractor manufacturers!). He had in fact been Open Champion in 1868 and his course was of 9 holes played in the opposite direction to the present plan. The present 9th was probably the original 1st and the last hole was near the “Royal William” which served as a clubhouse until 1915. The early committee meetings were held at Kimsbury House, the home of Sir John Percival, which can be seen from the 6th tee towards Upon St. Leonards.

Undulating fairways and tight lies give the course a downland/links character. Bracken and gorse punish wayward shots and on windy days golfers need to negotiate the hazards with care. There are many longer courses, but few with a finer set of par-threes. Equally memorable are the closing holes, usually played into the wind. The 18th in particular with its intimidating gorse and renowned split-level fairway will live long in the memory.

Without doubt the 18 hole golf course is maturing into one of the most picturesque and well conditioned golf courses in the Vale of Glamorgan. The 5291 yard course demands more than just length, it requires a little bit of imagination to manoeuvre your way around and over the mature oaks, bunkers and banks – not to mention the odd water hazard here and there. We believe our course is a fair challenge for any level of golf and an enjoyable challenge that makes you come back year after year.

At just over 6101 yards and par 70, the course provides a good challenge for all standards of golfers. The course is situated on a mountain and is semi-parkland. The course has a few gentle inclines, but these are worthwhile as the golfer is treated to panoramic views. To the North, are the beautiful Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountain, to the South, the Swansea Valley, Mumbles Head and Swansea Bay. From the tee of the 16th, known locally as the pulpit, these magnificent views are captured
