This was the scene when Dr Brett Wolf, a fly-fishing aficionado who used to run Blue Lake Lodge, took George and Helen Westropp on their first trip on Arthur’s Lake. The wind was blowing steadily from the south and creating wide wind lanes close to shore, right above the desiccated tree trunks; it was immediately obvious that the trout were feeding in them on the terrestrial bugs.
‘What flies, Brett?’ asked George.
‘Anything you like … just so long as it’s the Para Dun!’ ‘Don’t you use anything else?’ asked Helen. ‘Never had to yet.’

Having spent a fortnight in the bush advising on management options for some wetland areas, he was now in Cairns, generally considered to be the marlin capital of the world. He went down to the harbour as the sport fishing boats came home, waited for the clients to disembark and hailed one of the skippers.
‘Any chance of a trip in the next couple of days?’
‘No, mate, fully booked. So’s everyone else a

likely-looking pot between those two rocks.’
‘What? No one fishes down there. It isn’t even a pool. Anything running the river goes straight through this water and doesn’t stop until it gets to the beat above us.’
‘Right, so you haven’t fished down there today?’ ‘We haven’t fished there ever,’ said John patiently.
‘Okay, but just have one go. You won’t know if you don’t try.’
‘Look, you do it,’ said Mike. ‘We can’t be arsed.’
‘All right, you stay here and be moribund. I’ll climb down and do it. Someone’s got to show willing.’

BANANAS, COCA-COLA AND TARPON
Fizzy drinks and fruit seem a strange recipe for catching one of the world’s hardest fighting, most acrobatic fish – but they worked their magic for one fortunate fisherman.
y the time Colin reached his 50th birthday, he was a wellrespected member of Wiltshire’s Salisbury fishing society in the
UK. Working in a tackle dealer’s shop in the city centre, and a well-known angler around Wiltshire and Hampshire coarse and trout fisheries, he reached his half-century as a highly popular, jovial soul who knew as much as most about

to catch a King in the sea, where heavier tackle and fish baits are the norm. She was into her 80s when she finally made the trip.
Barbara flew to Anchorage, the hub of Alaskan salmon fishing safaris, and from there she took a sea plane further up the coast. On her first morning she found herself in a large bay sitting in a good-sized, comfortable boat, two rods fishing heavy outriggers down deep and using flashing lures to attract the fish in close, and then herring as bait for the main hooks.
Her rod suddenly buckled over and she reached out to grab it,

The most recent encounter with a really big salmon was in October 2001. Captain Tim Ritson and party were fishing the lower river, three weeks after a 38-pound fish had been caught. Captain Ritson and retired Helmsdale ghillie Donald MacKay fished the Well pool and lost a salmon of around 25 pounds at the net. Soon afterwards another fish took gently and went into a sulk, first on their side of the river, then moving to the far side and refusing to move an inch.

From Donald’s experience, he was convinced that the fish was over

Robin frowned. ‘What?’
‘This isn’t a recognised pool. We need to name it.’ ‘How about Robin’s Pot?’ Robin suggested modestly.
‘I’ve got a better idea,’ said John.
John took out his hip flask and poured a few drops of whisky into the water. ‘I name this place the CBA Pot.’ Robin’s frown deepened. ‘CBA?’ ‘Can’t Be Arsed,’ said John.
The name has stuck. And when the water is low on the Coquet, the threesome wouldn’t dream of fishing without a few casts in the CBA Pot; even though, to their knowledge, it hasn’t produced another fish from that day to this

The fight went on and on, but just when Michael sensed the fish might be tiring, the river suddenly began to rise; the hydro plant had sent down an extra foot of water, so the increased flow turned the advantage completely back to the salmon. It was also harder to row the boat upstream, so Michael took the oars for a spell and gave the rod to Bill.
It was now that the fish, perhaps spurred on by the increased water, changed its pattern and, instead of keeping to the deeper channel and the far side of the pool, headed quickly for a stone croy, stripping line o

However, rather than dive away to safety, it proceeded to swim slowly round the boat, eyeing up the two men while it continued to shake its head and rid itself of the final pieces of plastic. Then, with a great slash of its tail, it dived away out of sight and was gone.
The boatman was grinning inanely, out of sheer relief rather than with humour, Steve suspected. The man reached out his hand.
‘Very good, sir. Bloody glad it wasn’t great white, though.’

