‘It’s a fish!’ cried Steve, ‘and not the one I hooked first time round. Would a big trevally take a smaller fish?’
The boatman looked doubtful and apprehensive at the same time. ‘Not unless it’s the biggest one I’ve ever seen. That’s some fish you’re playing there.’
Steve let it run for a while, occasionally winning line back and losing it again just as quickly. The tackle wasn’t really up to the job, but he was patient, and slowly he began to gain control. Even so, it was probably an hour or more before they saw the first glimpse of the fish appearing bel

‘So,’ said Helen, ‘was it feeling pain and just snapping at the beetles out of anger, or was it genuinely feeding?’
George shook his head. ‘I was watching it just beforehand. That fish was quietly sitting there, tethered for sure, but it wasn’t worried, otherwise it would have been fighting against the tension in the line. I’m convinced it came up and took those bugs as food.’
Brett laughed out loud. ‘We’ll never know for sure, but I’m inclined to agree with you, George. One thing’s for certain, though: that’s the biggest brown trout you’ll see this week,

immediately, the first lure was hit by a small express train and he struck into something that dived deep and doggedly stayed there.
Mark looked behind him, expecting to see a line of excited Japanese vying to be the first one to land a fish. However, all those on deck had their eyes closed and no one seemed in a hurry to leave the wheelhouse.
‘Bring it in yourself,’ Don called out.
Mark leant into the fish and tried to power it to the surface, but it wasn’t quite that easy. Each time he had it close to the top it bored away again, and it was a good six

‘Better be careful, then. These steelheads fight like hell, yer know!’
On the second day Peter hooked and lost four big fish, and then finally landed a magnificent fresh 27-inch steelhead, silver flanked with iridescentpinkflashes.Aseveningapproachedhehookedabigsteelhead in front of Canoe Rock, which fought him for ages, continually leaping and showing off its freshness in the dwindling light. However, with a steep bank behind, it proved difficult to land and the fish managed to free itself at the last moment. It would prove to be the biggest steelhead of the

Just beyond the reef, they had great fun for half an hour catching small bonito. Knowing that James was an ardent conservationist who was against unnecessary killing, Peter was relieved to see all the fish going alive into a tank, although he wasn’t quite sure why. The boat then headed further out to sea and, with an increasing swell making the going bumpy, they soon spied a flock of skuas, terns and gulls diving into some turbulent water up ahead.
‘Baitfish!’ stated the skipper. ‘There are predators underneath pushing them up on the surface. Just what we wan

visited Zimbabwe in 1990, mainly to photograph the wildlife, so I only had a telescopic spinning rod with me to cover all fishing eventualities. As to lures, Trevor Housby, the well-known angling writer now sadly no longer with us, had been to Zimbabwe the year before and told me whatever else I did to take loads of mepps spinners, but to replace the treble hooks with singles.
‘You’ll never hook a tiger on a treble,’ he told me. ‘Too many teeth! And take more tackle than you’ll need. You can’t buy anything half decent over there and when you leave, you can gi

Jose was now in his element. ‘Hey, John, there were two more permit back there just now. Get your arse in gear, man, and let’s have another.’
The fish were still feeding and John, with several permit under his belt in the past few years, was quickly into one on a shrimp fly. The fight lasted 20 minutes, going much the same way as Robin’s, except that Jose’s part in proceedings was a bit more impressive this time. Having failed a couple of times to tail the circling fish, he threw dignity to the winds and dived full length on the fish, completely disappearing

‘Visit the Motor Museum and the abbey,’ suggested Chris.
They spent the morning inspecting cars, then went into the abbey and house in the afternoon. There was a guide in the house talking about the ghosts that were seen around the estate, even sometimes on the river. The Beaulieu was an important trading highway in the old days and the monks would use it to transport some of their agricultural produce, and to bring in wines and spices from the continent. They were still seen on the riverbank apparently, carrying barrels over their shoulder or sacks of corn,

On this occasion, on the island of Los Roques off the Venezuelan coast, Robin was getting the distinct impression that his guide, Jose, was anything but impressed with his client’s performance. In his defence, Robin reckoned this had as much to do with the intake of vintage rum the night before as his lack of prowess at permit fishing. He had caught plenty of bonefish before, so he knew what he was supposed to be doing out there on the flats. However, he was presently experiencing a rare lack of fishing confidence, with Jose standing close beside him like an exa

And so, whether the torch carriers were ancient builders of the stones, pagan Norsemen, druids or early Christian monks, no one can say. But what they will tell you on South Uist is that, as good as the sea trout fishing may be on Bharp as the sun goes down, don’t be stupid enough to be there!
KING HENRY’S HORSEMEN
Ghost stories told during daylight may seem trite, but they can take on a much more frightening realism once darkness falls over an ancient wooded riverbank.

