Colin frowned. ‘Why?’
They collected their kit and walked down to thepontoon, whereupon Colin plucked up all his courage and stepped onto the dory.
‘Right,’ said Dave, ‘drink the Coke, then eat the banana.’
Colin shrugged. ‘Okay, but be prepared to see them both again in a minute.’
With Coke drunk and banana swallowed, Colin sat in the stern seat as Captain Steve opened up the engines and headed up Big Pine Key for Bahia Honda bridge. Colin waited for his stomach to reject the concoction, together with last night’s beer, but the further they motored,

As is often the case with big conger, it became a dour fight, with Barry winning back line, only to lose it again as the fish bored back towards the wreck. A war of attrition ensued for a good 20 minutes before the eel finally broke surface.
‘Blimey!’ cried the skipper. ‘We ain’t had one that big for years!’
The conger kept shaking its head and body like a snake, trying to move backwards across the surface away from the boat. Another few minutes of brute force wrestling went by until Barry eventually brought the conger close enough for the skipper to reach

The fight went on much longer than five minutes. The rain kept pouring down and Hughie could see the river rising in front of his eyes. The flow was appreciably stronger now, and not only was the water perilously close to the top of his chest waders, he was finding it increasingly difficult to stay upright. Fish of the season or not, the situation was getting stupid.
‘Come on, Hughie, just give the bloody thing some welly! You’ve only got two chances anyway, and we’ll die if we stay out here much longer.’
Hughie lent back and bent the rod as far as it woul

Nothing happened! The wood floated away on the current and the rest of the debris sank out of sight, but not a single fish showed on the surface. Gagan stared into the water. He was speechless and was muttering something under his breath. It seemed to Mark as though he was meditating or deep in prayer. He stayed that way for a couple of minutes, then suddenly came out of his trance.
‘This is very enlightening for me,’ said Gagan reverently. ‘You see, I now understand that the mahseer must know when a true cremation is taking place. They appreciate that they a

Suffice to say that Peter’s family stuck firmly to the hotel’s swimming pool for the rest of their stay.
GREEDY AUSTRALIAN TROUT
The eternal question of whether or not fish feel pain when hooked and played on a rod and line will probably never be answered satisfactorily until humans learn to converse with aquatic life. Or will it?
any biologists suggest that fish do not have the required sensory system to feel as humans do, especially in mouths that have no nerves. Howev

He hooked another fish 20 minutes later and a similar fight took place, Gaurav throwing rocks to dislodge the fish and Mark trying clever tactics, none of which worked. Once again, the line finally parted from the constant fraying against rock.
This had become personal between Mark and the goonch. He had fished all over the world and had never given up on a challenge. It was time for a change of tactics, from angling purity to brute force.
It was two hours later that Mark hooked his third goonch. This fish felt heavier, hauling out line against the multipl

Victor sniffed and stared at him. It made sense, especially as he had seen a glimpse of a huge bird himself. ‘But you’ll never believe how big it was, never!’
His father put an arm round his shoulder. ‘Of course I believe you,
Victor. And anyway, we’ve got ample proof, haven’t we?’
‘Look at the stone.’
Victor looked, and there was a distinct wet outline on the dry rock of where the fish had been lying. You could see where the tail had lain flat, and there was even the mark of one of the pectoral fins just behind the head.
‘That looks to me like th

‘Jeeesuuus!’ muttered Murdo under his breath. ‘That’s 40 pounds of salmon if ever I saw it.’
‘A bit coloured, isn’t it?’
‘Perhaps not as fresh as some, but it’s not too bad, sir.’
The major played it well and patiently, which was surprising after this morning’s performance. This would be the fish of Murdo’s career, he knew that for certain, the one he would remember into his old age and tell his grandchildren about. And if he had to choose an angler to be on the other end right now, he would look no further than Major Jackson. He was, without question,

here tend to be a few large, territorial fish in each New Zealand river location, which can be hard to spot and fiendishly difficult to approach. And, once in position, you have to be deadly accurate with the cast so as not to disturb the famously spooky fish. The slightest error, and they melt away like ghosts.
John Hotchkiss had fished all over the world and produced a successful television series, The Take, which featured game-fishing venues from many different countries. This trip to New Zealand was in advance of the crew arriving to film one of the episo

The second day they targeted permit, which his more experienced friends said were difficult, although John had caught three before and briefed Mike on how to induce a take. Again, with Carlos’s expert knowledge of the flats, they found a small pod of fish in slightly deeper water than they had fished yesterday. Mike’s third cast at the lead permit fell just right, and he allowed the crab to sink to the bottom before executing John’s suggested twitch to bring some life to the lure. The permit, now feeding upended, reacted immediately and smothered the crab, where

The fight lasted a good 15 minutes. Once he had stopped that first run, Robert brought the fish back into the deeper water and managed to keep it there, letting it run round in the open but always feeling that he had some control over it. Once he felt the fish weakening, he started backing up towards the shallower water close to the bank, coaxing the fish in with him. He unhooked the net from his back, put his foot on the head and extended the handle in preparation for landing the sea trout.

Robert brought the fish into the shallows

Skerries are small outcrops of rock that poke above the surface of the loch, often as tiny stony beaches in the middle of otherwise seemingly deep water. Despite being 3000 acres in area, Harray is seldom more than 6 feet deep and these shallow areas were always the best for fishing back then. This one seemed peculiar, though. Geordie was right: it was too high out of the water.
We were about 100 yards away when the stones started to move, then slid off the back of the skerry.
‘I do not believe it,’ shouted Peter. ‘It’s a seal!’
‘No,’ said Geordie, ‘you
