‘This isn’t a recognised pool. We need to name it.’ ‘How about Robin’s Pot?’ Robin suggested modestly.
‘I’ve got a better idea,’ said John.
John took out his hip flask and poured a few drops of whisky into the water. ‘I name this place the CBA Pot.’ Robin’s frown deepened. ‘CBA?’ ‘Can’t Be Arsed,’ said John.
The name has stuck. And when the water is low on the Coquet, the threesome wouldn’t dream of fishing without a few casts in the CBA Pot; even though, to their knowledge, it hasn’t produced another fish from that day to this!

All except one. He kept a straight face until his friends had quietened down. ‘Actually, I hooked something down here last week that I couldn’t move. Never felt anything like it before in my life.’
‘Rubbish, of course you didn’t. You just hooked the pier again, like you’re always doing.’
‘It moved,’ the straight-faced one said. ‘If it was the pier, it was bloody well travelling at the time.’
‘Too much beer the night before, if you ask me,’ said another, and the laughter went on around the rap rap rap on my rod tip that heralded yet another pouting on th

Despite the fact that it was June, the banks of the Varzuga were piled high with ice that had floated down the river on high-melt water flow, only to be stranded as the levels dropped. In places the ice was 7 yards high and gave a surreal Arctic backdrop to a salmon-fishing location. It was also perishingly cold as Steve waded gingerly past the huge boulders and ice blocks along the shoreline, looking for a safe standing in the river from which to launch his attack. He wished the hammering in his head would stop and he made a mental note to lay off the vodka tha

That hesitation, as he stared gobsmacked at the fish, was fatal. The sea trout splashed once, whipped its tail away from the net and made a sudden charge for deeper water. Robert wasn’t prepared for the move, the rod bent double as the braided loop at the end of the fly line caught in the top ring, and then the leader broke above the hook. The rod sprang back, the fish was gone and Robert slumped onto his backside in the shallow water in despair. He was practically crying with frustration.

That was the cue for the marlin to break through the surface, its long bill pointed skywards as it cut through a trough between the swells and disappeared into the next wall of water before boring away into the depths. The adrenalin was pumping through Mark’s body now, with the exhilaration of seeing the fish so early in the fight. The power surging up the line was unbelievable.

The boatman merely shook his head and tried to move even further away.
Steve’s brain went into overdrive. ‘Okay. Look, you take the rod and leave the rest to me.’
The boatman didn’t look too happy about this plan either, but it must have seemed the least dangerous option for him, so he gingerly took the rod, although he handled it as though it was a live bomb. Steve grabbed the anchor from the bows and dragged it back amidships. He took hold of the rope, lunge

It transpired that the boat had landed an estimated 80-pound tarpon and, while the captain was trying to release it, a 12-foot lemon shark had come from nowhere and slashed it in half. Even though the crew were fighting it off with the boat hooks, the shark seemed determined to grab the rest of the fish, although it finally gave up and swam away, leaving about 40 pounds of front-end tarpon on the boat, jagged teeth marks where the tail end had been ripped away.
Back in Salisbury, Peter presented Colin with a framed collage of six images of the fight and the f

‘Clear as day, Major Jackson. Can I suggest the Munro killer this morning?’
‘I always fish a blue charm! There’s my box; I’ve every size we’ll need, on singles and trebles, so make sure you look after them. Now, where do I start on this pool?’
‘Just follow me, Major Jackson.’
Jackson followed Murdo up the bank. ‘And one more thing. I don’t want any fish with holes in their bodies; it affects the price terribly. So no gaffs: all fish must be carefully netted, do you understand?’
‘Quite understood, Major Jackson,’ said Murdo patiently. He met all kinds

The monstrous beast reached the bank. Robert stared in terrified fascination as the front half appeared to clamber out first. It must be a trick of the light and the mist, but he was sure that’s what was happening. And then the back half did the same and… two red deer stags stood on the bank, shaking the water out of their coats, before trotting off into the wood below the house.
Robert’s heart was pumping at a clinically unhealthy rate and he felt as though his whole body was full of adrenalin. He stood there shaking, up to his chest in water, but before h

Steve was on Alphonse in the Indian Ocean. He decided to ask his boatman whether they could venture out beyond the reef into slightly deeper water. He had been down to the fish market early the previous morning and seen some of the boxes being landed. There were species there that never came onto the flats where he had been stalking bone fish, and he felt an urge to try to catch some of them. In particular, the giant trevally looked a perfect target. He had heard people talk about how hard they fought and he fancied having a crack at them. He might not get anoth

Because he was looking round when the ice struck, Steve took much of the force of the impact on the right side of his body, especially in the ribs and a smash in the face. The ice knocked him off his feet and picked him up on its leading edge, so that he was carried down the river as though he were a stranded seal or polar bear. Try as he might, he couldn’t fight against the pressure forcing him downstream and anyway, even if he had been able to slide off the ice, its bulk would almost certainly have run him over and crushed him against the riverbed. ‘Salmon!’ shouted Geordie. ‘You don’t see many of those in here.’
Then it swirled again and we saw it more clearly this time. ‘Looks a bit coloured,’ I said.
‘Positively brown,’ agreed Peter.
‘And furry,’ Geordie added. ‘That’s a flaming otter!’
And so we watched the otter fishing for a few more moments until it finally caught a brown trout, considerably bigger than anything we had ORKNEY OLIVES AND SEA TROUT

poking out from a rock, and it was a quick dash into the house to pick up his bamboo cane and return to tempt it from its lair with a worm or piece of meat. We tend to forget in today’s world of commercialism and modern fishing tackle that, back in the 1930s and 1940s, times were hard and Bill recalls a Mr Rowe, who owned a shop in Barnstaple High Street, selling bamboo canes with eyes crudely whipped on for sixpence.
Bill’s passion for the river inevitably rubbed off on John and, when he was old enough, they would fish together for salmon, sea trout and trou

