Steelhead, the migratory form of rainbow trout, is one of the great game species and a must-catch for any globe-travelling fly fisher. The fact that bears inhabit similar country to steelhead, and enjoy eating them, adds an interesting dimension to Alaskan fishing trips.

I fished the main pool and didn’t get a sniff. Again I went into the unproductive water, and immediately had a savage take on the Cascade, the fish racing off towards the foot bridge at Aberlour. Unfortunately, that was the last I saw of it, because we parted company just after the backing appeared through the top ring, so my hopes of a hat-trick in the day from unpromising lies were dashed.

George grunted, sorted out his line and cast again, this time just long enough for him to work the muddler through the surface. His concentration was fixed firmly on the wake of the fly across the water, when a mouth suddenly appeared and slashed violently at it. There was a tug, but then nothing.
‘Damn, that was a fish!’ he cried out in stunned surprise.