‘Right,’ said Gendall over a beer in the lodge, ‘that’s the introduction bit over. Tomorrow we’ll go after some proper fish, but you’ve got to forget your chalkstream fishing from home; I’ve done that and it’s kid’s stuff compared to this. Here you have to spot your fish and think completely natural. These are truly wild trout and they don’t get to their size by being stupid: they’re far cuter than anything you’ll find back in the UK. So keep low, eyes open and dead accurate casting in the morning, okay?’
Gendall chose a stretch of river relevant to the wind

‘I know how to fish, Murdo. No need to fuss, man.’
Infuriatingly, the major was as good as his word. Murdo hated to admit it, but the bloody man could fish. He cast lightly and waded sensitively, so that he didn’t disturb the fish he covered. Murdo wished every guest he looked after was as knowledgeable about the ways of salmon as this man, even though he had a polluted character to go with it. And it paid off, too. On only his fourth cast, before he had hardly had time to settle into a rhythm, the rod tip dipped and he was into a beautiful silver 6-pound gri

His friends had been at the whisky by the time he staggered into the bar, and there were a few other visiting anglers and some of the locals with them. Despite the malty haze in his head, one of the party, who later related this story, said that one look at Peter was enough to realise that something dreadful had happened. He was white as a ghost and his hands were trembling uncontrollably. The fact that he hadn’t taken off his waders before entering the bar and that the top of his shirt was soaking wet suggested he was in a high state of distress.

He came out of the river, still regaining line, and walked up towards the bush, now fairly certain of what must have happened.
Andthere, sureenough, lyingdownunderthegorsebushandtucking into the lovely silvery grilse, was a large dog otter. Michael stopped when he saw the animal, hoping not to disturb it, but the otter had obviously seen him from a way off and had managed to rip the tail end from the rest of the fish. It stayed for a second, a pound and a half of salmon in its jaws, staring at Michael as if to admonish him for disturbing his meal after all that

‘Oh, you poor dear!’ said an old woman. ‘You look as though you’re perished. Come in by the fire.’
Charles nodded and smiled his thanks at her, then lurched across and sank to his knees in front of the open grate.
‘You’ll be wanting some tea,’ she said, ‘and I have some stew on the hob. Here, now, take those clothes off and I’ve a blanket you can wear until they’re dry.’
‘You’re … too kind,’ he stammered, his teeth chattering uncontrollably.
‘Nonsense! I often help the fishermen off the lough. Old Maire never turned one of you away when you needed

CAPTURE… ESCAPE… RECAPTURE…
If the strength of tackle doesn’t match the size of fish being played, you need patience andguileto have any chance of landing it. Michael Smith and his team showed both in spades, during surely one of the most remarkable fights with any freshwater fish.
ew anglers are better qualified to handle a large salmon than Michael Smith. He had already caught a fish of more than
43 pounds, on the Dalguise beat on Scotland’s River Tay, so he not o

‘Absolutely no way! We just don’t go on that island. Look, we might as well call it a day now and get you back to the hotel for dinner. We can have an early start in the morning to make up for it.’
John raised his eyebrows at Veronica. ‘Oh alright, David, if you say so.’ The fishing didn’t look as though it would pick up before dusk anyway, so they weren’t missing much. However, he was fascinated to know more about this obsession David seemed to have with Isle Maree.
Back at the hotel, they sat David down in the Ghillies’ Bar with a glass of beer and were

Tom, still on his hands and knees, looked up to see Thomas with his .303 rifle held at his hip and pointed skywards. There, looming above them and not more than 5 yards away, was a massive bull elephant, rubbing its hindquarters on a tree stump and staring down at what must to him have been two diminutive humans just waiting to be squashed underfoot. His enormous tusks only just cleared the ground and he was quite the most magnificent, and frightening, sight Tom had ever had up close in the natural world. How on earth the elephan