‘Are you not staying with me a little?’
‘I’m paid to go salmon fishing, Mister Schmidt, sir; that’s my job. So I will see you at lunchtime.’
With that, he pushed the boat off the beach, jumped in and headed for his first drift of the day, praying that he would catch a salmon.
The morning wore on and not a sniff of either salmon or sea trout on the toby. Just before lunch, he tried a drift down towards the island, casting his favourite Olive Bumble on the bob and a Connemara black on the tail, but all he managed was a swirl from a small brownie, and even

Tom grinned sheepishly. ‘Oh, I wouldn’t think I’ll have time. But since you mentioned it, I’ll take a small rod, just in case.’
‘Yes, I just bet you will!’
So a short spinning rod, fixed-spool reel, wire traces and large spoons with single hooks were included on the equipment list.
They met their guide, Thomas, at Chirundu. ‘What is a hippo?’ he asked rhetorically, as he started his ritual safety talk about the river and its wildlife. ‘A hippo is 3000 kilos or 6500 pounds of pure muscle, all controlled by a brain the size of a ping-pong ball! It sees a

Alas, the hook didn’t hold for long and just pulled free, almost certainly, the ghillie told him later, because it was a tired fish that only took the big tube fly half-heartedly in the first place. That was often the way with running spring fish that had to battle their way through rough water between pools. They would take the fly if it crossed in front of their noses, but you had to be lucky to keep them on for long.
Slightly chastened by the experience, Ben walked downstream to find Richard sitting forlornly on a rock beside one of the lower pools.
‘I’

‘Mahseer!’ whispered Bola in a hushed, reverential tone, proving that he was every bit as awestruck by the sight as Steve himself was. ‘Now, that is a great, great fish!’
The mahseer seemed perfectly happy to be handled now, as first Bola and then Saban supported its enormous frame while they secured the recovery cord through its gills and took photographs from all angles. The fish remained calm through all this, as though it knew it was playing its part in something much more intense than merely an angling feat, and that it wouldn’t be harmed in any way.

Ever so slowly, Colin managed to regain line and keep it on the spool. The tarpon began to wallow on the surface now rather than jump, its tail thrashing water but not propelling it any more. Colin put more effort into pumping the rod, although whether he was pulling the fish to the boat or the boat to the fish, he wasn’t sure. Whichever, the tarpon finally lay alongside, which enabled Peter and Steve to grapple hold of the fish and haul it onto the flat deck in the bows of the dory. Even so, with its body right across the boat’s beam, its tail still reached int

The fight had lasted almost exactly an hour and the recovery period took another 30 minutes. Steve was cradling the fish, up to his chest in water, as the cord was removed. The mahseer rolled over, its eyes momentarily staring into Steve’s one last time, before it slowly sank away into the reflected moonlight and disappeared.
AMAZING FISHING STORIES
Back at the campsite, the post mortem took place. Saban and Bola had measured the fish at 6 feet, 7 inches, nose to fork of tail, with a girth of 48 inches.
‘Okay,’ said Steve, ‘we know its dimensions, now w

Despite the humorous backchat from the rest of the party, all of whom were used to seeing red squirrels because they lived in Scotland or northern England, watching one that day was an event for me. I AMAZING FISHING STORIES
grew up with red squirrels as a boy, taking them totally for granted and laughing at my father forever chasing them out of the fruit trees in our garden. Before my Spey sighting, however, I hadn’t seen one in the flesh for 30 years, which just goes to prove how a species can move from abundance to rarity in the blink of an evolutionary ey

Jose was now in his element. ‘Hey, John, there were two more permit back there just now. Get your arse in gear, man, and let’s have another.’
The fish were still feeding and John, with several permit under his belt in the past few years, was quickly into one on a shrimp fly. The fight lasted 20 minutes, going much the same way as Robin’s, except that Jose’s part in proceedings was a bit more impressive this time. Having failed a couple of times to tail the circling fish, he threw dignity to the winds and dived full length on the fish, completely disappearing

However, the opportunity to go fishing beyond the reef finally won the struggle, and Peter and James joined a boat heading out of Malindi with a skipper and three crewmen. The other guests were a married couple, although the side effects of malaria tablets kept the wife lying in the wheelhouse, quietly moaning, for the entire trip, so there were only three anglers to share whatever spoils the Indian Ocean had to offer.
Just beyond the reef, they had great fun for half an hour catching small bonito. Knowing that James was an ardent conservationist who was agai

‘Fish the pool down hard for about 50 yards,’ my host had told me. ‘There’s a bit right at the bottom that sometimes holds a fish, but it’s only worth a couple of casts.’
I fished the main pool and didn’t get a sniff. Again I went into the unproductive water, and immediately had a savage take on the Cascade, the fish racing off towards the foot bridge at Aberlour. Unfortunately, that was the last I saw of it, because we parted company just after the backing appeared through the top ring, so my hopes of a hat-trick in the day from unpromising lies were dashed.

He met all kinds on the riverbank, but this one was beginning to take the biscuit. He could quite cheerfully lure him into a deep hole and let him drown; he had a fleeting image of the major’s head sinking into the peaty water, that pompous little moustache twitching wildly in panic as he disappeared.