Someone mumbled something about a fish that size on a cluttered boat like Freebooter being an extremely bad idea. Meanwhile, Rick was trying desperately to keep some control over the situation.
AMAZING FISHING STORIES
Ray came up beside him. ‘Let him run as much as he wants. The only chance you’ve got is to let him knacker himself out completely. You won’t beat him any other way with the gear you’re using.’
No one actually timed the fight, but the general feeling afterwards was that it went on for more than an hour and a half. The shark made countless l

‘Visit the Motor Museum and the abbey,’ suggested Chris.
They spent the morning inspecting cars, then went into the abbey and house in the afternoon. There was a guide in the house talking about the ghosts that were seen around the estate, even sometimes on the river. The Beaulieu was an important trading highway in the old days and the monks would use it to transport some of their agricultural produce, and to bring in wines and spices from the continent. They were still seen on the riverbank apparently, carrying barrels over their shoulder or sacks of corn,

The line stopped and Greg braced himself.
Richard put a hand on his arm. ‘Just a bit longer. Remember what that article said: he’s turning the fish round in his mouth so he can swallow it head first.’
Greg nodded again. His hand was shaking and his face grimaced with tension. ‘Now, you reckon?’
Greg leant back and put everything into the strike. The rod bent in a great arc and then line shot off the reel as the fish headed out towards the middle.
‘Ratchet!’ cried Richard.
Greg flipped the brass knob on the side of the reel to engage the ratchet, w

Ocean exploded in popularity during the last couple of decades of the twentieth century. Great fun though saltwater fly-fishing is, exponents still occasionally like to take time out and revert to the old methods of bait or surface lure fishing with poppers for bigger specimens, such as barracuda, billfish or one of the all-time favourite quarries, giant trevally. Trevally, pound for pound, have a reputation for being one of the hardest fighting fish in the sea.

Hughie, and a friend, Simon, were on the river early one morning, having seen a weather forecast the previous evening that promised rain by midday. The river was already at a good height for fly fishing, but it wouldn’t need much of a deluge to make it unfishable, which would be a pity, because there were plenty of fresh salmon about.
It was September and some stale sea trout were being a nuisance. Both men had caught and returned a couple of fish in the lower pools, AMAZING FISHING STORIES

‘They’re all asleep,’ Don shouted. ‘Just keep ’em coming and enjoy yourself!’
The sport became frenetic. That second fish was a wahoo, and it was followed by jacks, two yellow-fin tuna, a mahimahi, more king mackerel and a decent-sized giant trevally. A tuna slapped around the deck and made enough noise to rouse one of the fishing party out of his stupor, and he was galvanised into enough action to take the rod and play a lively Queenfish, which meant that Don could stay on the wheel while Mark played crew and boated the fish. However, although the Japanese s

HistorydoesnotrelatewhichloughCharlesCuthbertsonwasfishing. We do know that it was his first trip to Ireland, and that he was so enthusiastic about his trout fishing that he was prepared to ignore the pessimistic weather prognosis from the boatman he had hired for the week. After two successful days’ fishing, the boatman refused to take AMAZING FISHING STORIES
Charles out on the Wednesday, saying that an Atlantic storm was on its way and would turn the lough into a maelstrom by the afternoon.
Charles did not want to lose even a few hours’ precious fishing,

business to be, and that he was being told by some unknown authority to leave immediately.
Peter turned and fought his way through the water for the shore, tripping over boulders and slipping on gravel in his panic to get away from the place. Several times he fell to his knees, soaking the upper part of his body and bruising his legs, but the pain made no impression, such was his manic determination to get away from the loch. He scrambled up the bank, dived into his car and drove at a ludicrous speed all the way back to the hotel.

The salmon kept fighting, harder than Atlantic salmon in a Highland River, Barbara reckoned. It took out line on long runs, then dived deeply several times and, once she thought she had it under control near the boat, it decided to tear off under the hull so that she

This was before Stephen Spielberg made Jaws, so great whites didn’t have the global reputation that they do today. Even so, Rick’s interest was aroused and he was determined to catch something more interesting than the blue sharks he had hooked ma

s Ernest Hemingway’s Old Man found out the hard way, playing a big fish is only half the story. Having battled your quarry to the surface, you have to land it, despatch it and then decide what to do with it afterwards, all of which can sometimes prove spectacularly difficult.