‘This is very enlightening for me,’ said Gagan reverently. ‘You see, I now understand that the mahseer must know when a true cremation is taking place. They appreciate that they are part of the ceremony; it is not just food for them, otherwise they would have come for the sheep. This proves to me that the mahseer is, indeed, a deeply spiritual fish.’
Mark ended the week with 14 golden mahseer to his rod, the biggest of which went more than 40 pounds, and all the fish were returned alive and unharmed to the sacred river. He always handled his fish with respect

oak planks along the hull. The flying gaff lived up to its name and flew straight back at Ray, hitting him hard on the shoulder before bouncing dangerously around on the deck.
The shark took off and came right out of the water again in another tail-walk. There was a loud metallic noise from Rick’s reel, and then the line broke with a resounding crack. The shark disappeared.
The flying gaff, that menacing piece of forged steel, had been bent out almost dead straight, as though someone had merely unpicked a paper clip. Ray was clutching his shoulder and the

Robin frowned. ‘I thought you said babies, Jose?’
‘It is a baby, man, it’s only about 30 pounds!’
Robin nodded. ‘Okay. Er… John, why don’t you take the tarpon? I haven’t a hope of getting a fly under those trees.’ ‘Like I have?’ John snorted.
Jose grabbed the end of his leader. ‘Leave it to me, man. Just jump in and keep close.’
Jose and John went in up to their waists, but the bottom wasn’t the same as the hard sand closer to shore. Here it was soft, muddy goo, which made movement slow and ponderous. In fact, Robin had the impression of watching t

At this point, the fish turned back downstream and then, for the first time, it came out of the water, showing them its true size at last. Its tail slapped back with an almighty splash and there was silence for a second or two.
‘Christ, Bill,’ Michael muttered at last. ‘I knew he was big, but that’s just bloody ridiculous!’
The fight went on and on, but just when Michael sensed the fish might be tiring, the river suddenly began to rise; the hydro plant had sent down an extra foot of water, so the increased flow turned the advantage completely back to the s

‘And that’s half a tarpon on the stern,’ said Peter, looking through his binoculars.
It transpired that the boat had landed an estimated 80-pound tarpon and, while the captain was trying to release it, a 12-foot lemon shark had come from nowhere and slashed it in half. Even though the crew were fighting it off with the boat hooks, the shark seemed determined to grab the rest of the fish, although it finally gave up and swam away, leaving about 40 pounds of front-end tarpon on the boat, jagged teeth marks where the tail end had been ripped away.

They also saw the salmon appear out of the pot, almost in slow motion as it followed the fly, seemingly transfixed by this alien being in its solitary lair. Just as the fly slowed out of the current, the fish took it and, with a flick of its head, rolled away to return to its lie.
Robin tightened into the salmon, and then let out the most unholy yell of delight. ‘Told you!’
‘I do not flaming believe it!’ roared John. ‘Tell me this isn’t happening, for God’s sake!’
‘I’m afraid it is. Come on, let’s go and help the jammy sod!’
‘We’ll never hear the end

Victor’s heart was threatening to smash through his shirt by now, and he had an unbelievable adrenalin rush through his belly with the shock of that initial run. He knew this was something out of the ordinary, because he had never seen a trout behave like this on Lake Vyrnwy; it was a hugely different feeling.
A ridiculously long time seemed to pass before the fish slowed down, but it finally stopped and enabled Victor frantically to wind the little brass reel to retrieve some line. The trout came in quite easily to start with and Victor thought he had it bea

‘Ja, my boat partner, he is not well and stays in his bed, so we go fishing.’
‘Hand me your tackle, Sir. It looks like you’ve enough there to open your own shop!
The kit was stowed in the bottom of the boat. Patrick thought it slightly peculiar that Herr Schmidt had brought a large tackle box with him and quite so many rods, and even more so that none of them was made up. Anglers normally came out ready to start fishing immediately, but not Herr Schmidt on this occasion. He didn’t even start to tackle up as the fishing boat was cast off. Patrick opened up

‘Can you grab its tail?’ Steve asked, deciding that was the best place for the boatman, it being furthest away from the teeth end. ‘No way I’m touching any part of that fish!’
ANCHORS AND LEMONADE
‘You’ve got to help somehow. I can’t handle a 6-foot shark on my own!’
The boatman merely shook his head and tried to move even further away.
Steve’s brain went into overdrive. ‘Okay. Look, you take the rod and leave the rest to me.’
The boatman didn’t look too happy about this plan either, but it must have seemed the least dangerous option for him, so h
